Ref this new speed then, is the price staying at £37.99 as planned? (for the 1.5mbit that is). If this is the case then I may well move across to ADSL after all becuase although the 1.5mbit is very nice indeed, I would rather pay £30 a month for 1mbit/256, get a email service that works, a web space with PHP and MYSQL and of course been able to use this Fab speed on a more constant basis (Scunthorpe + others i think have some major problems at the moment).

I want to change my poll answer now to YES - I have been upgraded, initially like a spoilt child throwing a tantrum, :p: I had voted NO - because I had yet to be upgraded, but now I'm sitting pretty on 750K. ;)

SACMs will respond to the upgraded speed with a reboot, the theory on here at the moment is that STBs will not respond to a speed increase until all the STBs in the Area, Country, World (as appropriate) have been changed to Samsung ones.

(This is for the 1Mb service, 150-300 will see little difference on an STB as it was really 256-300, 600>750 should be done if your area says so, but all Pace STBs cannot cope with bandwidth above 1Mb so are being swapped out).

Yes, no 1Mb STBs are done anywhere at all. That guy who's 1536x4 result was in the post was in Stafford, a non-STB area.

Reason being that the STBs are done by rolling out a new file and rebooting the relevant STBs remotely. No file rollout = no speed upgrade.

SACMs won't necessarily pick up the new speed with a reboot, they're not upgraded in the same way, with a single new file.

Gimme your MAC and I'll check, but I'd suspect the usual margin of error in online speed tests - caps aren't 100% and speed tests aren't 100%, but over enough trials you usually get a good average - what's the average of eight trials?

I'm using EMule/bit Torrent etc and ever since I recieved the new samsung SMT 2100c EMule does not work correctly.

Downloads speeds are at 1-2k and upload speed decreases if my downloads increase. also browsing web pages is VEEERRRYY SLLOWW if EMule is running. When I close EMule web browsing speeds up. Downloading from web sites is fine just as long as I close EMule (Even if nothing is in the download queue)

I have tried deleteing the MAC address registration associated with my account then rebooting my STB and renew the IP on PC

The link doesn't work, it's got ... in the middle of it where it's been shortened by something.

Get some kind of bandwidth meter for your PC - Kerio Personal Firewall works pretty well, as it's not only a firewall but gives you bandwidth readings for every program that's using the internet as well. That might help you solve your problem.

It seems the only solution is to get my old pace box back. I'm on the 600k service so it can handle the 750k speed upgrade those of you on the 1mbit connection will have to chose between having either samsung 1.5mbit with no P2P OR the pace with P2P but no speed upgrade. Is this the beginning of the end for P2P?????????????

Psychotext 17-08-2004 11:43

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

Is there any particular reason that you are using a STB instead of a SACM? On another note... have you tried changing all of your ports (This is possible in edonkey, don't know about emule). Of course, it might not be down to port checkers.... it may very well be that this new STB reads packet header information to see if you are using P2P and starts dropping those packets.

ANORAK2001 17-08-2004 11:51

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I think I will change over to a SACM also I have tried changing my ports but still does not work. Do you think it could be something in the Samsung Engineers menu ??.

If they have put packet sniffing technology into the samsung I doubt they would make it particularly easy to turn off (So no, it's probably not in the engineer's menu).

That would be legally dubious of NTL. P2P is not illegal, so they couldn't justify blocking it without contacting customers to let them know about it.

I have to say I'm a little sceptical that NTL would do this, or that one of their first-line support team would be the one to announce it to the world. Can you give any more info about how this conversation happened?

Are there any staffers around that can shed any light on this?

Psychotext 17-08-2004 12:44

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I too would be very surprised if this was the case. I would be even more surprised that NTL admitted it! Perhaps the tech was a little confused (We are talking about scripted first line reps here).

Kneebs 17-08-2004 12:56

Actually it doesn't answer any question at all. I don't know who all the Samsug users are, and neither do you. To my knowledge, nowhere near enough of them have posted in here saying they have trouble with P2P apps for you to draw that conclusion.

Now, the question I asked was this: Can you please tell us a little more about the conversation you had with someone at NTL regarding this? Who was he/she? What did he say? When was this? What was the reason for your phone call to NTL?

Facts are a lot more useful than innuendo.

First, having just quickly skimmed through the Terms and Conditions, there is nothing that explicitly bans the use of P2P software (which can be used legitimately), so, as Chris T says, NTL would be on dubious ground by doing this.

