A great line in the Times yesterday (imho) -
"We are often told we have nothing to fear if we have nothing to hide - why do I have to prove I have nothing to hide?"

If you think you’re so innocent, prove it. That’s what “nothing to hide” is about: twisting the notion of innocent until proven guilty, meant to protect people from abuse of power, and instituting the notion of guilty until proven innocent, where anyone can be searched, anyone can be seized, and sometimes, even the trial can be dispensed with (and if you think that doesn't happy, think "extraordinary rendition"). It’s about getting people used to the idea of having to prove their innocence at every opportunity. After all, anybody who doesn’t want to prove their innocence must be guilty of something. ;)

It has already happened in this country. In Northern Ireland, courts were convened in secret and presided over by, in some cases, only one judge, no jury and in rare incidents without representation. This carried on for years, ending only relatively recently. The law still exists to allow this to be re-introduced.

Forever i understand what you and the others are saying about an oppressive regime misusuing the information but what i havn't heard is how if this regime comes to be ID card or no ID card were all screwed anyway so it isn't an argument for not having them really.

because at the moment if a far right group got control of say a council they wouldnt immediately have access to records recording where all those in an ethnic or religious group lived after this is in place they most certainly would would be one example

Re: ID Cards

Seven BBC Scotland TV presenters have been warned by NHS Fife that their computerised medical records may have been inappropriately accessed by a Doctor:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/...st/7763349.stm

i.e, the Doctor had the credentials to access the system. Credentials which he misused to snoop on the personal information of celebrities.

The human is always the weakest component in any secure system. Any number of people would have legal access to the ID database. Any one of them could be subject to bribery, blackmail or coercion, or simply turn out to be a sociopath. I simply do not want all of my personal information in one place, where one security breach could result in everything there is to know about my identity being released.

Yes i have got that point roger but as i keep saying how if those types of regime come in to being will having or not having an ID card prevent persecution it won't simple as that. All were talking about is the ease with which such information could be gathered and there are plenty of other ways just as easy to get that type of information. Also i see absolutely no reason why beyond a photo that would show skin colour that an ID card needs to contain original or ancesteral origin or type of religion and would oppose that sort of information being held on an ID card.

But you won't have that choice, will you?

i agree that not having an id card wouldnt make it impossible for them but it would at least make the have to work to get the info possibly giving us time to mount a defence

just look at what could have happen to a lot of bnp members with that instant access to thier info that happened recently if the public here or even goverment decided they were worth going after

as to the infomation i dont see why they should need that info but it will be there by default basicaly as they intend to tie into the medical database too

and even with out that they would get that info on kids as part of the childrens data base they are trying to put together which if you get asked about in school includes questions on ethnicity and religion ( lol the police were trying to get them to include fingerprints and dna on that hopefully after today thats been binned )

so its not even a matter of that being in the future as such they are attempting to gather that data NOW !

Yes well this government now seems to follow it's leaders example in the control freak vein and thats why i and many others have no faith in this government and never will have too much interfering where they don't need to and not enough eye on the ball preventing things that governments are meant to.
