Seen more articles on this since the above.
Apparently its going to use streaming behind the scenes, so will require a working (decent) internet connection to the box, and it will not work on older sky boxes (I assume that means Sky+HD). It will also be available on Virgin.

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

I'd imagine since most games won't have a standalone presenter/panel etc. they'll simply have a programme that says "our main game is this go here to watch the rest". BEIN Sports for example in the middle east broadcast their games in this fashion.

I don't imagine there is an upper limit other than what it'd be impractical to put on a menu. F1 for example has feeds from all 20 drivers plus main feeds when you go 'interactive' on SkyQ.

If there's 36 games across the opening weekend I'd guess Sky will spread them somewhat - Friday evening, Saturday lunchtime, evening, 3 on Sunday etc. leaving a maximum of around 30 that could be played simultaneously. At a complete guess I'd imagine they'll bundle those further into groups.

Paul 14-05-2024 22:39

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

Its possible they will stagger some of them, but the articles also noted they could run up to 100 concurrent streams, so 36 in one go seems well within their capacity.

What I want to know is will it be any better than the current red button matches sky show? Red button matches now are irritating because if you blink you miss a goal and you get no action replay. Also,at half time you get a boring board telling back shortly! I hope they are better otherwise for me it's all pointless

Absolutely this.... If they are going to show games then they must do better than the single camera no replay shots

From https://www.cordbusters.co.uk/virgin...y-sports-plus/

Virgin Media and Sky confirmed to us that Virgin Media TV customers who subscribe to Sky Sports will have access to Sky Sports+ when it launches in August.

However, Virgin Media’s platforms will only offer live content, which means some of the on-demand Sports+ content may not be accessible.

Sky Sports+ will apparently be available on the Virgin Media 360 box and Virgin Media Stream.

It’s still unclear whether the service will be available on Virgin Media’s older boxes, and the company says more details will be released closer to the launch date.

They sent an email to customers yesterday confirming they are leaving Sky linear - although they have just added their app to SkyQ which now has around 15 channels in it.

I think it was March the last time a DAZN PPV was available on Sky linear even though they have still been events on other platforms.

Was on TNT Sports before but WBD seem to have little interest in sport other than Premiership rugby and Premier League football.

For the Olympics:
The Eurosport 4K channel is exclusive to VM media - not even on Sky.
The Eursport pop-up channels are only on VM and EEtv.
There is no UHD/HDR coverage for top tier subscribers to Discovery+.

That's a bit of a mess. WBD obviously wants top tier subscribers but for them to get the best Olympics coverage in the UK, WBD customers also need to subscribe to Virgin Media, a wholesaler allegedly wrangling with WBD over the cost of TNT Sports.
But VM customers can't get WBD's HBO shows unless they also subscribe to Now TV or Sky.

VM Customers get the Eurosport pop-ups anf the 4K channel in their EPG - none were added to Sky EPG.

SkyQ customers get Discovery+ - but there is no Olympics 4K coverage in there.

TNT/Eurosport is not what it could be for customers.

Understood. Setanta GB at least served a purpose by being the (distant) No. 2 sports provider after Sky Sports. DAZN UK doesn't seem to serve anyone's needs - the shareholders, the banks, the viewers and even the sports themselves. And once Amazon Prime ends its UK sports broadcasting, it's probably only fourth in the list of UK paid sports broadcasters and behind Premier Sports.

Although the contacts date back to 3 different companies...

HBO - WarnerMedia (until 31st December 2025)
Eurosport 4k - Discovery (renewal date unclear) arguably Warner Bros Discovery today
TNT Sports - last renewed when it was BT Sport

Technically the first show Sky acquired from Warner Bros Discovery was only this year (The Cleaning Lady) and they limited it to 31st December 2025 , WarnerMedia was previously selling shows to Sky with 4 year licensing agreements.

The way The Penguin has been sold separately to Sky and how it's airing on HBO on Thursday is odd and possibly a loophole in their HBO deal (was originally due to Premiere as Max Original)

Digital Spy is reporting that TNT Sports UK are set to bid for NFL's UK Media Rights.

