Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

OK, I was under the impression that the 3COM CMX would not support 10Mb.
I thought I even remembered the box in it stating it only supports up to 3Mb.
Yet after ringing CS to get 10Mb upgrade:

Fri, 02 Dec 2005 16:36:47 GMT
1st 128K took 120 ms = 1092267 Bytes/sec = approx 9088 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 110 ms = 1191564 Bytes/sec = approx 9914 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 131 ms = 1000550 Bytes/sec = approx 8325 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 120 ms = 1092267 Bytes/sec = approx 9088 kbits/sec

Whats the word on the 3COM CMX then? Anyone else got one with the upgrade?

Cheers all.

I was told (by executive response team person) that they will be trying a firmware upgrade for the 3100 but they couldnt predict when. He has invited me to call again in about a week to let him know whats happened.
He also suggested that rebooting the modem every couple of days which i am doing.
Dont buy a new modem because if they find the 3100 wont manage the full speed then they will replace.
We just have to be patient for a bit longer.

Nice little .php file, i found:

http://www.ntlworld.com/microsites/10/popunder.php

also, for those who still question whether this is the 10meg :duh: the css file for the page is called tenmb.css

//removes deerstalker and extinguishes pipe.

Thanks for that! i will wait and see what happens. i have been looking about on the net and i have seen some firmware updates for my modem but none match my serial number and version. i have spoken to my neighbour and he is now on 10mb running at ful speed, he has one of ntl's new modems, ambit or somehting. thanks again

So there your answer guys.

No one is questioning if the 100's can do 10meg... even my old Ammy 100 done 10meg, they are just proving to be very unstable and like to reboot when under heavy load like when using Bit Torrent for example.

I would suggest trying to download something juicy like a Linux iso or something of BT to be sure your 100 does not suffer from the reboot problem.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems when going through a router?

Well, it would seem, after reading this thread http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=38424 that my 3 year old netgear RP614 only has a 10mb half duplex WAN port, hence the degraded speed when going through it. Looks like Santa's going to have to get me a new full duplex one.

Well you just need to look at the logistics of it, a ubr has a capacity of under 40mbit so its now taking less user's to saturate the downstream, which equates to higher contention. It has never been denied by any staff and one member of staff has sort of admitted it is increased. Its more or less the same situation with ipstream adsl, bt were undercutting the contention for years with 512kbit and it was nowhere near the advertised 50:1 ratio, now people have 2mbit they are seeing contention, and they can expect nearer 50:1 when 8mbit maxdsl is reached. With higher speeds at the same price its too expensive to maintain the same ratio's.

We are still waiting for NTL to announce what is happening with the Samsungs. Some people say they will handle 10MB, but NTL have not yet wriiten the necessary config file. Others say they will only handle 7-8 MB and NTL will provide a stand-alone cable modem to Samsung users. If you keep an eye on the NTL web site, they should be clarifying this on Monday (5th) when the 10MB service is 'officially' launched.

This might be sooner than we thought, I have a Samsung STB, last night my router returned the following between 3am and 6am.

I had a bittorrent session running, but this is the first time I've cleared above 2.4 Meg. Strangely a speed test shows I am still on 3Meg, perhaps they were testing?

Fingers crossed anyway.

Hi Johnnygal,

I have MRTG running on my linux box although there is a windows version also available, it gets SNMP information from my DD-WRT and plots these graphs for me.

shame i can't use it too since ntl disabled client side snmp on the cablemodem.

I am on the 10meg service in the belfast area and my ambit 120 modem keeps disconnecting about every minute or so and i have to keep restarting the modem. It would fine then all of a sudden the only lights on themodem that are on are the ENET, SYNC, RDY and PWR. The D/S light keeps flashing on and off too and there will be no network activity running through the modem. Does anyone have any idea of what I am doing wrong?

I was going to do a seperate thread on this to get more viewers but it would be merged so here it is.

Saturday 3rd oct (1st sat after auto upgrades)
.uk 100mbit 198kB/sec
.nl 10mbit 48kB/sec
.de 100mbit 56kB/sec
ntl speed test 7.91mbps
adslguide speedtest
Results from broadband speed test recorded on Saturday, 03 December 2005, 16:18.

