You may well be stuffed, north of here has had it far worse than we have. But if you fancy coming to our part of the west Highlands instead, you could always drop in for a cuppa. ;)

took me longer to get to work today than Tuesday and the snow is clearing now.

Does anyone know if TFL \ South Eastern are offering a refund. It now seems that not only do I have a standing only, not at weekends and not late at night travelcard, it also doesn't work during the snow.

My friend from eastern Europe was why don't we just fit studded tyres every winter, sure we might not get this type of snow every year, but it would help for the cold mornings with ice and black ice and the times when we do get snow

Raistlin 05-02-2009 08:20

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Not sure yet.

Can't get to the local Tesco, that's a 5 mile drive - probably end up walking to the garage (about a mile and a half) or the nearest supermarket (a Rainbow) which is about 2 and a half miles away.

Can't drive, the local roads here are knackered - people have been leaving for work this morning in their cars and then coming back about 20 minutes later.....

We're virtually back to normal now. There's still some snow on grassy areas, but since it's raining lightly now I expect that will all go today. Side roads might be a bit slushy, but it's now safer to drive than walk given the ice still on some pavements. Seems like the northern rather than sourthern home counties got the snow last night.

Raistlin 05-02-2009 10:12

Re: [Merged] Snow!

Yep.

They're predicting more of the same across the bottom of the country, it's completely scuppered my plans for the week - normally that wouldn't be an issue, but it's putting some extremely critical work in jeapordy :(

Didn't have much hassle with the snow we had on Sun\Mon. Car was icebound on Tues so I couldn't get to work, Wed was ok clear roads, but today, well. Snowing when I got up and in 2 minds to try and get to work (17 miles each way) Thought I would give it a go but said to my wife that if it was still snowing at 9am I would leave work and go home.
1hr 15 to get to work, no gritters out from Mansfield or Nottingham councils. Still snowing at 9 so clocked out and 1hr 30 to get back home. Roads were terrible traffic was ok going out of Nottingham but the A614 was extremely dodgy. So I'm sat here waiting to see if I'll be going in tomorrow.

We have had about 3-4 inches this morning and more is expected.

At least 3 inches of snow a top farley hill, thwarting all traffic coming up to the estate - by order of the police just incase anyone was silly enough to contemplate it..

had fun and games this morning, hail at 4am, snow at 6am. hubby decided to try and get to work in mk. HA! slow crawl, got there eventually, worked for 1.5hrs to be told to go home early.

then my bosses couldn't get in - 7 inches of snow outside their house! so had to go open the other shop, where we had a surge for bread and milk as the co-op had none... good grief. while the manic panic buying was going on, people came in and said that it had been reported on BBC three counties that Luton town centre had been closed for the 2nd day running. They actually closed the arndale?! Bizarreness. What a palava.

I have suggested to my bosses that they get their own cows in their garden. ;)

Finally, a week after everyone else, we have some decent snow here. 2 inches or so, been snowing constantly since about 3.30pm and still going now, although it's slackened off a lot.

And it fell on top of cold, hard, icy ground and un-gritted roads (around here, but we never get grit here). The one bad thing about working from home, of course, is that I can't get snowed in ... :D

Re: [Merged] Snow!

We are officially snowed in; the police have closed the road several miles from here at the point where the gritter stops. Unbelievably there were still people driving up and down until well into the night last night. When our local school bus driver came up in a Land Rover to tell us there would be no school bus today, he said several of those cars are now lying abandoned where they slid off the road.

So, the boy is off school, but he's struggling with the fact that we're insisting he does some school work before he gets to play in the snow (we wouldn't be so strict except he's only just back from a two-week chicken pox break)!

Chris 09-02-2009 11:29

Re: [Merged] Snow!

There are a couple of spots that are shaded by trees - we are in the middle of a forest here. There isn't normally snow on the road at all, mainly for that reason. There's about two inches lying on untouched ground. It's well packed down on the road now because there's an unusually high proportion of Land Rover owners around here.

You can't really tell from the photo, but that's quite a steep slope heading down from our house, and just beyond the picture there's a sharp turn in front of a very steep gully. I wouldn't chance it personally. Several people did last night, and the local farmers are busy this morning removing cars from ditches at several trouble spots between here and where the gritted road begins.

The road is officially closed off by the police a few miles back towards civilisation from here.

Friday started fine but deteriorated slowly but seriously. We had to reign in our plans several times. Here we are skinning up on skis towards Meall a Bhuiridh before the wind really picked up. Eventually we gave up and went for a hot chocolate at the ski centre.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/02/77.jpg

Saturday started with snow and wind so we decided to go to the pub. Someone suggested going via Beinn a Chrulaiste. I'm glad they did because the weather cleared up and we we treated to some glorious views. Here we are approaching the King's House.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/02/78.jpg

After a swift pint we trudged back along the military road and were treated to another fine moonlight view of the hut.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/02/79.jpg

Sunday was supposed to be a short day. We walked down to Jimmy Saville's house at Allt-na-Reigh then up onto Am Bodach and back along the ridge. I actually needed my crampons for the first time in several years. Here's Mrs A on here 50th birthday looking out down Glen Coe.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/...2009/02/80.jpg

We didn't actually get back to the hut 'til gone 5 then packed up and went to the King's House for food. John used the internet connection there to look up the weather forecast - blizzards affecting the whole country! The journey back was very slow in places so we didn't get home 'til gone 2 this morning!

Our school wasn't closed due to people not being able to get it, it was all health and safety. It's all well and good parents arguing that kids should be at school no matter of the weather, but what if their child falls over and breaks a bone, you can't win. We have had one member of staff break their wrist in two places, and a local school which was open had numerous injuries.

BTW im not a teacher so i didn't get as much time off, as soon as i could walk to my office without falling over i was in.

It's fairly belting down here now. And Sunday night's lot has only just thawed! Worse, it's falling on top of ground that is frozen hard after days and days of sub-zero temperatures, including -5c last night.

But despite all this, yesterday afternoon (which was bright and sunny, although bitterly cold) I checked the control panel for our solar panels and found them generating about 66c. :spin: It's nice to be able to get free hot water even in the middle of winter ... :D

Only when the wood-pellet stove is burning constantly! The walls are quite thin and badly in need of insulating work. The solar panels generate lots of hot water for the cylinder, which does make it easier to warm the house because all the stove's heat can go to the radiators.

According to Sky news, the snow will clear overnight in London, and turn to rain, here is Isleworth, Middlesex it is not laying.

Do you have panels or tubes and do you mind if I ask the manufacture?

only a little bit of snow and took ages to settle down in Bromley so if the transport system can't cope with this then they don't deserve to still be running it

Well the snow started settling at 4pm and stopped around 9.30pm. I thought it was light drizzle at that time but now i can't tell, but it's falling off the cars, so i think it's melting.

it's pretty much melted ontop of the hill where I live in Luton, save for the usual couple of inches of snow and thick ice left around *our block*!!! bah!

Wish we had had the snow rather than the strong winds and heavy rain we did earlier, made my night hell trying to photograph a job! Ah well.
