Please encourage my laziness of not having to scroll through all the previous discussions and can someone please tell me simple terms answers to the following?
Will I lose all my pictures/documents etc? What prog/applications/features will I gain and what will I lose I'm on Windows 7? What is the best/worst features of Windows 10? How long on average to download it:confused:? Has anyone upgraded to 10 and wished they hadn't. Finally is it reversible? |

On Windows 10 insider preview in build 10240 does the expire date appear after 29th July?

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I am getting close to giving up on this pos, done a upgrade on both machines and both machines will not activate, done a fresh install on both machines and they will not activate.
Spent nearly 2 hours on the phone to Microsoft who confirm that my keys will activate windows 10 via upgrade or clean install, but nothing will work. I am now trying a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on one pc and Windows 8 on another and see if that works, if that doesn't work then Microsoft can go swivel and I will go to Linux instead, to bad you cannot play the likes of Battlefield or COD or most games that I play on Linux. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
@Dave42 you say preview build will never expire?
It's like a trail version of Windows 10. You should remember I did a clean install not a upgrade. |

Well update for me is 1 machine has Windows 8 on it and it's activated using my legit key, and the other machine has 8.1 on it activated so now installing updates and will go from there.
Issue is that the Windows 10 icon is no longer showing, so need to sort that out later. |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
So upgraded both pc's now to Windows 10.
M-ITX Lan/Media Server rig has Windows 10 Home Main Gaming PC has Windows 10 Pro so happy about that. Just doing a back up now of my main pc as that is the only one with a DVD drive in it, and then I am going to try a clean install using the Windows 10 Pro ISO that I am creating at the moment. If it doesn't work with either the Windows 8 Pro key or the one that I have got from Magic Jelly Bean then I don't, know how I am going to be able to do a clean install in the future when I need to. **Update** Done a fresh install using the Windows 8 key, and the one from Magic Jelly Bean and both keys are not being activated, I cannot even change the product key within windows because it says my Windows 8 key is not valid even though I have already used it to upgrade to Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. I wonder if Microsoft will ever launch a version of windows without issues like this, as its always the same pos service from them. 1st blocking legit keys, then telling you that your key is not valid after telling you twice that it is and then telling you that you have to buy a new key even though it will activate when upgrading but not when you try to do a clean install even though they say it should. |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
The fresh install would not accept the Windows 8 key but it accepted the one from Magic Jelly Bean but it will not activate using it, and I cannot change the key either.
It's just pathetic that they seem to have killed off doing fresh installs going by what I am seeing here, and have been seeing since 9am this morning trying to get both machines to have clean install on them. Currently on the phone with Microsoft once again. **Edit** They just hung up on me again. that is the 9th time today they have hung up on me when trying to transfer me or claiming they cannot hear what I am saying when I am trying my hardest not to loose my cool with them since they cannot understand the difference between the numbers "2" & "3". |

|
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Just upgraded one PC and one Laptop, both from Windows 8.1 without any issues, so far.
Took about 2 hours wait for the licenses to get activated, however they are now done. I did try initially to activate as soon as the upgrade was finished, but decided to leave them alone, and they did eventually activate on their own. Have not tried a clean install from the ISO creation as yet, and may not either. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

What a PITA system that is, that you cannot activate until you have not only logged in with your account but also validated the account on your pc which, I can understand for security reasons but you would, have thought that Microsoft Customer Support would have asked for that to be verified first. **Edit** For those who have a similar issue to what I have had all day here is what I needed to do in the end. 1: Install Windows 7/8/8.1 2: Install all updates to the point there is none left 3: Upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 4: Install the Windows 10 Upgrade so that you have Windows 10 installed 5: Ensure you are logged in to a Microsoft Live Account for logging in etc 6: Ensure Windows 10 is activated 7: Download Windows 10 Media Creator Tool 8: Create the ISO file for the version of Windows 10 that is installed IE Home, Pro etc 9: Download Magic Jelly Bean, install it and run it to obtain the Windows 10 key. 10: Burn the ISO to DVD or create a USB Installer using Rufus 11: Carry out a clean install of Windows 10 using the ISO you created. 12: Ensure that when you install it, that you use the key you get from Magic Jelly Bean 13: Ensure once the install is complete that you are logged in using your Windows Live login details 14: Verify your Live account on the machine 15: Check the activation status to ensure you are fully activated 16: Store the key from Magic Jelly Bean somewhere safe as you will need that in the future for any further clean installs if, it does not pick it up from your live account. It is a PITA way to have to do it, since Microsoft say your Windows 7/8/8.1 key should work but it only took me nearly 12 hours to finally figure it out after spending nearly, 4 hours in total on the phone to Microsoft and doing around 10 clean installs and upgrades of Windows 8/8.1 & 10. Now my main pc is sorted I now have to deal with my lan/media pc. |

