My modem speeds have been updated, so it must just be pretty busy in my area...I hope.

This from another thread from someone in Manchester:

I have looked into your situation in more depth and I can see that there are some network issues in your area. These would cause the problems that you have been facing, (dropped connections, slow browsing and downloads). At the moment there is work scheduled to take place on 06/07/2006 to resolve this issue.

ntl is committed to provide all it's customers with the highest quality service possible. I am sorry that you have not received the service you have been expecting of late. Once the work has been completed, you should no longer experience the degraded service.

I hope this answers your questions.

Thank you for contacting ntl

So hopefully in the next couple of weeks, things should improve.

I just took Zone Alarm off and rebooted. Before I was getting 2.1 to 2.4Mps download. I'm now getting 3.0Mps. It's a start....

My downloads were poor as well until i removed zonealarm ,averaged 2.5 Mbps, cleaned the registry as well just to be sure.I tested the download speed by grabbing service pack 2 from windows, using reget download manager it was coming down full whack, very pleased.

Iââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢m curious to know if anyone here is using ZoneAlarm Pro and incurring the same problem, or is it just the free version?

you only need Zone alarm if you dont already have a firewall.

If you have a router then zone alarm is next to useless as your already NAT'd which means all internet traffic will be going to the router, not you.

If you use windows firewall in my professional opinion its more than enough and actually performs better than Zonealarm.

Done be over protective, itll just harm you.

Windows Firewall and a NAT router offer inbound protection only. They do not protect against rogue applications making a connection outbound. ZoneAlarm does.

Unfortunatley ZA can be a little overprotective, though I cant speak for the newer versions thats the reason I stopped using it.

That is not quite true since SP2. Windows Firewall will ask whether some packages which need to make outgoing connections should be granted permission (like Zone Alarm). The difference is that Windows seems to implicitly trust a lot of MS applications (so it doesn't ask you about them) and some other applications too. I am not sure of the rules that apply but it would not surprise me if someone writing nasty code could not con the firewall into trusting it though.

Having said that if you have decent AV software you stand little risk of catching something that will try to transmit out, so an extra firewall is really overkill.

Re: Speed Increases 1st June - 2meg to 4meg

Hello,

I'm in peterborough with a NTL120 modem and was getting 2.4mbs down and 379kbs up (up was fine but down wasn't). I turned off the Zonealarms firewall due to reading comments about the firewall interfering and was still getting 2.4mbs. Talked to NTL thro broadband medic and called CS. After 50 minutes of talking and testing the connection i was told to wait till after 30th june when the network upgrades are finished then ring back if the speed is still slow.

Anyway, after reading the last couple of pages i uninstalled ZA and now i'm getting 3.81mbs on a NTL120!!!!!!

Thanks to all the peeps for posting about the uninstall of ZA, simply turning off ZA didn't work for me.

Well it's never asked me for permission on anything, ZA included.
The same goes for the firewall on my XP Pro machine at work.

Windows XP Firewall completely fails the shields up test at grc.com - not good.

What ZA does do is stop MS WGA phoning home everyday. (Yes my copy of XP is legit, I just don't like the idea of MS calling home without permission or a damn good reason)

Anyway, ZA is not affecting my data throughput, so it'll be staying for now.

I do most things on my Mac anyway.

So you clicking "yes" to agree to the terms and conditions when you install it doesn't in your book count as "your permission" then?

Not that I agree with it, just saying is all :D
