I have convinced the person in charge of our telecomms budgets that it was cost effective (now that the 02 iPhones can be legally unlocked) to upgrade our four trial 3G iPhones to four iPhone 16GB 3Gs, at a one off cost of £57 per phone, which means I should be upgrading my iPhone soon.

I did feel slightly silly talking to myself, though....:D

Anyone else downloaded the new Sky Mobile TV app? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8352178.stm

£6 a month for all Sky Sports channels, if you text Sky to 2020 you get 3 months free. The quality seems pretty good, i'll have to wait and see what watching a football match is like before i decide to start paying for it or cancel it.

Yeah it's pretty decent.

I like the 30sec rewind and pause live tv functions. I really like the fact that it includes espn. I reckon I may just cancel sky sports on the telly and use this with a tv out dock.

Yeah, it is really good. What would the quality be like if it's connected to a tv?

Hope their contract is cheaper, which forces Orange to be cheaper, and away I go. I shall wait until the next iPhone comes out before I upgrade though.

Can anyone confirm that when my existing O2 contract expires, I can continue to use it on a month-by-month rolling contract until I renew? I actually have to confirm I wish to sign for another 18 / 24 months?

Tesco is partnership with 02 as seeing as Orange and 02 have basically the same price then I think we can already work out the price Tesco will use too.

This only leaves Vodapone who might lower the price but I can't see that happening either

The partnership with O2 is to use their network. I think O2 basically sell them network access and a fee for when it is used. Tesco can set their own prices and services. (As far as I am aware).

Could be something, could be nothing, but an "iPhone3,1" mysteriously popped up in the usage records of a Bay Area App Store developer. If you'll remember, the "iPhone2,1" turned out to be the 3GS.

Also noteworthy is the timing of the discovery: In October 2008, Apple starting testing the 3GS in and around the San Francisco area.

I am thinking of going to the darkside. (Only when I gt another job, and I know I said "I wouldn't buy this piece of carp")

Most of the guys I work with have one.
But I have a few questions

1. I'm with orange PAYG, and want to know can I convert my number to pay monthly.
2. What happens to my remaining balance.
3. how does the inlimited WiFi work?
4. Do you need to use iTunes to put stuff onto the phone?
5. How easy is it to connect to a laptop as a modem and use the internet on the laptop.
6. how are you charged for apps?
7. can you download apps via the phone
8. Are there anything I need to look out for.
9. I guess the 3GS is the best one to get.

Dunno..
Quote:

3. how does the inlimited WiFi work?
Well, with O2, the contract for WiFi provision is with both The Cloud and BTOpenzone. The first time you go to a web page on either of the networks, you are asked to register your phone number. Then, they act like normal WiFi networks.
Quote:

4. Do you need to use iTunes to put stuff onto the phone?
Officially yes. Unofficially, the ml_ipod plug in for winamp supports the iPhone. Be warned though, last time I tried this (a few months back, and there has been a new version since), I ended up having to reformat and transfer all my music and videos again. As the saying goes, Your Mileage May Vary..
Quote:

5. How easy is it to connect to a laptop as a modem and use the internet on the laptop.
As long as your tariff supports it (mine doesn't without an extra monthly payment which I am not paying), it should be easy..

Quote:

6. how are you charged for apps?
You need to register a bank card with the iTunes store. You also need an iTunes account.
Quote:

7. can you download apps via the phone
Yes. You can download Apps or Media from the iTunes store via 3G/Edge/GSM (if the download is less than 10 meg) or WiFi. To prevent accidental purchases or downloads, the phone will ask you to enter your iTunes password to download the item(s).
Quote:

8. Are there anything I need to look out for.
Apps wise? Well, we have a thread for that.. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/26...hone-apps.html
Quote:

9. I guess the 3GS is the best one to get.
Yes. It offers a compass and extra speed over the 3G. Apple do seem to be having some success persuading people to use those facilities. For instance, the Yelp app is a good local directory application on the 3G. It uses AGPS to display businesses and facilities in the local area. With the 3GS's compass, it becomes an "Augmented Reality" directory. Basically, you point the iPhone down the street, and it will highlight (on it's display) any facilities in that street. The 3GS also does video recording and trimming (it's not a full video editing package, you can't edit clips together or put special effects on them, but you can chop the start and/or end off).

