....only a guess from me, but I assume once the Olympics is finished, VM will then launch the channels as they'll be several HD and SD slots available.

Can't see how these slots are always kept for live events

Which is the next major live event after the Rio Paralympics? Probably Wimbledon 2017 as I don't think Glastonbury has many feeds. By then, VM could have migrated everyone onto MHEG 4 boxes ensuring sufficient capacity for many more channels But the fact that we're starting to get more channel additions suggests that technology may not be the constraint that some feel it might be.

They won't need the spare capacity anymore for olympics because bbc won't be hosting them anymore as of 2018 winter olympic's Eurosport has the rights...

If only the BBC could lose the rights to Wimbledon as well and I'd be a happy man.

But the channels are already there. They are just hidden.

The launch date is entirely down to contractual agreements.

I didn't realise the channels were already there. I thought I read that there was a video stream for one or two channels, but that the rest were just listed in the channels table list.

But thanks for confirming that these channels do exist!:)

2016, 2018 and 2020 Games rights were acquired by BBC and it has sub-licensed them to Discovery.
BBC has subsequently sub-licensed the 2022 Winter Games and 2024 Summer Games from Discovery. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/35473371

Transport streams 22 & 23 are the ones generally used for these pop-up channels. The new channel placeholders are pointing at transport streams 2, 7, 8, 9 and 11, so won't have to wait for the BBC Olympics channels to end.

The Sky Sports Mix HD placeholder points at TSid 23 which is currently carrying BBC Olympics HD 4 to 8. I would think that 5 MPEG2 HD services on a single transport stream would be too many, so you probably right about that one.

The BBC's stated aim is to wind down broadcast red button channels over time and replace them with connected red button IPTV streams. So demand for temporary spare capacity should reduce over time.