Your Connection
Direction
Actual Speed
True Speed (estimated)

Downstream 1823 Kbps (227.9 KB/sec) 1968 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 476 Kbps (59.5 KB/sec) 514 Kbps (inc. overheads)
http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/sp...720caa1d4b4c4e

So there is some proof of real peering problems for ntl, I am getting no response of them if they plan to upgrade their external peering to 8x their previous size to match the speed upgrades. Notice the ntl speedtest gave me almost 8mbit but any traffic leaving their network is drasticaly lower. Just finished a discussion on irc and most ntl peeps are unhappy their speeds are lower then before the upgrade noone managing above 3mbit.

If you were on 3mb you should be getting it very soon, or might even have it. You don't need any new firmware, try restarting your modem

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Hi there.

I currently use a surfboard SB3100 cable modem, I had this when I first became an NTL customer about 5 years ago when the very first 512kbps broadband service was released. I have been on the 3meg service since it started and was pleased to hear that 10meg would soon be available. I thought I would re-boot my modem and see what speeds I was going to get in the hope that my area had been upgraded. My max download rate from Microsoftâ₠¬â„¢s servers early in the mooring (when not many people are on the net) was maxing out at around 670kbps. I done a speed test and it was about the same, my upload was around 55kbps. I was a bit worried about this and thought that my modem was at fault. I have been looking for some firmware updates but none are available to date. It does appear that my modem will NOT support the full 10meg speed.
A friend of mine has just sold his house and is changing to a BT line, he has given me his old Motorola SB5100i cable modem. I was wondering if I could use this instead of my SB3100 and if NTL would register the new modem? If not I will have to ring up CS and ask if they will do an upgrade modem for me.
The last time I rang CS I was put through to this guy who told me the SB 3100 would take the 10meg speed, he obviously does not really know the facts.
Any advice would be much appreciated on this one guys.
Steve

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Who knows? Certainly not anyone customer-facing at NTL, reading the posts on this board, as some people are getting modems because 'the Samsung does not support 10MB', and others are being told to wait, as the Samsung will 'definately' support 10MB, once things are upgraded. Hopefully we'll know more on Monday when the 10MB is officially launched for existimg 3MB customers.

My connection has dropped 3 times since the 10mbit upgrade with my NTL:Home 120 cable modem. Seems like after a day's usage, the modem will just black out.. cant contact it, or send data through it at all, yet it remains in sync? Tech support claimed the modem is fine with the service. not good :(

Yesterday however I got 1.15mb/sec from creative over http, so clearly its variable depending which peer you go over and if http or not. Remember http downloads might well be of a proxy server so not external traffic.

I too have the same setup and F5D7230-4 ver 2, the box says "10mb wan" so I presume this is why I can not get any faster than 7mb, would appear the F5D7230-4 can not take the 10mb :(

Yesterday however I got 1.15mb/sec from creative over http, so clearly its variable depending which peer you go over and if http or not. Remember http downloads might well be of a proxy server so not external traffic.

A perfectly legal 15 Mibibytes it is I'm sure ;)

Something you have to understand.... some companies when it comes to peering etc, just get on with it, get it done and plan for the future. Others have departments that faff around with it all, juggling it between their various other responsibilities, and there's no front line access (the alledgedly engineers on both sides have no influence over peering at all, they only get to implement what they are told - nice to see with those salaries comes responsibility I don't think).

Much smaller ISPs than ntl have more people dealing with peering. I could if requested set up a public peering session in a very short while, and have a couple of times harrassed certain other companies over peering interfaces getting towards congestion because congesting external links upsets customers on an even bigger scale than congesting internal or local ones.

So it wouldn't surprise me if some links were still overpopulated, simply because no-one bothered to plan to upgrade them until they were nearly maxed, and because the upgrading was slightly more time consuming than expected or growth of traffic a bit quicker so the pipes are congested.

Just talking from prior experience with certain companies.

In short I don't know what the issues are, however I find the idea of peering being congested fairly easy to swallow as transit is much more looked after than PIs. Really if a PI is congested or public peering it should be shut down immediately to avoid service affect, however doing that instead of transit costs money, which makes you wonder why ntl's *public* peering policy was at least until fairly recently so completely anal / holier than thou.

