You might as well ban any motorsports, motor vehicles, air transport, bicycles and even walking as all of them are a lot more dangerous to the population than airshows

This is a terrible tragedy and my condolences go to all those involved.

However, if we set about banning stuff which isn't essential, there's an awful lot of far more dangerous pursuits we could start with.

How many airshows actually happen in the UK?

I don't really think there is a high percentage of accidents.

RIP all those poor folk, but also if it had hit the other side of the road the death toll would have been far higher.

I work for a company that repairs & overhauls components for various aircraft Sally 'B' & XH558 to name a few

Some of these aircraft are vital for people like me, I control the Technical Library with some 4,000 manuals.

These aircraft all all regulated and every last piece can be traced back to the date of manufacturer.

If you go down the 'Ban' route you might as well ground several major aircraft types.

A real tragedy for a well run and popular air show. RIP those concerned.

Closing the A27 will gridlock the entire area as apart from the single carriageway Norfolk bridge to the south (A259) this is the only river crossing on the Adur for miles.

BTW the telephoto long distance coverage of the crash site is from Mill Hill. A superb vantage point to watch the show.

I have held my hand luggage on my lap during take off as I want to access as soon as I'm allowed.

I thought it might be a fan blade failure, they have kevlar lining in the of the cowl so any debit would be pulled into the engine causing the fire.

They where bloody luck as it would have had a fair bit of fuel on board

It's doubtful that ISIS in that region have anything capable of taking out a plane at that altitude so I'm thinking a bomb on board is looking likely.

I'm wondering whether there were any journalists or other people that might have displeased the current Russian regime on board. :erm:

One of the reports came out today about the Air Asia 2014 crash I wonder who did the soldering??

Quote:

The soldering on a system that controlled the rudder was found to be cracked, causing it to send four warning signals to the pilots.

The crew tried to fix the problem by resetting the computer but this disabled the autopilot. They then lost control of the plane.

"As you can see in the video above, about 18 seconds after we began rolling down JFK’s runway 22R, the aircraft self-aborted, bringing us from more than 100 mph to a loud, screeching halt in roughly 15 seconds," he wrote.
"For a plane of this size and weight, stopping that quickly required a lot of force. To give you another idea of how abruptly we stopped, as you can see in the picture below, nearly all of the 200+ pillows and blankets landed on the floor, having previously been neatly arranged on each seat in economy.

There's an Open Skies inspection flight being conducted tomorrow by a Russian Air Force Antonov AN30.

Route will be from Chester heading north up the coast to Whitehaven then turn east to Scarborough via Harrogate (wonder why ;))

It will then route South West back over the Pennines to Crewe and head back to Brize Norton. These flights are usually at about 4-5,000ft so it should be possible to get a decent blimp at it if you're anywhere along the way.

A fully-booked passenger plane came within yards of plunging into the Black Sea when it skidded off an icy runway while trying to land.

The jet's 162 passengers had a lucky escape when the wheels of their Pegasus Airlines flight dug into the freezing mud at Trabzon Airport - leaving it dangling precariously off a coastal cliff.

Turkish officials said the cause of the accident was not yet known, and closed the airport overnight to conduct an investigation.

Dramatic photos appear to show smoke billowing from the cabin - but Trabzon Governer Yucel Yavuz said all 162 passengers and crew on board were evacuated safely.

Mar 12, 2018-A US-Bangla airlines aircraft carrying 71 people including four crew members crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu on Monday afternoon. The TIA authority has suspected casualty but the details are sketchy.

Tourism Ministry Joint Secretary Suresh Acharya said 25 injured passengers have been rescued and sent to different hospitals for treatment. TIA said there were 37 males, 27 females and two child onboard the aircraft.

Director General of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (Caan) Sanjiv Gautam said that the plane was out of control when it attempted to land on the runway. “The aircraft was permitted to land from the Southern side of the runway over Koteshwor but it landed from the Northern side,” said Gautam suspecting the aircraft might have sustained some technical glitches. “We are yet to ascertain the reason behind the unusual landing,” he added.

