It's about time a HD swap option was added, instead of moving channels around, FOX HD 158, is one of the few channel numbers I know, that and 212, 310 and 604 lol

As well as the speculation that this may be in preparation for adding new channels; it's been shown that timeshift channels do much better ratings wise when placed next to their parent channel. This attracts better advertising revenue.

Long time, no see folks! I simply hope Virgin have pulled their fingers out of their backsides and managed to sign up some new channels for us.

It could most likely take channels a week or two to start testing on satellite or cable.

Correct thread lol.

DNP has been lifted.

Universal may launch a movie channel exclusively on vm no further information yet and this is still at rumour stage. My belief is with picturebox being dropped we may see that go to a linar channel.

:D

There is no immediate threat to linear channels, but my view is that over the next few years, as more people watch TV by other means, there will be less advertising money available, and this will force consolidation, and so the process will continue.

I'm sorry for those who want the status quo, but I truly believe that this is the way we are heading, so make the most of it now, I say.

Why would you have a dnp on a rumour of something that may happen?

I can now reveal a dnp that Sky Atlantic may come to VM at some stage in the future, but it is only a very, very feint whisper of a very, very unlikely rumour at the moment.:p:

Well, here is one potential scenario:

His source may work in an area where any leakage can be attributed to him only, so they put on a DNP.

Once his source hears the rumour from a different organisation, then he can release the DNP, because if asked, he can point to the other organisation as the probable source.

This is just one of, I imagine, several scenarios that could warrant a DNP on a rumour.

Subscription channel then? Interesting. Cheers for info pal

I wonder what will happen then we lose bt sport in a years time (which so will happen surely) spare money left over. Bill reduction or some sort of premium channel for free?

Obviously won't be a bill drop but surely must be something to replace it. If they just announce bt sport is moving to subscription and don't acknowledge that they're saving money and just send a "we have all the sports yay call us it's 30 notes for sky sports and 15 for bt sports- we got you covered!" Then I'll cancel out of anger. I'll then a month later regret it and subscribe again but the refusal to admit they'd be saving money would legitimately anger me

If the universal movie channel launches i think it will be part of XL as vm need to do something to make XL worth while as at the moment the XL tv pack is becoming the equivelent to Skys hd pack but with bt sports for now.

It seems (to me) the XL pack is acting a sly HD Charge at the moment. Most of the channels in the XL pack are just the HD variants, with a few other decent channels and BT Sport chucked in for good measure.

They do need to do something to beef it up.....just what they need to do, is the question :-)

Remember BT Sport on Sky is £15 extra UC so to have it in the XL pack saves customers a fair amount of money each month as it stands.

I agree, but not all of VM's customers want to watch BT Sport, but...To be fair to VM, the increase from TV L to TV XL without phone and broadband is only £4.50 a month.

The inclusion of BT Sport is amazing and maybe this is their WOW FACTOR which brings the XL pack to life?? I dunno...for me yes as a football and sports fan...but those that aren't..maybe it isnt..It is tough I give you that.

This baffles me as plusnet customers can get bt sport on the sky platform for £5.99p/m or £7.49p/m in hd.
Then again that could be because bt own plusnet lol.

Exactly. People who are kind enough to give us the heads up sometimes need to protect themselves and don't expect to be criticised for it.

I'm seeing reports of HBO's new streaming service "HBO Now" is go to live next month in time for the new Game of Thrones premier.

The cost is reporting to be around $15 a month, but I can't see whether this will be available to those outside of the US.

Would VM consider an App for this on TiVo, or does Sky's agreement with HBO, limit the new content available to the UK to those without a Sky subcription? I'm not sure.

I'm sure that VM would consider this, but given Sky's exclusivity deal, we would only be able to access content via PPV at present. It may be that HBO Go won't launch over here until 2020.

If the content is coming directly from HBO, which is what is being suggested, is this a way around Sky's exclusivity deal?

So anyone could pay the monthly fee a la Netflix, its just getting the App away from the laptop and onto the TV. There was a suggestion the App could be available via PS4/Xbox One which would also be good.

RichardCoulter 05-03-2015 13:18

I guess people will take the available steps to obtain a workaround to access the HBO content from the UK if they are prevented from legitimately doing so.

But don't forget this part:

Quote:

Alongside Apple, HBO is said to be looking to launch on Amazon, Roku, Microsoft’s Xbox and Sony’s PlayStation.

All of which is currently irrelevant to the UK, unless, Sky and HBO can work out some kind of deal to bring a full blown HBO Now service to the UK. If that happens, we wouldn't have to wait until after 2020.

Ultimate.Conj 05-03-2015 13:24

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

I think consumers in the UK should be able to have the choice:

Pay Sky for their services and HBO content on Atantic for X amount per month
or
Pay HBO Now for $15/£10 a month for HBO content.

The Sky deal should only limit what other broadcasters (VM, BT, Talk Talk) can show, but I bet Sky will have some sort of say...

No it's not a way around Sky's exclusive deal. The only way for HBO Now to happen in the UK within the next five years is for Sky and HBO to do a deal. Personally, I can't see why this isn't possible.

you could have argued the same about the wwe network in the uk. wwe and sky signed a new contract to provide wwe programming to sky sports. they've managed to get around it by and still releasing a full version of wwe network to the united kingdom (finally)

new shows are delayed (ie raw/smackdown weekly shows by 4 weeks) maybe HBO can get around the exclusive sky deal by doing something like that??

Sky still get the exclusive programming but the HBO go app can show shows after a certain period??

I have no idea but its just a theory ill throw out there!

