Unable to upgrade connection

When I try to upgrade my connection (currently 1.5mb) to the 3mb service, I enter my email address on the NTL website & it says that im not the account registered for the internet, strange as im the primary email address for the account since day one...

Is anyone at NTL able to look into this for me as im a little concerned as to who is the primary account...

Thanks

Best bet might be to give BB tech support a call on Monday, or to give CS a quick phone call.

Oh, and you may find that this get's [MERGED] with the main upgrade thread, maybe..... ;)

Fiddlesticks !!

I knew there was a downside to getting a cable modem instead of a set top .... ;)

Both protocols work fine - occasionally users that do not understand will state 'My connection is the Pitts' which generates confusion with the romantically inclined.

Hi guys, newbie here

I am on a discounted rate for 750k broadband and was wondering whether upgrading the speed online will revert me to the standard price for 2meg.

Thanks...

Unfortunately yes it will. If you have it upgraded now, you will lose your offer. If you wait till the automatic upgrades, the offer will stand

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Hi Dexter K

Can you elaborate on the automatic upgrade situation please. From my point of view this is a myth. We are now nearly 6 weeks after the start of this upgrade, a billing point has passed, and I have seen nothing, not even a letter from NTL to let me know what is going on. Were it not for this forum I would not know that upgrades were happening and there are probably thousands of NTL customers in precisely this situation.

I am trying to be patient, having spoken to CS a few times, and progressed from the can't access the booking system to the SAMSUNG STB won't work for you get a SACM advice. I refer to my equally patient friend CAPTAIN747480 (see post 958 on page 64 of this thread ) who seems to have been upgraded to a 1MB service on a PACE STB. I don't live that far away, not in Blackheath but, as far as I can tell, also an ex C&W area on the Bromley router. I have recently needed to reboot my STB but my BB stays at 750K.

Having been scanning this Forum for a while now it seems to me that those with SACMs have no problem and can get whatever speed they want. Those with SAMSUNG STBs are in a similar position. Those with PACE STBs who are happy with speeds up to 1MB are also OK. The only problem group is the PACE STB users who want > 1MB of which I am one. We have to be a minority and the only ones who require some real effort, not just a hit to the box, so I would like to know what you are doing for us. I am prepared to wait provided I get a decent result. I initially thought "great, lose the PACE for a SAMSUNG" but then, having been told that SAMSUNGs won't work in this area and having read on this forum that they are not neccessarily the greatest thing since sliced bread I think "stick with the PACE, even if it doesn't like talking to the handset, and get a SACM as well". Is this how it has to be and when will it be so?

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Hi Sloopy

Im not aware that Samsung boxes and certain regions clash with each other but my knowledge on that could hardly be considered extensive. What I can tell you though is I advise ALL customers to get a SACM. The main problem we have right now is a lack of Samsung boxes. I dont believe ntl thought it would have this much of an impact in terms of how many people on 750k and 1.5mb had PACE STB's.

Automatic upgrades probably wont come till May/June due to the enormity of the project.

If your happy to get a SACM, this would be my suggestion as the service is more reliable. Also if you have TV issues, it wont affect your BB and vice versa. To get a SACM, give the sales team a ring on 0800 052 0459. Its free install too. Just mention your not able to get a Samsung box due to technical difficulties in your area and they'll do it for ya

Hope This Helps, if not i'll be back

Dex

Not very many had 1.5Mb Pace STBs - they were replaced by Samsungs many months ago. 750k is an issue, though, they should be upgraded to a Samsung prior to 2MB upgrades going through.

However, AFAIK there aren't a lot of Samsungs in the ex-Videotron areas, which he may (just) be in - I can check if I have his STB MAC or smartcard number. In that case a SACM replacement would be the only reasonable option.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

i thought if you lived in a broadband through a STB area then you had to have a STB and couldn't get a SACM..

in an ideal world we would all have samsungs as they are better boxes than the Pace's anyway and also a SACM

Thanks for the response Dex.

An example of genuine and useful communication. :tu:You're not looking for a liaison job are you? I will take your advice and request an SACM.

