Remember Truss spend the whole summer going on about tax cuts. This is her agenda. She isn't just an idiot, she is a coward as well.

She just wants power. Everything else can be ditched.

Exactly. She will let her friend and book co-author Kwarteng take the blame for her policies which she got elected by Conservative Party members on.

No decency, the honourable thing is for her to resign.

Who will Liz Truss's new chancellor be?

From Steven Swinford of The Times.

I'm told it's NOT Sajid Javid and that Jeremy Hunt is currently out of the country

Otherwise it's currently a guessing game - Zahawi, Clarke and Barclay among names doing rounds but nothing certain yet

And would not calling for a no confidence vote get defeated as the Government will be trying to save its own skin.

Labour are pretty screwed here anyway, maybe they don't want to take over this mess.

They'll have to spend their entire government trying to fix the economy, the NHS and crime and they'll get kicked out of 5 years because it won't be possible to turn it around in that time. On the Spectator podcast they were talking of some MPs who probably would vote for a no-confidence vote so Labour has to deal with it.

A group of senior Conservatives have decided to call publicly on Liz Truss to resign following her sacking of Kwasi Kwarteng as chancellor.

The party grandees held their discussions and made their decision to act after reports emerged the prime minister was planning to sack her chancellor, which has since been confirmed.

The senior Tories are planning to speak out next week.

If that were the case she would have left Parliament and gone on to richer pursuits. The fact she remains on the backbenchers and promotes causes such as domestic violence suggests she does have a sense of public service.

What she believes is in the country's interest may not align with your idea of what that is, it didn't align with mine, but that doesn't mean she wasn't acting in bad faith.

LATEST: Guido Fawkes on Deputy PM call with Tory MPs, trying to calm waters.

Quote:

The Deputy PM Therese Coffey has just concluded a call with Tory MPs, which saw under one third of MPs bother to tune in. Guido’s mole reports that they left the call early as it was “just f***ing awful”, with loyalists continuing to blame the media and “comms” for the tanking poll ratings and market instability. She apparently kept referring to notes…

One MP said it was pointless denouncing the media for instability when it’s the Tory party causing the instability.

Johnny Mercer led the charge against the current situation, calling it “dire” and “unsurvivable”, and saying it’s pointless to pretend otherwise. Guido’s unimpressed red wall source called it all “delusional nonsense”, accusing the deputy PM of being “monotone, dull, and having nothing to say”. Another argues that Coffey sat there as DPM was the “personification of how it’s all gone wrong.” Will the Tories pause tearing each other apart over the weekend? Guido highly doubts it.

On page one of this thread you'll see that 11 letters went in on day one of her taking over, speaking of which, aren't there any rules giving her a specific period in office like there are when someone survives a leadership contest?

A year but I am guessing if the numbers are there the rules could be changed and the men in suits will appear.

Typical, bozos troubles started when he decided if he didn't like rules he'd change them, it's as if they've learnt nothing from him being forced out of office in disgrace

At the end of the day, the prime minister is the MP most likely to have the confidence of the House of Commons. Party leadership election rules are secondary.

This no time to call a General Election! Let the Tories hand the mantle of PM to Jacon Rees Mogg and ensure that they will be truly unelectable.:2cents:

Well at least we know the electorate can no longer dictate who their leader is. That after Boris pissed off the establishment and actually took us out of Europe, they got rid of him. But then when their choice of Rishi was dismissed by the membership by a candidate that promised tax cuts and a growth policy.

They decided they had to destroy that, and no we have Hunt, f**king Hunt. Remainer in chief, mr status quo, mr appointed.

Cue, capitulation over the N.I. Issue, cue, subordination to the EU.

Cue a Labour Government that has offered nothing.

**** it, I’m too old to give a shit.

With any luck my mortgage is paid by December, and I can weather the crap for a few years from any government of any colour, but U.K. politics is in the toilet because at least with Blair there was a vision, a belief, a destination.

Starmer offers nothing apart from being not Tory. (Which will be enough)

And there was me (and almost every one else) thinking it was because he lost the confidence of Tory MPs because he lied about knowing, then defended, then tried to change the rules, for someone who was a repeat sexual predator…

So, are you saying he didn’t lie about knowing, then defending, then trying to change the rules, for someone who was a repeat sexual predator, and was then kicked out by his own party’s MPs, or are you just trying to derail the conversation with ad hominem attacks?

