Performing tests, so should know soon. Also set up tests for end of the days programmes, where it should change from HD to SD.

I'm not trying to state it as fact, just raising the question of whether it might be the cause of the recording issue.

It is more complicated than switching from SD to HD, which would be the situation for the start of scheduled broadcasts, changes in the other direction aren't too important. SDT linkage switches to a completely different service going in and out off-air periods, so should adapt to the parameters of that service. It is more complicated though because recordings, on both Freeview and Virgin use identifiers specific to recording and that could be an weak point with potential problems. Your experiment will be interesting but this switching has been ongoing for years with no reported problems.

Not the same mechanism but, when Virgin removes channels, if a user is already "tuned in" they can sometimes continue to watch after the channel is hidden from the EPG. Info may even show that the channel then has a completely different channel number, which is not in the normal EPG range.

I wonder if the recent problems were not related to normal switching. Did the same problem happen with viewers watching live? If there is a problem, no doubt it will be repeated.

Yes, loads of soundrops on BBC1 HD West Midlands. Been happening for about five days now. Only on 101 all other channels are fine.

The original question was about a problem with recordings of BBC3/4.
I did 3 test recordings. They all had problems with the SD part. They skipped ahead to the HD part, which isn't really a problem. One test playback did go completely haywire in the SD part and didn't skip to the HD part. Not conclusive on the original problem, but it does demonstrate my point about potential issues of mixing SD and HD in the same recording.

My reply was to the following, which seems to be one (or two) of your original questions. :D

Can anyone with Mix TV confirm that they can watch programmes on Discovery and Animal Planet with a 1 hour time delay (using +1) on their package, but not at the original time of broadcast (using HD) because the main feed is not available in SD. An interesting quirk of VM if the Channel Guide PDF is to be believed.

What's VM only having the HD version of the main channel got to do with it?

What's the channel guide PDF showing?

Makes you wonder why that would be allowed by ofcom
Especially when the slot used to be BBC News HD, I know slot allocation is different on Virgin to the rules for Sky and Freesat EPGs

Do you think they have acquired the a lot from BBC, though I would have thought they would have shuffled BBC Parliament up one spot.

Really don't understand why people get so stressed over slot allocation . :D do people really look and give up if it's too far down a list  Me have all the channels I look at in favourites , you may suggest l am missing something , but never at a loss to watch something , so don't care if I did, if you ain't seen it you won't miss it

I am certainly not stressed about it, further up is more prominent so I can see their point in wanting to be up there with BBC & Sky, but any channels that I do watch I know the number off by heart and usually have it on my favourites or indeed just speak into the remote.

BT Sport channels was own by BT Communications

From last Monday when "BT Sport powered by EE" appeared on BT Sport before every ad break BT Sport is own by BT Ninety-Five Limited who is in own 100% by BT Communications.

I think BT will now "sell" 50% of it shares in BT Ninety-Five Limited to Warner Bros Discovery in a coming weeks to get the joint venture started.

That would be a PR disaster if they just sprung it on customers. They'd have to give lots of notice to do it properly.

It certainly would, and if Virgin and Sky continue with high prices for existing customers, I can see lots of people dumping them due to the cost of living crisis.

I'm watching less and less stuff on the Virgin TV service. Most of the time it's just on as background noise so will probably get rid of it in a few months time.

If you are on the top tier you should receive Sky UHD on-demand content. I was missing out on this but a kind mod over on Virgin Media Community sorted this for me. The Sky content is UHD but not HDR.

Its been a bloody good laugh if you ask me as well as interesting!

So thanks Media Boy and if you can't share a source just yet thats fine. Better to keep good sources happy in the long run.

It's unrelated to the GB News divestment, so probably not. There's always the CNN channel on Rakuten which should be available on many Smart TVs and streaming devices.

I know but I think there will have been reasons for the CNN removal which, probably, won't be obvious to the general public. The planned streaming service collapsed and that probably increases the chances of it returning eventually.

There are actually several regional versions of 4HD on Virgin and have been since the London area changes. As C4 hasn't previously played out the regional HD advertising macro versions, other than London, Virgin has fed the London version into all of its regional 4HD versions. All they need to do is switch the feeds, which should be no more complicated than switching the feeds for various channels after the incident at Red Bee. If Virgin has access to all of the new regional playout feeds, there is no reason why it shouldn't change at the same time as Sky. Unlike Sky, we won't be seeing "tests" as the regional "services" were set up a long time ago. In theory, the feeds could also be switched to the existing BBC B multiplex on Freeview. It might be easier though for Freeview to delay until the changes to fully regionalise BBC B have been completed. That way the correct regions of BBC 1 HD, ITV HD and 4HD could all arrive at the same time. The obvious change on Virgin would be the move to the 104 EPG slot in all regions.

It's also on Sky.

As an update to the above post regarding 4HD. An additional service will be required for Wales, I noticed that SID 10254 is for Virgin networks in Channel 4's South (including Wales) advertising macro region. In order to use EPG channel 108 in Wales, an extra Service ID would be needed. It could be useful, for anyone interested in tracking such information, to watch for any changes on digitalbitrate. Look for a renumbered or additional version of Channel 4HD popping up on the Welsh version of transport stream 102. [https://www.digitalbitrate.com/dtv.p...e=209&lang=en]

That's what he is saying. In Cardiff you will have the London Advertising Macro Region. When Channel 4 eventually makes the correct advertising region available in HD, it should move to 108 and replace the SD version.

I'm not saying they lift their information from online speculation but occasionally it seems to prompt them into researching something they would otherwise have missed.

I'm intrigued about the next big sports rights to come up. Does anyone have a website with key dates? I know the EPL got auto renewed last season for the same amount due to covid?

Would be intrigued to see foreign football rights/F1 etc

Get mine by email. They word it as if they are doing you a big favour, when in reality their regulator required them to do it in an attempt to prompt customers to stop Virgin ripping them off.

Very interesting. I imagine that Virgin don't like sending them out either, so will be watching to see if the outcome of any legal review could also apply to them.

Sky must think that this requirement will seriously damage their profits if they're prepared to take on their own regulator over the matter!

Most people will do that even those who watch live and sit through the adverts would be hard pressed to notice if they had the correct regional feed or the London feed. I've already said elsewhere that Virgin could have, in theory, already switched to the correct regional playouts for the 141 HD service. Who'd even notice the change?

Can, but likely won't. Most Freesat users will just use the Guide, those with non-Freesat generic FTA satellite boxes, on the other hand, are more likely the sorts to have the inclination and/or knowledge to even look.

I've manually tuned in CNN, because I could, I don't actually watch it though, but I'm definitely not the average Freesat user.

I do wonder if with companies reclaiming their own shows for their own streamers they will all be ruthless with keeping them exclusive, whether there will remain secondary rights with the opportunity to broadcast a year or so after they premiere.

That would be dependent on anyone having such a feed in the first place. Not aware that any broadcaster has currently said they'd be arranging that.

If the BBC do, then it would likely be accessible through iPlayer anyway.

Warner Bros Discovery and Comcast can start talking about merger from April 2024:

Given WBD's daunting challenges, it has become accepted wisdom at the highest levels of the industry that another deal waits in the wings for Warner Bros. Discovery. For reasons related to the complicated structure of that merger, no negotiations can happen until April 2024.