BBKing, your instincts are spot on, I am in an ex Videotron area. Does that require some form of penance, are we to be pitied or are we worthy of special treatment?;)

I 'Upgraded' on April 6th to a Samsung box after CS told me i would need a new STB. Box worked the telly right away, the internet is another story. After calling CS about a million times and getting different problems from them m internet was finally switched back on but not until 18th April. not bad 12 days to throw a switch (i may have to apply for a job) hey but now i'm flying at 2meg :) All the good words i had to say about customer services have now gone, to be replaced by malice and anger. Come on NTL get your finger out plz.

freedom broadband

hi
my friend is on 512k freedom broadband and she wants to know if ntl are going to upgrade the speed like the rest of the ntl customers?
can anyone answer this for her
many thanks

Chris W 19-04-2005 20:57

Re: freedom broadband

I don't believe they are....

speeds on freedom are controlled by factors outside of ntl's control- such as line quality and distance from the BT exchange

Ignition 19-04-2005 21:08

Re: freedom broadband

Nope not going to happen.

Although 90% or more of the people on Freedom could receive an upgrade to 1Mbit, not going to happen at the moment.

NTL have less control over the costs of supplying Freedom, that's probably the primary reason, the pound sterling.

Upgrade Confusion

I was just speaking to NTL CS about a billing matter and while I was speaking to the guy he asked me about upgrading to 1Mb from my current 300K broadband. I told him I didnt want to because I was under the impression that I was on a 1Gb per day download limit with my old 300K deal but by upgrading to 1Mb would then reduce that to 3Gb per month. He then told me that while I was on the 300K deal my download limit was only 3Gb anyway. I argued that this wasnt correct but without being armed with hard facts, I conceded and upgraded to the new speed(why not if the limits are the same I thought). The problem is that i've been downloading as if I have been allowed 30Gb per month, does this mean I will get a stroppy letter? I expressed this concern to the CS guy and he told me that NTL charge for extra download usage, he didnt know exactly but said it was roughly £3.50 for a few extra Gb.

Is this right or have I been royally misled by NTL?

Re: Upgrade Confusion

Update: Phoned NTL to speak to someone else to query this and they agreed with me that with my old 300K service my download limit was 1Gb per day and with the new 1Mb this has now obviously changed. I told her that I wanted to go back to the 300K service but she insisted she couldnt do it as I had been put on the 1Mb service just minutes earlier. I then argued that I had been misled into upgrading an I wanted to speak to someone who could sort it out. She then went away, came back and told me that the download limits arent actually being enforced until the end of the year(even although subscribers are being told that the limits are in place at the moment) so I can carry on downloading my usual 1Gb per day without fear of a stroppy letter or charges.

Is this correct? has anyone else heard of this? Im now worried that ive been misinformed again and if I carry on downloading my usual amount the NTL police will swing in through my windows and seize my pc.

The tier migration page doesn't work for me (gives an SMS error message), and I really don't have the patience to fight my way through the telephone lines. I'm still on 750k, waiting, waiting, waiting...

Speed upgrades on 750 and 1.5mb are not optional. Theres no need to a new cable modem, they all support all 3 speeds

Shouldn't be a problem as the CM is the first device connected to the cable so it should be detected whether it's connected to a router or not!

You may have to telephone them on the number on the upgrade page!

Hi, I'm also in Leicester on 750k, just came back from 2 weeks holiday anticipating new upgraded speeds, disappointed when nothing had happened. Tried tier migration on line & got error message saying 'unable to upgrade at this time etc., phone 0800 etc.' So phoned the no. - option 2, lady at other end confirmed that upgrade wouldn't be a problem, confirmed cost still £24.99. She put it through, asked me to turn off modem, PCs etc. for an hour. Just switched back on & SUCCESS! now on 2Mb:). Can't fault her service, just hope no cock-ups with billing etc. - let's be optimistic.

Glad to hear it. To be honest I haven't (touch wood) had any problems with ntl. The few times I've needed to contact them, customer service has been available & helpful. Though if the upgrade hadn't come about I, like many, would have quite happily jumped ship to one of the many good ADSL offers around. (just out of interest, has anyone used Bulldog's 4Mb service?)

