Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
The Terayon TJ210 can handle 10mbps, if your not getting the speeds its due to the network interface in your PC/Router, the college i used to go to had a TJ210 on a 38Mbit connection and it run perfectly at upto "37.8MBit" with a maximum upload of "5MBit"
These are tested figures (exact figures are in a coursework which is still being marked) anyway solong as the modem is hooked into a 10/100mbps network card/device (i.e. router firewall...) it will work fine. only people with an old 10mbps network card will recive a reduced speed when downloading |

To put the download thing in context, though - at the moment, a 3MB connection takes around 3 seconds to download 1 megaBYTE (connections are measured in megaBITS). With 10MB, less than a second will hook your 1MB, but this obviously depends on the speed of the server you're connected to. As a rule, commercial sites - Microsoft, Apple, Google, Yahoo etc are connected to mirrored servers, which makes them suitable for maxing out your connection. Personal sites and ones one smaller scales are usually only on one server, so you have to just hope that their ISP's are connected to big pipes. :D |

Browsing with ntl previously always seemed more problematic than when I had 512Kb ADSL, now it is brilliant. :tu::tu: |

Hum is seems I got my upgrade they let me have it but the speeds don't seem like it. He said it may take 24 Hours is this True.
Where can I get a speed checker. |

If you have an Ambit 120 / 100 you will not get full speed at this time. |

Well i wasnt quite honest with them but one lie deserves another. They plainly told me that my NTL HOME 100 modem would handle to 10meg speeds which it couldnt. SO in order to get my new modem i phoned TS and unplugged my CM and told them it wasnt working ( this was yesterday) and today i got a new one. And i'm downloading at an average of 1100 kb/s |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Who are people calling to get modems replaced so quickly, and more recent modems than I have? I've called broadband tech support numerous times asking for a new modem (currently a Surfboard 3100) but each time get through to what I assume is an Indian call centre reading me things from a crib sheet. Even the old line "I work in IT, I know what I'm talking about" get me nowhere and trying to explain to them that 1.2 megabits doesn't equal 1200 kilobytes (they tried to argue that 1.2 megabits was the speed I should be getting) is driving me around the bend.
It was really slow, getting 120kbytes/sec (a third of what I had before being upgraded) but my first call to BTS was to a nice english chap who re-added me to the system. That helped and am now getting about 4mb and 512k upload, but I'd rather ask for a modem now than wait for NTL to forget/ignore about giving me a new modem, I pester them for one then having no stock (me, a cynic? ;) ) (Sorry for the mini rant, but I feel like I'm getting nowhere with them, the English chap even said if it's still not behaving to call back, he'll put notes in my account to say needs a modem upgrade, but either he didn't or the other people ignored/didn't read them.) |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
There is a lot of difference between being the only modem connected to the CMTS / uBR and having to share that bandwidth with others, that's why in a lab a Terayon might be able to happily do 10Mbit+ however when having to filter out transmissions destined for other MAC addresses, having to handle small packets as well as large ones, etc, it's not really an option.
Can't remember if Terayons have a 100Mbit or 10Mbit ethernet port, however those getting close to the 10Mbit might want to check their ethernet settings, as the speeds described are approximately the maximum for a 10Mbit ethernet connection. |

Wow, CS are really being a nightmare at the moment.
I got my upgrade yesterday, first time calling too. (blog post) However, a mate of mine is trying to get hers, but after the 5th call is still getting absolutely nowhere. The lines from CS aren't even consistent. She's had.. It's a pilot. New Customers only. Not available in your area. You've already got it. and.. '10mb? Not something I've heard of.' Total nightmare. Anybody browsing the forum right now in CS that could possibly help her out? :) |
Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)
Hmmm perhaps I'm a whoooos (or too old) but I'm not going to lie about my Ambit 100 not working (it works fine ... up to 3M). I still have not established if the Ambit 100 can handle anything above 3M.... so .. anyone in the Reading area on a Ambit 100 who has upgraded to 10M and is seeing more than 3M ??
Tech support clearly told me today that I am not seeing more than 3M because the network will not support it in my area - and not because I have a Ambit 100 (although he did say that if my network was updated then I still would not get 10M until I change the modem - but I would get more than 3...).