But yeah pretty much a lot of the belayed upgrade are probably due to bureaucracy, procrastination and over complication, 3 things ntl historically do well to make sure that the people who are best at these things can keep their jobs. Sorry if this affects your service, but *shrug*

Well my speeds are all oevr the shop - my guess is saturated UBRs or something. Most of the time I was actually getting downloads faster from my 2mbit which is a bit cheaper :)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

After posting my other thread there, I got on the phone to Tech Support as my Speeds were amazing Slow even from Uk Mirror Service & a download manager to boost the number of connections. Now there is Database Maint going on (as the recorded message says) which means they are a bit more limited to what they can do.

I explained that when I rang last time the Lady swapped over my channel and all that night I was hitting 900K - 1.2MB/Sec. The next night as I told him I was back to 30K - 5mbit in speeds all depending on what time of day it was. If it was just downloads I could have overlooked this until they sorted it all out maybe but Gaming was a write off in terms of Lag and Disconnections even if the servers were UK based. My point to him was that I was told even with the UBR fully Saturated - I should get no lower then 2mbit but this is def not the case.

He got me do download Spybot, I explained to him that the machine I am testing on has a FRESH Installed of XP SP2 plus not been on the web as such (the wonders of a Ghost Image). The download speed of the program was between 50KB?Sec and 141KB/Sec - not quite your 10mbit then. Remembering also I have SB4100 with New Firmware and a Router that has 100Mbit port (Linksys). I also explained that the speeds can get a lot faster if I stay up till 3am but I dont plan to do this anytime soon. I ran said Spybot and suprise, found nothing.

He assured me the UBR was not in a flooded state and disgregearded all the Errors present on the Modem with Sync Lost, DHCP Server Unavaialble and many others. The best he could come up with was "It is still a trail and by End of Jan 2006 it *might* get better".

Now some questions:

1. Is this a trail or not? If people are been Auto Upgraded and customers can jump to 10mbit via Web page etc - then surely it is not a trail any longer?

2. How long do we expect the speeds to jump all over the place and be SLOWER then the 2mbit service which I used ot be on? I do not expect 10mbit ALL the time btw - far from it but 30K - 104KB/Sec is a bit off do we agree?

3. How come some people get a consatnt 10mbit speed on downloads? Does the system not share all the bandwidth equally.

4. Ref point 3 - How much Bandwidth Does each UBR have on D/L and U/L and roughly how many people share one UBR?

Thanks :)

Questions like that are the precise issue with having three threads, the last in excess of 1000 posts, discussing one issue - to get the salient points out of the chatter, takes too long for people to bother leading to a question that's simple and could have been found out independently.

I don't blame anyone for asking though.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Give it time folks its 5th December all day...

Anyway ntl have issued us a press release:-

“ntl, the UK’s leading provider of consumer broadband services today launches a new super-fast broadband service that revs up to 10Mbps. At this high speed, customers can download a chart-topping MP3 or movie trailer in just four seconds. The new service also includes a sophisticated PC security package and a premium broadband content line up – at no extra cost.

ntl’s 10Mb service will transform the way the web is used by slashing the time it takes to download web pages, music, photos or stream videos. The service is ideal for watching the latest music video, playing an Xbox 360 game, download and streaming services such as Google Earth, or simply Christmas shopping online at super fast speed.
New service features premium broadband content in four categories – Music, Kids, Photos and Games – included at no cost, worth £30 per month if bought separately.

With more speed, users spend more time online. The free premium content is provided in four categories: music, games, digital photos and kids. It has been designed to provide easy access to the best of the net. For instance, customers get exclusive live gigs and interviews from MTV, 15 free photo prints every month and online storage from Photobox, 10 free tracks to download per month from Sonic Selector and access to hundreds of games such as LEGO Racers and Crazy Golf. There’s a simple registration process via ntlworld.com.

Security is a primary concern for internet users and ntl’s new 10Mb service offers sophisticated protection with anti-virus, pop-up blocker, privacy manager and secure form filler technology. The security pack will protect up to 3 PCs from 140,000 different viruses, with updates every three hours. This is also provided at no extra cost.
Customers will also receive an increased usage allowance of 75GB (up from 30GB) so users can do more of what they enjoy online. For the typical household that allows:-
 • Web surfing 24 hours a day
 • 8 hours of online gaming every day
 • 1,000 MP3 downloads a week
 • 60 hours of video streaming each week (up from 6 hours with 30Gb allowances)
 • Sending and receiving 2,000 email messages with attachments such as digital photos (10,000 messages without attachments)
New and existing 3Mb Broadband customers are the first to experience the power of 10Mb. Existing customers will be upgraded automatically today, although some may require a hardware upgrade to receive the full 10Mbps. Upload speeds are also increased to 512K (from 300K).