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

Hi

Just thought i would add my two penn'orth. Been following the thread for a while, and took the plunge to upgrade from 300k to 1 Meg about 4 weeks ago. I'm in Sussex (ex CWC) and have STB + NTL phone. I thought that when I asked for the U/G that they would say that my Pace STB would be OK; but no I would need an nice silver Samsung. Fine.

Installation day came on 14th April, and appeared to go well. The engineer said that B/B might take a while to register. After a couple of hours I phoned CS, and spoke to a very helpful Welsh chappie, who said that B/B hadn't been added to my service, but did it there and then. Fine.

The installation engineer also said that our TV signal level was too low, and very helpfully checked it all out. He concluded that the problem was with the cable from the street to the house. He would organise for a new one to be fitted on 20th. Fine.

20th came and went - no new cable. Not so fine.

Eventually found out it was to be fitted on 27th (yesterday). OK. House was empty between 9 AM and 10.30 AM. Came home and no obvious sign of anyone from NTL having called. About 2 PM it became apparent that the phone didn't work, either incoming or outcoming. After a bit of detective work skulking in the bushes, it transpired that a new cable had been fitted. Any connection (sic) with the non-functioning phone I wondered? Also discovered that the street end of the cable had been left looped on the pavement in just the right place for someone to trip over!!

Phoned CS. They arranged for a phone engineer to come out this morning (28th) He confirmed what I thought; the phone wires hadn't been connected!! He also agreed that the looped cable was not acceptable. Also had my monthly bill today - guess what. They have charged me for B/B twice!! Not happy.

To cap (sic) it all, I had a phone call from someone at NTL doing a customer satisfaction survey!! Needless to say I communicated my thoughts!

1st 128K took 2134 ms = 61421 Bytes/sec = approx 511 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1552 ms = 84454 Bytes/sec = approx 703 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1973 ms = 66433 Bytes/sec = approx 553 kbits/sec

I'm in Old Harlow- same service area as CM23 I think, and have just upgraded to 2Mb via the NTL website link.

The U/G page said upgrade to 2Mb for no change to monthly sub, so I'm eagerly awaiting 1st bill- as an early BB customer, I only pay £19.99 per month, including CM rental.

There's small print on there somewhere that says that you don't get to keep your existing discounts (it's either have the discount or have the free upgrade) so you will probably find that you are now being charged £24.99 like everybody else.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

I read that I am to expect to be auto-upgraded from 1.5mb/s to 3mb/s. As I see on the Ntlhome page, 3mb is being offered to new customers in this area so I assume I ought to have it now, but I don't.
I have read here that some people have gone to upgrade their service themselves, manually.
Is that to be recommended, despite the upgrade supposedly automatic? Or is 3mb still not available, even to new customers?!

Thanks

Nigel

give c.s. a ring and ask them , it may also be worth rebooting your modem as it may need it for the speed upgrade :)

Hi,

Just to let pepople know, if they have 750KB Cable modem access for £24.99 from NTL., like I had...... you need to call the customer services and get your acccount upgraded immediatly to the 2 MB service. For the last 3 weeks they have been offering the 2 MB cable connection for the same £24.99 a month. (1 Gig d/load limit per day). For some reason it appears to be a well kept secret from existing customers... that you have to ask for the upgrade...

Customer services says that they will eventually automatically upgrade everybodies accounts but it may take until the end of the year to do it. This is because they have so many customers and they are getting so many new ones each day.

Unless an existing 750Kb customers asks for the upgrade to be done immediatly they could wait for another 6 months and still be charged £25 for only a slower 750kbs connection......... seems like a little bit of a rip off really....... so phone now and ASK FOR YOUR UPGRADE NOW it won't cost you penny extra for them to do the upgrade to a blisterling fast speed. They did mine in under 10 minutes of making the call.

Bit longer than 3 weeks closer to 6 now I think.

What ********, is there one person individually doing the upgrades one account at a time?

Nah it's not a very good site for cable users at all, as its' name ADSLGuide suggests it's mostly centred around DSL ISPs.

Yep IMHO a far superior test to Robin Walker's, by his own admission it's just a quick test he put together though some evangelise over it.