Second, the Samsung boxes have been around a while now. A couple of members of this site were also involved in beta testing them. How come no one else has come up with this "info"?

Third, and perhaps one of our NTL employees could answer this. Assuming the box did filter out these packets, would front line tech support staff know?

If they have put packet sniffing technology into the samsung
What a load of old balls. There's enough stuff to get right in a Samsung without adding new packet sniffing technology that would have to work at layer 4, I reckon, when the box itself is just a layer 2 transparent bridge. The box doesn't even know what IP address you have let alone what ports you're transmitting on.

If we did any P2P affecting stuff it would be done further up the network, not in every single CPE. Samsungs are a tiny percentage of our installed broadband CPE base, so why on earth would we expend time and effort adding something just to those? There's something brown and smelly flying around this thread.

eMule, in my experience is about the flakiest P2P app out there, you can be downloading at 25-30 Kbytes/s one minute and then get nothing for days. I use Apollon these days on the rare occasions I need that *special* file...

Not an NTL ee, but realistically all that is in there is a DOCSYS CM, no modem performs packet sniffing / routing, thats the job of the router. The first point on the NTL network that they are likely to be able to filter packets is the UBR. Being as the Pace allowed this and the Samsung causes problems the UBR does not have packet filtering in place.

It is probably the Samsung box being badly installed, not having the signal levels to the box checked or some other problem with provisioning or CM setup on it restricting the ACK packets and causing problems. The US bandwidth has not increased following the speed upgrades, so although you can recieve 50% more data, you still have the same bandwidth to acknowldge these packets.

I should imagine it would actually be harder to update/alter any p2p affecting measures being done by the STB. It would be easier to manage further up the network (fewer machines to update).

I counted four users posting on that thread (which is hardly a representative sample itself), and the only one claiming packet sniffing was you.

BBKing is in a position to know what it installed in the boxes (after all, he does roll out the uprades), and I think Bill C is also in a position to know. They both say that the Samsungs do not do this.

TBH, I would believe BBKing. The number of Samsung boxes is a small fraction of the number of Pace boxes, so just blocking p2p on the Samsung boxes would make little difference to the netowkr.

If NTL wanted to introduce P2P blocking technology, it would be far quicker, cheaper and easier to introduce it further up the network, maybe at the UBR level. That way, they would only have to upgrade a few hundred UBRs rather than a million or so STBs (don't know exact figures).

I think that you have possibly been fed bull by the Technician.

An excellent point well made, although it some anti-worm stuff is done on the boxes themselves, this isn't Samsung specific (that would be pointless) and shouldn't affect P2P, as Bill suggests.

Maybe that's what the technician meant? Admittedly, NTL were quite public about doing that.

I think its a bit harsh to not allow links to other forums, this is the first public forum I have seen such a rule but I am not a mod so who am I to argue.

Back to the topic it wouldnt surprise me if the hardware had the technology but I dont think it would be to block p2p ntl know the consequences of such an action and I dont think its worth the hassle and like bbking said if they wanted to do it they could do it at a more central point higher up in their network. If its an issue just do away with the STB and get a cable modem they better anyway.

Quite frankly, this must be a contender for one the most ill informed statements of the year. Samsung boxes cannot sniff packets any more than I can, and if ntl wanted to block P2P this would not be their chosen method. In fact, I know from inside knowledge of certain plans (which sadly I cannot make public) that ntl's attitude to P2P is a long way from actively blocking it.

It seems clear from subsequent posts that you have nothing to base this on other than a supposed conversation with "someone at tech support", and your posts and actions (both here and on another site) cause the word "troll" to spring to mind.

I take back my comment about the censoring of the link been harsh seeing it from another view point I understand that he was misinforming people and could have caused extra confusion. I apologise for my comment.

1st 128K took 703 ms = 186447 Bytes/sec = approx 1551 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 719 ms = 182298 Bytes/sec = approx 1517 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 703 ms = 186447 Bytes/sec = approx 1551 kbits/sec

I dont think it is all good! Sometimes when i do a test the first section will be 300 kbps then 1551 for the rest!!!
Like this:
Tue, 17 Aug 2004 17:43:47 GMT
1st 128K took 3438 ms = 38124 Bytes/sec = approx 317 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 703 ms = 186447 Bytes/sec = approx 1551 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 719 ms = 182298 Bytes/sec = approx 1517 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 703 ms = 186447 Bytes/sec = approx 1551 kbits/sec
And when listening to radio thru winamp occasionally it will pause cost of the connection dropping for a second or two!