Some of you probably know this already but the Farnborough International Airshow Public days are no more.
It's not surprising really seeing how terrible 2018's display was.

With the Shoreham crash a few years back and the additional new housing built nearby they've played it safe and now pulling the plug.

It will continue as a trade only show with apparently one public day on the friday but it won't be the same.

I'm hoping Paris keeps going and that they atleast have a better flying display for the public.

Totally agree with the hand luggage comment.

Utterly sick of morons with their sense of entitlement regarding carry on luggage.

Been seen so many times now where these idiots think their personal stuff is more important than someone's life.:td:

There is video out there (too big to post in here) that shows that the aircraft touched down, went back up a few feet then slammed down onto the runway with the tail hitting first. Only then did the fire start, presumably when fuel tanks were ruptured.

Re: Plane Spotters Corner

Planes are not designed to land with take off weight.

This plane landed above its max landing weight. The book allows this in emergency situations but then the plane would need a heavy landing check.

It looks like the plane bounced and the 2nd impact drove the MLG thought its mounting uptown the tank above which cause fuel to pour into the engine which caused the fire.

It's a miracle that anyone survived., and goes to show the next time you flight listen to the crews safely talk. It might save your live as people panic and treat the planes seat belt like a car and try and jab at a non existent button.

Respect to the crew staying until the last seconds and in one case to long to save their passengers.

Makes me wonder if there should be an automatic lock that could be applied by cabin crew that locks all overhead storage so no one could start getting their possessions out and they'd have to just get on with evacuation of the aircraft.
It could definitely save lives.

N341A - The only flying C-41A (military liaison variant of DC3) left in the world currently stopping at Keflavik en-route for Daks over Normandy next week.

Presumably night stopping so it should fly through UK airspace tomorrow.

We had this smoky old Soviet crate in again this evening. Had the camera handy this time. Unfortunately the sky was dull as ditchwater.

There were 2x AN12s in yesterday and there have been another two already this morning. They're chartered in by Wynne Aviation who have been working with Jaguar Land Rover to ship in parts. Last year there was also a carrier operating out of the Isle of Man with a leased AN-26.

We haven't had the Ruslan in at LJLA for a few years. It used to come in at Christmas to pick up charity boxes. I did pop over to see the Libyan one which came into Manchester a while ago to pick up some construction equipment for Darfur.

As far as I understand it there’s no such thing as “an original Silver Spitfire”, certainly not in the way the Evening Standard seems to understand it. So far as I can tell this was just a regular Mk.ix plane built during the war alongside a lot of others and presumably painted up the same as them. It’s just that the restorers have chosen to restore and style it in this way.

Or have I got it totally wrong? Was “The Silver Spitfire” a thing in 1943?

Pretty much spot on. It was a normal mk ix originally with 118sqn painted up with the same livery as any other aircraft in the unit.

This aircraft is one of the best airworthy examples in terms of original spec which is where the writer of the piece seems to have misinterpreted their research.

I have to say that along with the sounds of lawnmowers and strimmers around here is the sound of the Spitfire from the local Solent Airfield on it's daily runs around Lee-on-Solent and the Isle of Wight for paying passengers. I wish I had a spare £1500 to take a trip.

Unusual site yesterday morning in west Kent... at high altitude there were 5 fighters escorting a much larger aircraft (V formation) ... flying south-south east.

You probably saw the 366th Fighter Wing F-15s which departed Lakenheath yesterday morning (although there were supposed to have been 6 leaving). Larger aircraft was probably a KC-135 tanker.

There have been quite a few Ryanair and Easyjet positioning flights over the past few days. Possibly a sign that they are preparing to begin operations again soon.

We still have Loganair flights in from the Isle of Man every day and the Wideroe flight from Bergen which I guess has been ferrying oil and gas industry workers.

Lots of RAF and AAC training activity as well taking advantage of clear skies.
