Looks like the ITV Encore deal will keep the channel away from Virgin Media until at least December 2015. This is disappointing, as we will now miss the first six months of original programming on this channel.

Hopefully, VM will not waste a second in bringing this channel to us, with all the programmes we've missed being added to 'On Demand'.

ITV launches pay channel ITV Encore

ITV’s next drama hit could air first on pay-TV after the Downton Abbey broadcaster today launched a new channel dedicated to drama, called ITV Encore, that will air only on Sky.

ITV Encore will show a mix of recent hits such as Vera and Lucan alongside some “original commissions” with “big-name lead actors and compelling narratives penned by some of the UK’s best writers”.

New series of existing major shows such as Downton and Mr Selfridge will not debut on ITV Encore, but the broadcaster hopes it can nurture future hits on the pay channel.

It is part of a wider four-year partnership with Sky as ITV, Britain’s biggest free-to-air commercial broadcaster, expands in pay-TV in the hunt for more “non-advertising” revenue.

ITV shows will also be made available more widely on Sky’s mobile and online services and as “box sets” that can be bought at the virtual Sky Store.

Analysts at Liberum Capital said ITV was “becoming cleverer about monetising its content” and should see “substantial upside from the old deal” with Sky, which covered just the high-definition versions of ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4.

It is understood ITV Encore will air exclusively on Sky for at least 18 months, as the pay-TV giant seeks exclusive content in its battle with resurgent BT.

Those close to ITV insisted it continued to have a strong relationship with BT and Virgin Media.

ITV are basically just trying to copy the success of Sky Atlantic in launching ITV Encore and again like Sky Atlantic they are trying to make it exclusive to a select group and thus deny many viewers a chance of seeing it.

I think that I will be able to survive without ITV Encore, judging by the fact that I watch precisely zero things on ITV, as I have an IQ of higher than double-digits and, in addition, I cannot bear all of their interminable commercial breaks. Thank God for Tivo, making whizzing through such things an absolute joy.

However, for some reason, things like Downton Abbey appear to be inexplicably popular.

Downton Abbey is genius in my view. I know some don't like it but many of us do... As watch it when it is first on I too can cope without Encore.

Can Encore allow ITV to broaden its drama palette?
Quote:

Speaking at the recent Media Summit, Adam Crozier explained his aspirations for ITV’s new pay-TV channel, ITV Encore. The new channel will, said Crozier, allow ITV to commission “particular niches” of drama – along the lines of US imports such as Game of Thrones or AMC’s Mad Men – which might not attract “huge audiences”, but which are “terrifically high quality”.
Quote:

The launch of ITV Encore was announced in January, as part of a new four-year deal between ITV and BSkyB. A well-placed source estimates the overall deal – which includes greater availability for ITV programmes on Sky’s video-on-demand services, including Now TV – to be worth “tens of millions of pounds” in revenue to ITV. BSkyB and ITV both decline to comment on the commercial terms, but it is highly likely that Sky has insisted on a certain level of original content for ITV Encore – and that, in return, it is paying a subscription fee for every home receiving it as part of its basic channels package.

I think ITV have `over valued` their new `darling` ITV Encore in thinking it will be more successful by doing an exclusive deal with sky. I like many can live without it as with sky Atlantic. If we eventually get these channels in the future great but until then there`s more than enough brilliant drama on Fox,Alibi,Watch etc to keep me entertained.

That date is before August 1st.

All I can say right now it will not happen until after the World Cup final.