Also worth checking for transatlantic speeds are the tests at http://www.broadbandreports.com/stest just be careful which test server you use as some will give very poor results. Personally I find the Burlington Canada based one at http://speedtest.cogeco.net is pretty good.

A 231.1 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 256508 bps, or 250 kbps.

Which is about right.

No, they haven't kept it secret. They've been advertising it for crying out loud. Where have you been? :o

Again, BS. You may get upgraded if you call CS, you may not. Yes, it is a free upgrade - but peple have known this for months and ntl haven't kept it a secret.... :erm:

Either I've missed some amazing technological development, or an adsl site is still pretty useless to cable users.... :dunce:

Not really a well kept secret. It was revealed months ago on here (and on Digitalspy) and I got a note in my bill last month advising me of the upgrade.

Not to get OT but I feel someone needs to stick up for the joker :) He/she was being civil until everyone else ripped into him/her so it is a little unfair for you to just label him/her uncivil :erm:

I do hope you don't disagree with me and start calling me uncivil :D

By the way I've only replied because the joker has paid me to :p:

The problem with forums is it is difficult to get your exact opinion across without managing to upset one or two people in the process because unless you plaster your posts with the right smilies in the right place some people might take offence or even start insulting your lack of 'on the ballness' :td:

I really wasn't paid any money just in case people can't read into this post that I am being slightly sarcastic  It's just late and I'm bored and I've got nothing better to do :D

:Peaceman: let's all calm down and :handshake

You don't need to phone CS- just take the link from NTLWorld's Homepage to "Your Account: Upgrade your speed". It takes about 2 minutes and a reboot of the cable modem to get the increased speed to 2Mb. You do need to phone CS to get the 3Mb service.

That is assuming you are getting access through a cable modem. If you use an STB (like me), you need to phone NTL.

Re: *ALL* Speed Upgrade Discussion In Here Please (Part 4)

I upgraded yesterday from the 750k service to the 2Mb service and the whole thing took less that 10 minutes.

I got a new shiny Samsung STB and though my broadband does seem faster the change in speed is not as dramatic as I would have expected.

I found a broadband speed tester and came up with these results:-

Fri, 6 May 2005 09:00:50 UTC
1st 128K took 781 ms = 167826 Bytes/sec = approx 1396 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1250 ms = 104858 Bytes/sec = approx 872 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 890 ms = 147272 Bytes/sec = approx 1225 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1063 ms = 123304 Bytes/sec = approx 1026 kbits/sec

Fri, 6 May 2005 09:11:31 UTC
1st 128K took 812 ms = 161419 Bytes/sec = approx 1343 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1078 ms = 121588 Bytes/sec = approx 1012 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1063 ms = 123304 Bytes/sec = approx 1026 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1062 ms = 123420 Bytes/sec = approx 1027 kbits/sec

Just wondered if one of the mods could tell me if these speeds are typical as I was told by someone I should be getting 2000kbits/sec.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I should have mentioned in my last post that after the new Samsung box was connected the TV picture began to demonstrate problems.

When changing channels the newly selected channel would start up in black & white and would gradually return to colour. Also noticed that there was a slight flicker. Anybody else had the same problems?

Also discovered that I cannot access the settings menu to activate subtitles, swap between RGB & composite, change the size of the TV bar etc.

Are there any hidden engineer menus on the Samsung box that would allow me to do that please?

Hey ntluser,

The easiest way to check your configured speed is to use your remote control and press page up, page down, then the blue button. Then keep pressing the OK button on your remote until you see QOS. It should be stb-med but I think you're still on the 1 meg level that your Pace box was temporarily upgraded to (stb-low).

Hope this helps,

Phil.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for that. My Pace box was never upgraded to stb-low. The engineer came and did a direct swap. Prior to May 5th I was on 750k. It's possible that it is only temporary but I'll check the menus and see. Thanks again.

Hi Phil,

Just checked my box and the QOS shows stb.light.cm. I am paying £24.99 a month for broadband and so I am expecting to get the 2Mb service.

Perhaps one of the mods could confirm what that setting should be.

NTL are automatically upgrading people, but it takes time. You can hurry them up by phoning Customer Services, or applying on NTL's web site (here).

If you are on a discounted scheme (some people got 750K for £19.99) , you will lose the discount.