I know that he was thought a liability by the party to whom he had won a massive majority, and was certainly hated by the Remain element of the Tories, but they’ve got their man in position now.

I made no ad hominem attack, I was just praising your self proclaimed mind reading prowess.

I love Miriam Margolyes :D
https://metro.co.uk/2022/10/15/fk-yo...adio-17569920/
Quote:

On Saturday morning’s BBC Radio 4, Harry Potter star Margolyes appeared on the show, where she aired her views on Hunt as her interview came to a close.

The actress confessed to hosts Justin Webb and Martha Kearney that she never thought she’d be ‘sitting in the seat’ where Hunt had been sitting.

The thing is, when I saw him there, I just said, “You’ve got a hell of a job, the best of luck.” Of course what I wanted to say was, “F**k you, you b*****d!” But you can’t say that,’ she then added.

The co-hosts scrambled to stop Margolyes from saying anything further that could cause ripples on the radio pre-watershed, as Webb laughed while stating: ‘Oh no no no you mustn’t say that. We’ll have to have you out of the studio now.’

If it’s any consolation Pierre, I don’t expect he will be in the job very long.

Watched Jeremy Hunt this morning on Sky news and lost count how many times he said difficult decisions, so I expect a complete change to the promise of no reduction in spending the Liz made a couple of days ago.

I expect the income tax cut to be 'postponed'.

I don’t think anyone will be. The only way out for the country is a General Election.

I hate the proposition but the government have proven themselves unfit to govern.

Radio 4 was better. But only for the contribution from Miriam Margolyes.

(Insert British exceptionalist trope about unwritten constitution, stability etc)

She's fine as long as she has the support of a majority of MPs.

But the problem is she’s obviously not in charge.

Whoever told her to sack Kwartang and then appoint Chunt*, is in charge. Because it sure as hell wasn’t her.

New chancellor Jeremy Hunt delays 1p income tax cut

All parts of Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget to be reviewed as economic outlook revealed as ‘far worse’ than first thought.

Jeremy Hunt is to delay a penny cut in income tax, the flagship announcement in the disastrous mini-budget, to help plug a black hole in the public finances that had reached £72 billion.

In the latest in a series of government U-turns, the new chancellor is expected to announce that plans to reduce the basic rate of income tax next April will be pushed back by a year.
Good - I would rather they raised the tax threshold, which would benefit the low-paid more.

Predicted by moi a few posts ago.

---------- Post added at 19:34 ---------- Previous post was at 19:30 ----------

At last the truth is out even from the Torygraph
Quote:

Project Fear was right all along
Six years of policy confusion and ineptitude has brought a calamitous loss of standing

Downbeat predictions by the Treasury and others on the economic consequences of leaving the EU, contemptuously dismissed at the time by Brexit campaigners as "Project Fear", have been on a long fuse, but they have turned out to be overwhelmingly correct, and if anything have underestimated both the calamitous loss of international standing and the scale of the damage that six years of policy confusion and ineptitude has imposed on the country.

A serious house price correction, substantially higher interest rates and a permanently impaired exchange rate may be the least of it.

Credibility is all in politics, finance and economics; this week was the point at which the UK Government finally managed to lose all last remaining vestiges of it. Britain's trusted institutional framework, together with its hard won reputation for sound money and certainty in policy, all went down the pan.

Perhaps I exaggerate, but not since the humiliation of the International Monetary Fund bailout in 1976 have we seen an unravelling quite as spectacular. This too from a Tory Government with a substantial overall majority. It is scarcely believable.

These are dark days for Tory MPs, who will be acutely aware that loss of reputation for economic competence is electoral poison for their party. As the former Chancellor, Philip Hammond, has already observed, that reputation has been comprehensively trashed by what's just occurred.

Sounds like more tax is expected now, a complete reversal.

Speaking in his first interviews since replacing Kwasi Kwarteng, Jeremy Hunt said some taxes will go up, while government spending may need to fall.
