WTF????????

I can only think of Schmeichel (sp?) and possibly Henry (did Juve win the European Cup while he was there?). Other than that, I thought maybe Pires, although I have no idea what he did before Arsenal!

Anelka isn't in the France side at the moment and don't think he was in the squad at Euro 2000 either.. So it looks like just Schmeiical and Desailly unless i'm completely wrong on Anelka

if you mean still playing then would have to be Ryan Giggs, 8 Prem titles, 1 European Cup, 1 League Cup, 3 FA Cups, 1 Inter-Continental Cup,

think if you mean retired as well then I think it's Phil Neil from Liverpool

Much more important:

1) Can football or at least sport have its own forum or sub-forum? one topic is not enough because conversations just get replaced and some times people can come on and we have gone though 2 topics already.

2) Ranieri is going.....

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ue/3683479.stm

Its a shame, hes a good manager and the fans want him so what on earth are they doing?! But much more interestingly he says he knows whos taking over "just like you" the only person that keeps getting mentioned is Sven so it looks like he is off the chelsea.
So any other ideas, and who should be the next England manager?

he might be talking about Mourinho of Porto or even someone like Lippi.. Doesn't have to be Sven.. Don't think Sven is that great a manager really... he just reads the Sun looks at who the fans think should play for England then picks then.. He was the man who picked Rickets, Powell, Vassell, Heskey, Phil Neville  and at the WC Sinclair wasn't good enough to make the squad and then played in nearly all the games :Yikes:

I think hes done alright, we only get beaten by brazil in the WC and getting into europe wasn't too tricky. We are not that good a team to win the WC but he take us as far as we could go.

We should give our managers more time

After all the hoo-ha of the last few weeks, I think that Sven knows he would get absolutely blasted if he now took the Chelsea job. I know that there will be various options and clauses in his new England contract but, bearing in mind his misgivings over the way he has been treated by the English media (rightly or wrongly †“ you make your own decision on that ;) ), I wouldnÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t be surprised if he left England if he resigns.

The most recent suggestions for the Chelsea job have been Mourinho (untested outside Portugal), Lippi (very successful), and Trappatoni (if he leaves the Italy job).

But you were knocked out of the World Cup at the usual point, and qualification for the Euro tournament is something England have never really had a problem doing.

So really, he hasn't done any better or worse than, say your last 10 managers.

(Apart from Graham Taylor).

So why is Sven considered to be so special? When SAF was thinking of retiring, Sven's name was thrown in to the ring. But why? He has yet to prove himself to be anything special at international level.

sherer 04-05-2004 16:30

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

i don't think Sven has done anything at all.. He's just basically picked the same players we had before.. we haven't got any more drive, direction or technical skill than we had before he took over.. just look at how many rubbish performances we have put in.. Australia and Sweden to name a few.. yes these were friendlies but we should still be beating those sides..

Look at the rubbish players he picks Phil Neville, Heskey and Rickets being prime examples.. he just basically reads the Sun and then picks the team say think we should play with..

If we were playing better football or doing new things at set plays etc it would e ok but we just the same as when he started..

In all fairness Russ, Svens record in competitive matches is still very good (I think that the World Cup quarter final is still the only defeat). However, as an England fan, I have to be honest and say that I wish he would stop faffing about with the team in friendlies †“ itâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s a good idea to use new players / those on the periphery of the team but, other than that stick to the core team and work around those players he knows he will want in Championships etc (barring injury etc)

You're missing the point - I'm not saying he's a rubbish manager. I'm asking if he's done anything which marks him out amongst other top-level managers. When the Man United job looked like it was available, his name was pushed forward. He's constantly linked with Chelsea - I'm asking why, seeing as he has not done anything which makes him any better than any other manager of that level.

Consider his record against previous England managers - I see nothing which stands out.

sherer 04-05-2004 16:41

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

yes agree about faffing about in friendlies.. the sweden match was a prime example.. i knew as soon as i say the team that we would play sh*te.. everyone had been talking about playing Thomspon on the left and as usual Sven went with what press said but he played him in a team with about 8 other changes as well so he couldn't see how well he would perform with the proper side that would start in Euro 04..

I can only name one player he has actually brought into the England side who wasn't there when it took over and is Lampard and that's more because he's a classy player than anything Sven has done..

Sorry mate - just proves I am a :dunce: !

I seem to remember that he has been moderately successful, both in Sweden and Italy. However, I do see your point - I think that the reason that he's continually linked with the top jobs like Man U and Chelsea is because he is quite experienced at that level (ie clubs who are consistently challenging for honours) and because, in the grand scheme of things, I think some clubs and the media believe that it would be easier to entice Sven away from the England job (particularly as his contract was due to expire after Euro 2004 and he has made it clear that he doesnÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t like not being involved in day to day management) than somebody like Martin Oâ₠™Neill from Celtic.

