I had wondered whether Worldbox was being wound down after two channels were taken off and never replaced a couple of months or so ago; but after reading the above it seems that this is not the case.

I think it's here to stay and sister company Ziggo have been expanding their similar offering too. http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2016/...lian-channels/

As we discussed earlier in the year, 2012 was the year of more live channels whilst 2016 is turning out to be the year of the app and on-demand services. And interestingly, the on-demand services are not be preceded by rumours; they just arrive!

For once we totally agree , Denphone and 1andrew1 don't agree with me on this but I've said for a while keep an eye on the big global online players.

I'd expect if they decide to move into Sport that we'll initially see them go after sporting content in their home territory (USA) but if this proved successful who knows.

I agree with this, Amazon are already dipping into live sports streaming.

good evening gents. sky movies turning into sky cinema? is this just a normal name change so a straight swap over of channels?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

....Sky say that on satellite, at least, it will mean increased bitrate in picture and audio quality. Also a premier will be on every day, so no, not just a name change.

Plus, I have a bit of info that I was going to post on the linear channels thread about what James Murdoch said recently in relation to linear channels and film rights. Basically, he thinks it may be time soon to stop the process that gives cinemas the right to show films first. He hinted quite strongly that he would like there to be an option for pay tv operators/streaming companies the option to show brand new films immediately alongside their cinema premier.

So, perhaps in the near future, Sky Cinema may be just that. Films that are in the cinema.

I wasn't disagreeing with your point Den ;)

My point was that sadly these days many of these wealthy people think they are above the law , it's now all to common a thing. There's been a few examples this year one that springs to mind was well publicised on the news channels specifically the sporting ones.

Not something I'll have to worry about I've not reached my first million yet.:D Although to be fair I've still probably paid more in tax than some of these multi billionaire companies have.:D

Yes it does make one angry when the ordinary Joe Public seems to pay for tax on everything going while the wealthy employ clever lawyers and find loopholes in the law to escape theirs.:)

As someone once told me we get taxed from the cradle to the grave and even when we have gone the buggers are still trying to take money from us.

I wouldn't hold your breath, Sam. Virgin is talking content, not channels. Expect more on demand shows like Kingdom and on demand services like Hayu as they concentrate on the TV side of things this year.

A few shopping channels may trickle in, however.

By the way for those that don't know, All3media is the production company now owned by Liberty Global and Discovery which in turn are controlled by John Malone. In effect a sister company to VM.

Now, if VM were to add content from other sister companies like Lionsgate (Hunger Games) and Starz (Outlander) together with the new stuff, that would be more interesting.

Ahh, there you go, missed that.

What's a shame is this is like rationing. Malone controls and/or has interests in vast amounts of programming. Instead of getting a few shows piecemeal, here and there. VM should have launched several at once either on a linear channel or VOD or both, for maximum impact.

There is no reason why VM could not have its version of Sky Atlantic minus Game Of Thrones, of course. If you look at my John Malone news thread in the news section, I've speculated that Malone might try and purchase companies like AMC (makers of The Walking Dead) or Scripps who own half of UKTV which VM used to own.

Malone controls or has substantial interests in:

Discovery
Eurosport
QVC
All3Media
Starz
Lionsgate
and ITV.

Starz are working on a new show for next year called American Gods which I've heard that some people think it could be as big a show as Game Of Thrones. So, that would be good for a start!

Other Starz shows:

Black Sails
Power
Spartacus series'

VM has to play a balancing act , whilst it wants to attract new tv customers its also aware it's exclusive content has a limited audience.

I suppose a linear channel could take it to a wider audience via other platforms but do they want to get back into that after selling its channels to Sky.

As is your right, Den. However, you have not told us why you think as you do when the overwhelming evidence is that change is coming.

Apart from the shopping channels, which make money for Virgin, no other new channels have appeared on our platform for some time. All new content has been via on demand and streaming services.

Additionally, I have provided articles in another thread that confirm this is the way most TV thinkers and cable companies in the US in particular are thinking.

I can understand the frustration some people feel with the sluggish streaming services on our particular platform, but when you get a Smart TV or a faster service on the new Tivo, you will start to see how attractive on demand viewing really is.

I felt there was a chance to do this is the past in the non-cabled areas under a different brand like NTL. But now that there is Now TV and all the telecoms players offer a TV service (even late-comers to the party like EE and PlusNet) I think it's probably not worth the effort.

This is the no spin zone Media Boy, is this the truth?:) No spin..., as Bill O'Reilly likes to say more than once, the charming fellow he is...

No doubt when this channel launches it will be renamed "The Donald Trump (lets slag off Hilary Clinton even more than we currently do) News Channel"....

All the no spin comments are from a Fox News show called The O'Reilly Factor where the presenter basically lays into everyone and calls everyone a liar unless they agree with him. One of the parts of the show is called "The No Spin Zone". It's good entertainment, but it ain't news! Check it out when it launches.

Aye it calms me down a tad den not having free view channels just seemed lazy and cheap by VM!

Is spike the only "big" free view channel we don't have now??

Not for those two channels I won't be, Den, although I know some people will appreciate them. ;)

Earlier in the year, Vince said something like VM's head of acquisitions was asleep on the job. In fact, the situation was far worse than that - there wasn't such a person! Since that Telegraph article in April advising that David Bouchier had been appointed to sort VM's TV offering out, I have been optimistic that content issues will be addressed. It looks to me that they are, piece by piece.

But Virgin Media are still missing some channels from Turner.

Boomerang HD and TruTV +1 (If you takeaway CNN HD).

The remaining True Movie channels.

Those True channels are some of the Sony channels I meant.
The missing True channels are True Movies 2 (Sky, Freesat) and True Drama (Sky, Freesat). The other missing Sony channels are music video channels plus the film channels Movie Mix (Freeview only) and Movies4Men. (Freeview, Freesat, Sky)

We have True Movies 1 on 424 and True Entertainment on 189.

Of the Sony channels we don't have, Movies4Men looks the most likely to come to VM as it's on all the other three platforms.

In the absence of a firmer announcement from Sky than "the summer", most speculators have suggested August as being the launch month.

Yes, I certainly did, and it is galling to see the way Sky is allowed to operate. However, if the Government won't do anything about it, I guess nothing will improve unless one of the more inclusive global players like Netflix see them off. They don't seem to have a problem in making their services available on different platforms.

Indeed but Murdoch and his minions have never gone the way of others OB especially given that he knows that he can get away with most things given that many politicians obediently follow and suck up to his every diktat.

Channel 210 is already occupied with hayu.

I doubt we will get Sky Sports Mix as media reports appear to suggest it will only air on Sky TV (satellite).

I think we would already have TruTV+1 if this was going to happen soon since the main channel has just been added.

My bets are on Spike and YourTV.

If there is a third, maybe it's Sony Movies or Movies4Men. Not sure when ITV Encore is coming, but I guess that is also a possibility.
