Good game at OT today, hanging on a bit at the end . Can't understand why Rooney got a straight red though. His tackle was a cynical 'professional'foul which TBH I would always like to see punished with a straight red but what is the criteria if there is one. It was the first foul that he had committed, it wasn't two footed or in any way dangerous, he was deep in his own half so not denying a goal scoring opportunity. Only ten, fifteen minutes later a Hammers player committed an absolutely identical foul and only got a yellow. Makes me think that if it had been anyone but Rooney the ref wouldn't have been as quick to show the red, he fired it up in an instant without thinking about it for a second.

Yes, refs are a lot quicker to give decisions against United at OT now SAF can't touch them although I can't have many complaints after seeing Rooney's challenge again a few times.

Still it's not all bad news, chances are it'll give Mata a good run out and the chance to show why he ought to play more. Either that or a good window dressing exercise for January.

Martin Oliver, l believe ruined an excellent North London derby. Why give the Spurs player a yellow card for putting his hand up to his ear.

I feel that referee's want to make a name for themselves. Too many bookings, too much whistle ruined a brilliant derby.

The two challenges were very different, Rooney kicked Downing up by his knee and was clearly a proffesional foul whereas the West Ham player accidently caught Rafael. It was a deserved red card but you see a lot of similar offences given yellow cards every week, again its inconsistencies with referees.

If the West Ham players foul was as you say 'accidental ' then why did he get even a yellow cards?

Just watched both fouls again and although the West Ham foul wasn't as crude as Rooney's it was a deliberate ankle tap IMHO.

Agreed on the yellow. If he then made a yellow card challenge it would be a bit ridiculous to be sent off. Same applies to goal scoring celebration bookings. I dread to imagine a player being booked twice for that. Please do post if there's been such a case?