Force the update but first go into c:/windows/software distribution/download and delete everything in that folder.
Then load up windows update but don't click update. Load up a CMD with administration permission and type in wuauclt.exe/update now Press return then hit update on windows update, whilst it's searching do the CMD command again |

Called Microsoft this morning to get my ITX system activated and they told me that my key had been blocked, for multiple activation attempts failing and that I would need to buy a new key, as soon as I refused I was told to wait 2 to 7 days for the system to be fixed and try again. I am sorry but how can a company like Microsoft not understand, that a Windows 7/8/8.1 key will not activate a Windows 10 OS and that you need a Windows 10 key. Microsoft could have saved themselves a whole heap of issues by just emailing people a Product Key, and saying to use that to activate your copy of Windows 10, but then again Microsoft and Common Sense don't go together that well. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
They are doing staggered updates. I think the UK isn't suppose to be upgrading yet, which may explain some of the issues.

I installed it by other means, a website giving a link to down load it. I had issues with my killer network card/ethernet.
Ethernet was dropping connection randomly and my wifi wouldn't connect at all so removed the driver and reinstalled and that totally bombed it wouldn't work at all. went to pc specialists site downloaded the windows 10 driver and that killed it full stop so had a back up of windows 8.1 driver and installed that and so far wifi is back working ok |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
So I finally have both machines running with clean installs that are fully activated, and in the process of loading programs, games and other software etc.
I have found though that suddenly I have 2 logins showing up on the login page which is preventing the auto login from happening which, I am now trying to figure out how to resolve as in the user accounts section there is only my main live account showing up, and everywhere I look there is only one user which is my live account, but the login page is showing a local account as well. That is on both pc's and I am wondering if it has something to do with me changing the computer names so they are not "PC-XXXXXXX" and instead, are labelled correctly as "Gaming" & "Media", if that is what has caused it then it's yet another PITA issue to fix. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I also have issues with the Soundblaster cinema card in my laptop tried to load that up and windows 10 doesn't like it says there is no card even though the software is loading the card installs ok driver wise. luckily the laptop must have alternative sound as using Via HD audio deck and that is working ok.
Just had a look at the creative website and they wont have any drivers available for most of their sound cards till at least October. I've also having problems with firefox it loads ok but wants to check it's the default browser everytime I open it even though I have checked the box saying it is. Also windows bit defender is on by default and is greyed out so you can't turn it off I'm sure there is a work around for this but it doesn't appear to be conflicting with my Norton software. Other than that I haven't noticed anything else yet but not had a chance to play around with it yet. As with any op system it's finding things but I aren't keen on upgrades like fresh installs as things tend to work better so I might try a fresh install. |

The 2nd user account has a password but I don't know what it is, I have tried all the usual passwords that I would have used, I have tried all the none usual ones, tried pins etc and nothing works I cannot log in to them and cannot remove them at the moment. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Question, you update to 10 and you want to do a clean install on a new drive, are you given a key for the fresh install.
|
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Well I finally figured out the reason for the 2 user logins appearing, and it was because I was telling it that I didn't want to enter the password and instead wanted to boot, directly in to the desktop without asking for a password.
As soon as I changed it back so it asked me for a password or pin, the 2nd user account disappeared. As for the firefox thing, I found it was asking me each time I opened it and then I found that if I opened up the properties for Firefox where you change your home page there, was a tick box that was ticked even though I had unticked it when the pop up appeared, I then also had to change the default browser within the settings. Got to Settings, then System, then scroll down to Default Apps and you can change it there as well but it will still keep asking you until you untick the box with Firefox's properties. |

@alferret
you just do a upgrade and install windows 10. maybe it changed the key for windows 10. I didn't use KeyFinder Magical Jelly Bean to find windows 10 key. I was thinking clean install will automatically detect my BIOS ID (motherboard) to activate windows 10. Microsoft didn't give me windows 10 serial key by E-mail or anything else. it would have made life easy if Microsoft just gave the windows 10 key by e-mail. they did say you should upgrade first then do a clean install, so I was thinking Microsoft will save my computer ID on there system. so you can install and clean install anytime. but will wait for few days and see what happens |

Found a bug, if you own windows 8.1 with media centre, then you may incur the issues I had as in windows 10 downloads, then does prepare installation, then error saying check PC followed by no further windows updates.
Reason is the media center only way I got it to install was the migration tool from Microsoft and choose upgrade to clean. Or you could uninstall media center if that's possible. |