So when's the set top box swaps occuring in the North West? Had a letter off NTL 6? weeks ago and no contact since? Read previously that the upgrade was due in Sept? which doesn't leave much time.

Anyone from NTL in the North West (BillC?) care to comment please?

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

hmm, our area is upgraded and we've still got the pace box on 1mb :(
no letter at all saying we were getting extra speed.

We had the pace box originally for the broadband, then we got a modem installed and ntl proceeded to rape our bank for £65 without ANY warning (even by the main email account for the sacm internet setup!), so we phoned them up and explained we were not pleased that they took the money in that way. NTL then said they would not change the billing for the modem (which had to go on a 2nd account btw... why? well, im not sure... same name, address and everything) so we could pay it in a paypoint or with a payment card or something as they couldnt do that with new accounts (im sure that was utter BS tbh)

So we got the eng out to take the modem out (who actually took the modem but left the power plug and coax cable in place all plugged in (nice and safe tbh init?), looked at the router, grunted and left. I came home from work and set it all back up myself (understandable I assume... routers arent supported i guess would be the reason).

So... back on pace box but wanting a samsung box for our extra speed which had the visiting eng contemplated it, he could have saved a job of re-visiting and installing ANOTHER box which we're gonna phone them for tomorrow.

so err yeah... thanks ntl :/

YES! Upgraded finally here in SG4 as well. Got done at 2am yesterday and auto-rebooted apparently, cable modem's been up for 22 hours according to Docsdiag and on the new 750000bps :)

Very pleased, cheers for finally getting round to us, NTL.

EXCELENT !
just been upgraded, various speed tests put me at about 720/730 Kb/s. which isnt to bad at all. i just re-booted the modem this afternoon and it had been done. My dad thinks that 300K is fast enough though so he gonna put us down to that (from 750) to save money :( £7 fuxing a month, not worth it IMO. im gonna try talk him out of it ;).

thanks to NTL for making this happen so quickly, and so far, very smoothly.

Still not on 750k but postcode checker says I should be :( Its a SACM and Ive tried rebooting same prob.

Edit: Having said that Robin Walkers test gave me the following

Quote:

1st 128K took 1687 ms = 77695 Bytes/sec = approx 646 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1563 ms = 83859 Bytes/sec = approx 698 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1640 ms = 79922 Bytes/sec = approx 665 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1640 ms = 79922 Bytes/sec = approx 665 kbits/sec
But Dan Elwell's test says its downloading at 580k
And CNET bandwidth meter says 580k also

It means people on a lower tier and those with SACM's have had thier speed increased 1Mb STB users still have t wait for the switch on.

Nope. NTL won't be upgrading the 1Mb STB users to 1.5Mb untill all the 1Mb users have had their Pace boxes replaced.

No idea when this will happen though.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

There's definately something amiss with the samsungs - I've had an engineer out this morning, who's swapped the box for another samsung, and I still get the same rate of packet loss when up/downloading / P2P. I've switched the BB back to the pace and all is fine again.

I've now arranged for a SACM to be installed - I've just got to wait till 1st September for it to be installed.

Do netstat -s and put the results here, from under the IPv4 section. Those readings I took above are from when I had Azureus / eMule open.

What sites are you guys using to check? I'm in swindon - doesnt seem any quicker yet :( SN3 Post code, like other guys in here, should be moving to 1.5MB.

Not upgraded yet in Cardiff North. My friends / family in other areas of Cardiff have been upgraded already. :(

Yes, but it doesn't help. My area shows as not being upgraded until September on the postcode checker, must be some sort of difference.

Re: [Merged] BB Speed Upgrades

I rebooted my cable modem a couple of weeks ago to see if the area had been upgraded and my connection speed went up to 1.5Mb. Downloading some files tonight I noticed that the connection speed had dropped back down to 1Mb, getting around 125K/s download in Getright and this is confirmed with the other speed tests I have done. Using the NTL postcode checker I`m supposed to not be getting upgraded until September.

I`m in the RG2 area of Reading, is this another area where NTL accidentally released the revised CM config ahead of time?

*Edit* Can`t drop from 1.5Mb to 1.5Mb, d'oh