Sky Sports current deal with NFL ends after this season in February 2025.

Den, it's early days but I fear from your first game that your team won't be making an appearance on the Beeb unless it's in a supporting role.

Quite depressing that all we have signed so far amounts to a blank piece of paper.

Any significant changes for football rights this year?

Other than the football league having more games on tv?

TNT and sky keep the same rights etc?

Sky Sports UHD is pixelating in Leicester for last couple of days.

Thought it was the high winds from the live test match.

Next season all the Sunday EPL matches will be shown so the sports+ screens are going to be busy.

Appreciate this will be true - but do we think Sky are also more likely to increase use of a 12 noon (or 6.30pm) kick off slot to reduce the number of background games?

Well that depends on how many matches are scheduled on a Sunday. However, its probably less than the opening weekend of the FL the other week when all CH, L1 & L2 matches were available, and of course the League Cup last week when the Tuesday evening had over 30 matches to pick from.

The season starts 5th September, for Thursday night football, so next week sometime I would guess.

I wouldn’t worry too much.

Despite the mythology around “deep pockets” streamers Sky are often hoovering up sports rights for less in real terms (indeed, sometimes even in pure cash terms) adjusted for inflation.

The EFL deal had a big headline figure but it was over five years. Production costs won’t be massive for anything they aren’t giving the showcase treatment to.

Paul 27-08-2024 21:56

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

All the sky sports+ matches have commentators, replays, and highlights at half time, so some extra production work is going into them.

A much better experience than the "red button" matches in previous years.

VirginMedia version will have alternate programming during the Sky black out.

hows this happening? where is premier sports 2 airing this? Ireland?

ozsat 26-09-2024 05:51

Re: ESPN, BT, Euro, Premier and Sky Sports news

So the main Premier Sports 2 carries live UEFA Champions League - but as they only have the rights for Ireland, the UK Sky cards get a 'out of region' message and a blue screen.
VirginMedia get a different feed which has the alternate UK programming - so no error message and no UEFA football.
Premier Sports 1 has two versions on Sky -one for UK and a second for Ireland so can split the programmes. But there is only one Premier Sports 2 on satellite.

VirginMedia used to do this too for the LaLiga live football at 3.15pm on a Saturday - hit by the 3pm blackout.
Sky would have a 'region message' message on screen while th VM version had alternamte programming.

Warner Bros. Discovery will become the exclusive UK broadcaster for the men’s and women’s Tour de France from 2026.

Currently, the pay-TV provider shares the cycling competition with ITV, which shows live races and highlights on ITV4. From 2026, cycling fans will have to subscribe to the then launched Max streaming service or Eurosport to watch the races live, and the agreement will last until at least 2030.

It’s a shame that ITV won’t carry live coverage of the TdF. But reading the wording in that statement, hopefully a deal will be done for them to show highlights every evening. Unless WBD intends to put them on Quest.

The agreement, worth a reported €1 billion, will see all 63 matches at the tournament, which involves 32 of the best clubs worldwide, live-streamed, free to view on DAZN worldwide, with the possibility of sublicensing to local free-to-air linear broadcast networks.

WWE Network is closing 31st December and is moving to Netflix so will be available on Virgin Media from January.

Unfortunately it looks like not much content is going over. From what I've heard so far only:

1) RAW
2) SmackDown
3) NXT
4) Selected PPVs. (apparently 40 ppvs from the past. Considering WWE have had PPVs for over 40 years and for the last 25 years had at least 12 ppvs a year this isnt much!)
5) Selected documentaries
6) A few bits of classic content (which will be added and removed periodically)

There will not be any WCW Nitro, WCW Thunder, WCW PPVs, ECW Hardcore TV, ECW PPVs or any former WWE shows such as Superstars or territories. Netflix are just focused on showing content for WWE.

Such a shame! Literally going backwards where content will be hidden away again. The Youtube WWE Vault will be posting the odd classic match or dark match but just segments and not full shows or PPVs.

End of an era!