One thing I like about the iPhone (I have a 3G) is that Apple have been very successful in encouraging programmers to write apps to use the iPhone's features. Featurewise, the iPhone 3G offers slightly less than my old phone, the N95. However, Nokia seem to be spectacularly bad at encouraging developers to use those features (I only found a handful of apps that used GPS and even fewer that used the accelerometer, both of which are used extensively on the iPhone).

Good luck.

Sorry, wasn't sure. The only concerns I have are that if you travel abroad a lot, it is easy to build up a large bill for data comms. Thankfully, you can put the iPhone in Roaming mode, which disables any "push" data facilities (like Push email) and stops the phone automatically checking other email accounts.

Another concern is that (like pretty much any smart phone) the iPhone can go through the battery at a rate of knots. Particularly if you play a lot of music/games/videos. Thankfully, the iPhone will charge from anything with a USB port (unlike my N95) and you can buy external battery packs if the power is a problem.

Also, the iPhone can only be managed by one computer. Not a concern if you only have one computer, but a pain if you have more than one. Thankfully, this is fairly easy to work around using the instructions at http://www.andrewgrant.org/2008/03/3...computers.html

My final concern isn't a real concern, but something to be wary of. The iPhone makes it easy to purchase things from the iTunes store (if it's too big to download on the phone, iTunes will download it next time you sign in on that). The problem comes because it is easy to hear a song (on the radio or elsewhere) and think "I haven't heard that in a while, think I'd like a copy of that" and before you know it, you've already bought it. And yes, this has happened to me. You just have to discipline yourself..

Thanks for that Stuart.

That was very helpful.

My only concern is that when I was with T-mobile I had a very good signal at home.

When I went to Orange (they only did the phone I wanted at the time on PAYG) the signal level is very poor at home.

I would love to keep my number but get a orange iPhone contract and get a carp signal.

I guess O2 would be better, and I could transfer my PAYG orange to pay monthly on O2 if the need arises.

Once again thaks Stuart.

I have just upgraded my 3G to a 3GS (on O2 Business Tariff, I get to keep the old one) - does anyone know if the 3G will accept a pay as you go sim, with the unlimited data and texts tariff (for the lad, and it's only £15 per month, and he infrequently calls, just texts)?

I have tried it with my personal pay as you go sim, and it works fine except no data.

It doesn't care what SIM you put in, so long as it's an O2 SIM (unless of course it's been unlocked, in which case it doesn't care at all).

The access point info is different for PAYG though, & needs to be changed:

However if you text it uses 4 standard (free) texts for one text abroad. So it might be cheaper :)

loving the app \ ipod side of the phone. Still getting to grips with the phone side.

One thing I can't work out how to do is how to clear down my missed calls list without removing the whole phone call history. As soon as I go into it I can either tap the name which calls them or hit the button at the end which brings up their contact details. If I hit clear it removes the entire call history including received calls

ah wondered about that. There are a few things on the phone side I wish were a little bit different.

When I look through my contacts and select one I want the icons at the botton to change to call \ txt \ edit \ delete. Instead they stay the same.

Apart from that a great phone

Apple have released a new iPhone model the last three summers running (original, 3G, 3GS), plus have also, IIRC, actually said that it has an annual product cycle, so I think it's a given that there'll be another one next June...

I wonder what else it will have other than a rumoured 5MP camera...

My contract is up in June/July...

Speaking of o2 iPhones - does anyone know how long it will be before my iPhone (3g pay as you go) will take before it's unlocked, they took the cash off the o2 sim yesterday but when I checked it was still locked last night. I've reset it back to 3.0.0 so it's factory fresh and left the o2 sim in it.

here's a quick one. Had a call yesterday while the phone was locked. I had the slide to answer option but I didn't want to answer the call I wanted to reject it and couldn't work out how to do that.