I'm not going to pretend I know anything legally about these types of deals, but I kind of thought that HBO content in the UK could only be shown via Sky...but if the content is coming from HBO itself, wouldn't this mean something else?

That's not the way it would be done; Sky have paid for that exclusivity and it is a done deal.

What I think could be done in the UK, is HBO Now launching as an added subscription option on Now TV. Those who want full blown 'all access' could take that option. Those who are happy with limited catchup time frames could stick with the Entertainment pack. Similar situations occur with Hulu, which only has the last five episodes and Hulu Plus, which has back seasons. It's the same with CBS catchup and CBS All Access.

There are several permutations as to how this could work; even removing HBO content from the Entertainment pack? I'm sure that cleverer people than I could work something out.

The difficulty would be how Sky and HBO would sort out the financial side. But without Sky's cooperation, HBO Now is a non runner in the UK until after 2020.

With Picturebox closing in April - this was also owned by Universal, I just found this out. "Virgin Media and Universal Pictures today announce the launch of PictureBox, the leading movies-on-demand TV subscription service, on Virgin Medias TV platform."

Will the Universal Movie Channel be a non-subcription linear channel?
It wouldn't make sense to have another subcription based movie selection when Picturebox hasn't done too well.

Sky has all the subscription tv rights to Universal's new films, so any new/rebranded Universal film channel would only be able to show older films.

Exactly so what would be the point ? It would just be similar to the current Picturebox offering.

Virgin Sources have told Media Boy HQ that Picturebox will be removed from Virgin Media on April 1st.

We are told this is due to its small customer base and to make room for more services in the future.

Maybe Universal think they can get more money if they go £x per viewer and not £5 per month.

I class all information these days as rumours too tbh as in my eyes nothing is confirmed until it actually shows up on the virgin epg which i rely on you guys for that info for these days lol as i just use on demand and online services now.

This was not a dig at you theone. As with MB, I appreciate you making the effort to let us know. I also undertsand the need to respect your sources wishes, I have never belittled any other dnp's from anyone before. This one just baffles me.

Even taking into account the only "one person knowing the rumour" argument (seems unlikely only a couple of people in two major businesses would hear this rumour) why would they be sworn to secrecy if they freely admit something may happen on the back of a rumour? Unless your source is the second-in-command to a head honcho at either Universal or VM, he must have been given the rumour from someone else who already knows said rumour - thus making it unlikely that your source will be suspected.

Still, I do not know the full ins and outs of the process, so it was wrong of me to question it (even if it does baffle me).

Apologies if I offended you with my post, I will try and be clearer with my thought process in future, or even better not post anything about it:).

They can't monetise their back catalogue through a subscription service but might be able to blag enough in carriage fees and advertising revenue to make it worthwhile?

If your DNP orders have been reduced, can you not reveal the information you were given on the one that is no longer in place? Or has this been subject to a SIKAT Order?

By the way, that's a 'Self Imposed Kiss and Tell' Order. :D

It was that bad that I couldn't find anything that I wanted to watch during their free promotions!

I noticed yesterday that BT SPORT 1 FREE had been added to the V+ EPG. To answer my own question, it is indeed a simulcast of the normal BT Sport 1 for the duration of the 'channel'.

I'd have thought that it would have been easier to simply unencrypt BT Sport 1 for the match; but from what i've been told it's more complicated to turn the encryption on and off for cable than it is for satellite- hence the decision to create what is probably the shortest channel life in the history of cable television in the UK!!!

After clicking on that link, Picturebox are still advertising availability on VM. However, upon clicking on their link to VM, all references to Picturebox seem to have been removed. They only mention the films and boxsets available on Netflix and Sky.

I've just seen this on the VM website

þSky Movies On Demand: Over 1000 movies on demand are available to Virgin Media customers from the 6th March 2015.

This is today....Does anyone know if the Sky Movies On-demand section has had a sudden increase or do we have to sign into the Sky Movies app?

Rumour: Sky Movies to be axe from EPG?

An Sky Sources has told me:

Quote:

Sky asked if I was aware of they upcoming price changes and would I be interested in taking Sky Movies again on an on demand basis without live channels. They asked if I would be prepared to pay £10 - £12 for such a service.

Sky Movies is £19.50 per month on Virgin Media. It looks like Sky are ready to launch a cheaper alternative to their usual Sky Movies set-up. No live channels on the EPG with all movies being available on an on demand basis only.

Can someone on TV M please check if they can receive BT Sport 1 on channel 555; i'm curious as to if M TV customers get this.

Apparently, this is also available on satellite, but is free to view as opposed to free to air- meaning that a Sky card of some sort is required.

That's an interesting move from Sky, i think the movies are only available on demand for NowTV on Youview?

More people would probably thing £10-£12 is doable rather than the nearly £20 currently, although i don't think they'll remove the linear channels if people are happy to pay it.
Interesting times ahead and it seems Sky may be leading the way by testing the water.

Yes, this is a good move, Vince. View the linear channels for £20 or On Demand for £12.

All part of the drift towards linear channels withering on the vine over time, I'm afraid.

If it did happen I think Virgin will just put an "Press Red" on all 11 (Taking away that +1 channel) of the Sky Movies SD Channels with the HD channels being reuse for some UPC Ireland Channels or other channels that are not on Virgin Media right now.

TCM may move to Sky Channel 301.

The next development I am waiting for from Virgin is Amazon Prime. Does anyone have any information about this? If I have to wait much longer, I am definitely going to get a Fire TV box because there is stuff on there I really want to see.

However, if it's coming to Virgin in the fairly near future, I'll hold off for the time being.