Despite the significant speed increase, bigger usage allowance, security pack and premium entertainment bundle, there is no change to the monthly subscription. In fact, in early 2006, existing 3Mb customers will also see a price cut from £37.99 to £34.99 per month.
As the “connected home” becomes a reality, with multiple in-home internet services running simultaneously, high speed broadband services are vital.

Bill Goodland, Director of Internet at ntl says: “Our 10Mb broadband service is the key to the connected home. If you enjoy online gaming, music and entertainment then this is the service for you. With the 10Mb service users can make the most of what the internet has to offer, from Christmas shopping online to streaming music. We believe this is Britain’s best broadband service.”

In 2006 ntl will launch additional 10Mb and unlimited broadband services at a range of different price points to match individual needs. The company will also add to its security and content offerings.

ntl Consumer is the UK’s largest residential broadband provider. It has led the market since 2000. As at 30 September, the company had 1.72m broadband customers (next largest is BT with 1.625m). In the previous three months the number of homes with broadband grew by 767,000 taking the UK residential market to 7.9m households.”

Richy99 05-12-2005 09:07

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

doubt they will offer 10meg at unlimited problem being that people would download TB of data in a month, unlimited connection is proably going to be 1 or 2meg maybe 3 but who knows for sure yet

Which cable modems support the full power of 10Mb?

All new Cable Modems that are installed have the capability to supply 10Mb Broadband, but there are other conditions as outlined in these FAQs which may affect the speed.
A very small number of our older modems are capable of supporting download speeds up to 5.5Mb. Go to www.ntlworld.com/upgrade to find out more information. If you wish we will visit your home to upgrade your modem so that you can benefit from the full power of ntl 10Mb Broadband (subject to £50 upgrade charge).

It gets even better.

http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservices/forms/upgrade/

NTL do not even admit that the Terayon modem is not capable of the full 10Mbit service!

Given that those with these older modems are long term customers who have been paying NTL money for probably 4 or more years, it seems madness to try to charge them when the equipment that NTL rents to them is no longer capable of providing the service.

NTL do say elsewhere that if equipment needs replacing then NTL will do so, and in this case it does need replacing, or we should only be paying 8/10ths of the price when the terayon maxes out at 8Mbit

Faster ? - only if you live close enough to the exchange, and the exchange actually provides ADSL2 in the first place.

Cheaper ? - Possibly per month, but then you need to pay for a BT line, and installation.

more organised ? - not necessarily - check out the hell sites for most adsl providers.

I would advise people to think very carefully before spitting their dummies out - the grass is not always greener ...... ;)

Well I sort of guess that ntl will probably prioritise links where common site's go over such as microsoft and indeed creative, I dont know of many major websites hosted in europe. The 15meg is legal by the way, I always rar my backups into 15meg segments now something I got used to doing.

I think the gist of what you saying is the engineer's involved know about it but are powerless as any fixes/upgrades etc. need approving from the top first.

£50 for something others get for nothing.
Its not our fault NTL gave us broadband through the set top box.

Not exactly a free upgrade is it ?
I was told on the phone several times that the upgrade would be free.

I guess they want all the STB users to cancel, what about those STB users who got a FREE modem replacement when they rang asking to have 10 meg, I guess the rest of us are secnd class citizens.

Really ****ed off now, way to go NTL

more organised ? - not necessarily - check out the hell sites for most adsl providers.

I would advise people to think very carefully before spitting their dummies out - the grass is not always greener ...... ;)

Ive seen this quated time and time again.

ok just to see how cheeper ntl is takin in mind ive got BB with ntl and phone with bt.

now the ? How much would it cost me to have the same service of 10 meg BB and phone with NTL each month...... not a very big saving when you look at this http://www.home.ntl.com/page/telephoneinfocompare for the phone and with cheaper ADSL2 out there you could save a mint in a year with bt and adsl2..

I been customer since April 2000 when I had to buy my own cablemodem (3Com CMX) for £150... .