I'd say that's probably the only reason - his England record is nothing outstanding.

We have certainly got a better match record. Apart from that hes only been in one cup with england and that was the World cup in which we did reasonably well. Sure we didn't win but we lost to brazil (and put up a good performance) who are a great side.

Top 8 finish is also fair enough considering our team we are certainly not in the top 5 of the world. For a first try he did very well. We need consistency in our managers so I think we should stick with him until the next world cup

But don't England always go out at the quarter-final stage, assuming they get there?

He took your team one step further.

Not quite what I'd call outstanding. And a better match record? Considering the quality of opposition, I'd say the only memorable game was against a below-par Germany in 2001.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that what Russ is saying is that he can't understand why Sven has been so hyped up (sorry if I'm wrong Russ, but that's the way I'm reading it :) ).

At the end of the day, I think it boils down to the fact that, when Keegan started the World Cup campaign, England were absolutely woeful, and Sven has been credited (rightly or wrongly) with turning results around (again, purely in competitive matches).

Becks shock
David Beckham has told Manchester United he would go back to the club if Alex Ferguson went. The United board contacted Becks about a sensational return this summer. And the England skipperââ‚à ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s advisers confirmed he is ready to say yes †” but only if Fergie is not boss. Beckham, 29, was forced out of Old Trafford after a bust-up with Ferguson last season and joined Spanish giants Real Madrid for £25mill ion. But Beckham is now resigned to leaving Spain this summer after a season dogged by problems in his private life. He wants to return to England and be with his family and believes it is just a matter of choosing the right Premiership club. Becks still has a house near Manchester and keeps in touch with pal, United full-back Gary Neville.

Since this topic' was first started off about stoke's win against manu, just thought i'd say Stoke got a very well deserved win against West Brom, 4-1 today :)

I reckon stoke's season has been great this year.. est. themselves as a strong div1 team.. gave many a team a whooping ;) Oh to next year :)

What? Hes done well. Not many people at arsenal who dont like him. He hasn't scored many premiership goals but has played well and is showing potential

Either way it scared me a bit today, but we managed to stick it out which is what championship teams are meant to do

I'm fairly sure Monaco will win with that type of advantage, yet they aren't a patch on Chelsea or Arsenal.

They are not but thats not really relevant.

They are a good solid side and can easily keep there lead tomorrow they also have some good few talented creative players but they will never amount to anything because there isnt enough money in the french league. They are at their peck before they players are nicked!

Arsenal are not that type of team either! we dont have much money, our ground is crap everton have a bigger ground. All our players have been cheap, we buy them unknown e.g piers and henry and they become world class. We dont even have the ability to pay the sort of wages man u and chelsea can offer. Yet we won the title dispite millions and millions spent by the other big two.

Its not all about most money = most wins

I am just pointing out that money still doesnt mean victory in football. We should be happy about that

But it has been said before, time and time again

Not by me, In fact it doesn't get said that much. We are usually seen as a big team in finance but we are quite low down in the table in that respect.

Thats why we are getting a stadium but till then (and a while after) we still wont be able to do a united or chelsea summer spending spree :(

yes no one needed to know money doesent mean everything in football, its about man management, tactics, and building an army who know what they are set out to do on the pitch, they know where each other are on the pitch, and know when to stand off and let things fall in to place instead of going in for a rash tackle.....

Its hard to build a team like you mentioned though. Chelsea have been able to do it but gods know hoe much they spent. However it can go wrong aka leeds united

you over spend and you will turn in to another leeds, you have to spend wisely unless your a multi billionaire, having said that money is only a tiny percentage of success, its what you do with the players you buy and create a balance in the team in all areas of the team's game, its about creating a backbone in the squad, not just buying the multi million pound players and letting the team become 'stale' and players dont gel, its about atmosphere, and having a leader in the team, the staff, manager, coaches, physio, balance is key, thats why you get teams like monaco doing well, because they have some of everything, sure they are not rich but they compensate on that very easily.

United did the same, remember the saying by Alan Hanson, "You can't win anything with kids"

Beckham, Scholes, Butt, Neville's, Giggs cost united nothing.

Its only over the last few seasons Ferguson has spent quite a few quid.
And on some players that didn't fit in i.e. Barthez, Taibli, Stam, although I think Stam was good but he had a run in with SAF.

The signing of last century has to be Cantona, a snip at £1 million.
The signing of this century has to be Ronaldo on his showings so far.
The biggest waste of money although he is a class centre half has to be Ferdinand at £30 Million, no centre half is worth that kind of money imo, I think manu were trying to bail Leeds out by paying all that loot.

I admit Wenger has done well with the resources he has at hand, but time will tell I suppose.

Most definitely Kronas, I don't think united's is quite over yet, it will also depend on who will eventually replace SAF.

I hope it will be Martin O'Neil

btw, nice to see you back posting in here

No, our biggest waste of money was Ali G.