Tried iringer which is a good app but seems the only way to change the text message tone is to jail break the phone which I not sure I want to do at the moment

AFAIK, we don't use anything like that. Any changes server side would need to be made by Paul M, Mick or Frank (although it would be more likely to be Paul M)

Tried the button on the top of the phone?

not yet but assume that is the one. Tried the home button but that wouldn't do much. Shame it isn't like when the phone is unlocked where you can answer or reject or just do the slide to make those available.

Thanks for the info, knew you could do it just didn't know how

Not really an important thing, but I've just found a site that tells you how to add subtitles to a movie that you can turn on/off at will (ie not burned in).

It's quite a quick process as well. But, you do need a Mac (or at least OSX) and you do need to download the iPhone or Mac SDK (the iPhone SDK includes both), which is around a 2 or 3 gig download.

I cant tell any difference in speed of general usage between my old 2G, my Current 3G and my colleagues 3GS.... however, your mileage may vary :)

Hmmm thats far earlier than the June Developers Conference when they usually announce new models :)

I still don't think I'll upgrade my 3G one to an "iPhone 4" because of the lack of H/W keyboard. My digits are far too big to type on the iPhone's screen.

Dont let it bother you. Just think, I'll skip the iPhone 4 and wait for the iPhone 5.

I thought that as well, it turns out that my iPhone typing is near as makes no difference as quick as my normal keyboard typing - and that isn't slow ;)

I've not had the 3GS for all that long and it does everything I want and more - I definitely won't be upgrading yet, I'm going to wait for the one after the new one (by which time my contract will be up, this one will be abit more worn, and I'll be itching to move to the newest and bestest again :D ).

My contract has ended. I am getting verious pay-as-you-go sims to see which network is best and then switching to a £15 sim only contract. I might get the upgraded iPhone (when it comes out) but might buy the phone right out.

Cheers Thomas,

I'm using a Sony Ericsson A2DH headset (HBH DS2200) and I'd also like to know if a bluetooth hookup is possible using a samsung N10 netbook as one of my current providers is offering unlimited browsing if I take a new 3G phone.

If that's possible I can dump my 3GB per month dongle.

The headset should be fine. As for the use as a modem you'd need to ask the phone providor as I think some of them don't allow that with their iPhone contracts and some do.

I've not used the iPhone as a modem as I have a £5 a month virgin dongle deal so I can't comment on how good it is for that sorry.

Many thanks Thomas - a few useful pointers there.

I know with O2 you have to pay an extra £15/month on top of your contract to use the tethering (modem via laptop) features and then its not unlimited, its got a fair usage limit on it.

Is there an app, paid for or free that will allow me to block a number, for text, mms and calls ? It's an ongoing battle with Lloyds bank, they used to send me 3 texts a day with account balances, the only thing is, I don't bank with them, I've been into a branch, that was sorted out for all of a day, my old phone Samsung g600 had the feature, an old old phone, wtf doesn't the all singing 3GS have it.

Thanks.

The merry-go-round starts again:-

Quote:

According to the latest rumors, the iPhone is going to get an OLED screen, a dual core processor, and a removable battery. Video chat, better map capability, and better support for gamers are among other areas that you can expect iPhone 4G to address. We have been hearing about Apple adding an OLED screen to its phone for years now. That hasn’t happened so far. But Apple’s rivals may have forced Apple’s hands into taking action in that area. We do know that Apple is planning to offer a 5 MP camera on the new iPhones. So the phone will be better with video and photos.
My contract is up soon and quite tempted to get one now :)

There are several options for jailbroken iphones to improve bluetooth connectivity, for example I have installed A2DP onto an iphone 2g (and no it does not have the option normally)

My iPhone (3g) no longer opens up or shows the camera roll when I plug it into my windows 7 pc.

Does anyone have any (useful) ideas as to how to get this back before I do a restore?

You can multitask now on jailbroken iphones, I use proswitcher and backgrounder, works a treat.

So I've done a full restore now and it STILL doesn't show up in the 'computer' section so I can't get the pictures off it.

It still syncs just fine so windows is picking it up fine.
