So what's going to be different from the last few years' efforts? The addition of Peter Crouch??

BBKing 09-10-2005 11:10

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

The addition of Wayne Rooney. You must have heard of him, surely?

Russ 09-10-2005 11:14

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Ah yes. The one player who will change England from being quarter-final losers in to World Cup winners??

Even I'm not that ambitious!

Agreed he's one of the best Strikers in the world england would have won Euro
04 if he hadn’t got injured.

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Well, I don't think we'll win it, but having one of the world's best players in the side can't hurt. Remember we had Heskey alongside Owen against Brazil in 2002.

Russ 09-10-2005 11:22

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Naturally I'm full of admiration for Rooney but the additon of him won't win it alone - the firepower is there (apart from when Crouch is up front) but I don't see it in the rest of the team. Beckham isn't the player he was 5 years ago (not that England came close to winning the World Cup - or anything - back then) and Rio is hardly firing on all cylinders. The Chelsea connection of Cole/Lampard/Terry (along with Rooney) is the only thing I think England can base their hopes on.

You still won't win though :D

Bernabeu bosses plot January bid...........

Quote:

REAL MADRID will make a £20mill ion move for Thierry Henry in January.
And the Spanish giants believe they have a great chance of capturing Arsenal's 28-year-old superstar striker.
Madrid aim to ruthlessly exploit the news that Henry has cancelled all contract talks with the Gunners until next summer. The Spaniards are aware that will leave the French hero with just one year of his current deal.
So Bernabeu bosses will gamble that Highbury's top brass will sell in January rather than risk losing him on the cheap next summer.

Re: The Football Thread 2005/2006 Season

Ooh, credible media source. Not. I'd possibly swap Henry for Fernando Torres, come next year. Him and Reyes are a top pairing. But how much better to have all three *drool*. OK, a man can dream.

To be honest I reckon if Rooney hadn't got injuried in Euro 2004 England would have won it.

I was at the match on Saturday, great atmosphere. Pity about the result. When we went 2-nil down the fans were singing "We're going to win 3-2" We nearly did it as well. Should have had a pen when the keeper brought Healy - if the Welsh one was a pen - that incident was a stone wall one.

World Cup Qualifiers

As an English person and and England football supporter I would like to say how disappointing it is that Wales, Northern Ireland and Eire have not qualified.

I always hope they do well - Good luck for Euro 2008.

I would also like to say how thrilled and delighted I am that Scotland have not qualified. But I hope their recent run of 1 result helped lift them above the Faroe Islands in the world rankings.

Not afraid to say a **** poor performance from us today and thats it end of.

Unlike some who will blame the lack or performance due to the absence of Henry, Campbell, Cole, Van Persie and Hleb.

Admittedly there were a few good saves from Kirkland but as an Arsenal fan another **** poor performance from us and we have not won away since May.

Grrrrr title is in the bag for Chelski again but at least we have consolation that they again have pretty much bought it not won it.

Agreed - and I think it's amazing at the number of Chelsea supporters in denial who still won't admit they bought the title - but isn't it funny that their success seemed to coincide with Abramovich buying the club....

Being in a spending league apart from the rest and buying success are two VERY different things! Was there ever a season where United previously had very little success and bought a handful of very expensive players and won the title the very next year?

Clue: No.

That's the mancs for ya!

Any club would buy the best players possible if they had a blank cheque,
getting them players to gel and the right manager to do it is the tricky bit.

The mancs need to realize that time is up,the good players have gone and Ferguson's luck has ran out.
How much did he buy Veron and Ferdinand for?

Well done Chelsea, i hope they kick ass until we (Liverpool) are ready to challenge them.

DALGLISH leaving wasn't our downfall,Souness taking over was!

Shankly,Paisley,Fagan and Dalglish all left strong teams,
will Ferguson do that?
He should have left years ago,now he'll get the American boot if they don't win anything this year.

...err,i didn't say he wasn't!

I said our downfall was due to Souness, getting rid of the players and changing too many things in the routine at Anfield.

Next round. :D

I am sure that the "lesser" clubs use this competition as games for trialists etc, still, it raises much needed revenue for the less well off clubs.

As for the draw, I am not sure, even their own web site is not up to date, Woking who beat Forest tonight are classed as 250/1 to win it :D but that might have been last season, I can't see Forest in the list http://www.ldv.co.uk/trophy/html/news/news03.htm

It looks like Forest didn't make it though, but I guess it won't bother nffc to much.

Perhaps the competition ought to be renamed, it might have a bit more attraction.

Suppose it's clear that Megson cares more about the league- like to have won though, although I'd take promotion over a cup run. Not that we'll get either...

Bopp and Weir-Daley at least got on the scoresheet... team of kids and Gary ****ing Holt. Joke.

Darren Fletcher??? why?

I am a Man Utd fan, but why o why does Sir Alex persist in playing "Darren Fletcher" what does he bring to the team? last night for example we had Smith and Fletcher in what looked to me as deep holding roles, am not the manager but i would imagine we only need one player doing that? Smith did good job but Fletcher just chased shadows and screwed up simple passes.

right, any other Man Utd fans out thier wanna throw in your thoughts; in my opinion it should have been park/rossi from start instead of Fletcher.

Van Der Sar
G.Neville
Ferdinand
Silvestre
Heinze

Keane
Park
Giggs
Ronaldo

Rooney
Ruud

Re: Darren Fletcher??? why?

I reckon that Defence and forward line is Ok, but the Midfield should be like this
Ronaldo,
Park,
Smith,
Scholes.

They can all pound forward, but smith now can play the holding role as well - Keane - as good as he is, is not as fit as he is either.

I agree that Park should have been on infront of Fletcher

i only put Keane in cause he still pulls out the performances otherwise i would put smith in. i don't know about Scholes and Ronaldo. . Ronaldo makes strikers/forwards do double runs cause he beats players then tracks back and trys to beat them again he should gain a yard then wip it in! and Scholes hasnt been same player for last 2 seasons. he has faded more than keane has in my eyes.

AC Milan have given a contract to Paolo Maldini's 9 year old son Christian.

Assuming he makes it and plays for the first team, would this be the first time that 3 generations (Paolo's father was captain of Milan) have played for the same club?

Rooney To Take On The Sun
Wayne Rooney's libel case against The Sun will begin just weeks before next summer's World Cup.

The proceedings, which stem from The Sun's allegation that Rooney slapped his fiancÃÃâ€*’©e, Coleen McLoughlin, in a nightclub, are bound to disrupt both the newspaper and playerââ‚Ã⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s preparations for the finals in Germany, says the media guardian.

'The trial is due to begin just five weeks before the World Cup kicks off in Germany on June 9, engaging the tabloid in a bitter court battle at the same time it is due to be championing Rooney and his England team-mates in its pages,' the website adds.

Probably a load of rubbish. Guy I work with is friends with Gillespie - he and his family went through hell when he was falsely accused.

Ronaldo just doesn't seem the type, although that's no real indication.

Agreed, and if he is innocent, which I have no doubt that he is, he might think "I have had enough" and go back home, It is possible a transfer request could be on the horizon, which would be a concern for Man Utd.

I just hope it doesn't come to that.

I'm not going to make any Comments about the Ronaldo case untill it's legally sorted out one way of the other. :)
