Also in vms own forums, "Notts TV will be launching on Virgin Media on Thursday 29th May and will be available on channel 159 for Virgin Media TV customers living in Nottingham.

This new channel will show programmes directly relevant to the people who live, work and study in Nottingham and surrounding areas." pretty much what Tricky Trevor posted.

As MB says, BBC RB 2. The other two could have been Price Drop and Bid TV that have been removed as underlying channels earlier than normal, as I doubt that there will be many people with outstanding recordings from these channels :D

Why on earth couldn't they have added this earlier as a placeholder, to enable VM viewers to receive the channel from the start date.

I could (almost) understand this if there had been an organised close-down with the presenters saying their goodbyes. As it was just business as usual, until the studio feed was cut and replaced with a static video slate and music, there wasn't really much to see.

Exactly Richard. Freeview viewers in Nottingham have had a rolling video in the weeks leading up to launch. I was expecting at least a paceholder from early morning seeing as Virgin tend to launch channels on Tuesday's and Thursday's.

So what will happen if you have three shows scheduled to record at the same time, and one show scheduled to finish immediately before that overruns? The show of the three with the lowest priority is cancelled? What if it has no repeat?

If they're going to implement this then they either need to allow the option to turn it off, or find a way to get TiVo to make a decision about which recording clashes to cancel that isn't based solely on series link priority.

Given the development of the TiVo software since Virgin have had it, who here seriously has faith that they will be able to implement this properly?

The current system is, I suspect, perfectly acceptable for most people. I haven't yet missed an episode of The Americans, despite the overrunning of the FA Cup and Champions League finals, because I added padding. I know it's not the most elegant solution, but it's a hell of a lot better than losing recordings in the scenario outlined above - this will happen and people won't even know why.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2014) Vol. 2

An example of the current (in my opinion) outdated recording system on Tivo:

Once on a Saturday a major sporting event ran on much longer than expected so the scheduled episode of Casualty was postponed. Tivo recorded 50 minutes of sport when Casualty was scheduled.

Casualty was rescheduled several days later . . . but Tivo failed to record it because it thought it already had.

I have encountered several similar incidents.

I hope they bring out the Dynamic Programme Guide soon. A serious omission in my view on a box that claims to be so marvellous.

Agreed. I've said the same thing myself several times. And the option to turn it off is essential.

I think Virgin will launch the Sky Sports HD Channels over two nights.

-Night one: Move the channels they need to move to make room for the new Sky Sports HD Channels.
-Night two: Launch the new Sky Sports HD Channels on Virgin Media.

MB Views: With the Smallworld updates set for Monday night I am thinking maybe next Wednesday and Thursday - long shot being tonight and part two sometime after Monday.

But all I have that is confirmed is the full list of channels set to move (and maybe set to move early if reports are true).

Presumably there is some protocol for this type of situation with other platforms. I would imagine that a default setting would see the programme without repeats prioritised over the others.

Definitely agree on the dynamic programming guide. Obviously, iPlayer is a solution for the problem you stated assuming you're in the country. In fact, from this summer the launch of a 30-day iPlayer catch-up service should help matters too.

"Plus Sky's cutting newbies' TV & b'band bundle prices from Fri, so it's a double whammy".

Maybe they'll launch the sports HD channels on VM just after releasing these offers , just a thought.

This is one of the areas where technically a satellite box is better than TiVo, for instance the fa cup final went to extra time, anyone recording britains got talent would have got 40 odd minutes of football, but the epg updated itself with a fresh start time for BGT and because the old recording and the new recording where on the same transponder (same channel obviously) they both continued to record without using another tuner.

A perfect example of why i think a dynamic epg is needed is the fa cup final ran into extra time. Instead of getting Britain's got talent recorded i ended up with Adrian Giles yapping for ages and most of BGT got cut off from the recording.

If TiVo had a dynamic epg it would have to make a lot of calculations if a schedule changed regarding series links and suggestions. Saying that I would welcome it.

It wouldn't surprise me if the Sports HDs launch in the next few days, it would fit nice with the new Big Bundles launching, and Sirius is usually right, at least with BT Sport launching and the info about Virgin getting these sky sports HDs in the first place.

In other news, Disney and Sony have sold FilmFlex to Vubiquity. FilmFlex is a 30-person operation and Vubiquity employs 600 people. Doubtless this will impact positively on VM's on-demand offerings in the medium term.

Anyhow, we know they're coming... at least this time VM are letting us know in advance of what to expect. They have been accused B4 of not giving us enough info. quickly. This time they have and I'm grateful for it.

It looks as if competition is intensifying in the market place as growth has declined and BT and TalkTalk are taking more aggressive stances. Can only be good news for consumers.

And less seriously, a walk-on role in Hollyoaks for everyone taking a VIP collection?

Everything is in place in the background pointing towards two channels moving (SS1 and SS2 in HD) and joining 3, 4 and F1 HD in new EPG slots.

The delay appears to be due to Virgin testing reduced bit rates on HD channels to make some space. 4 HD channels are now being squeezed into 256 QAM multiplexes.

On balance, I think that a dynamic EPG would be for the better. If they had an option to disable this, it would also appease those like yourself who don't want it.

I really hope that VM had the foresight to future proof capacity to cater for the inevitable need to launch more HD channels when they upgraded their television network.

I wonder if the fact that localised channels are carried on the main network, as opposed to being inserted locally, leads to wasted capacity (especially in the case of the BBC1 HD channels)??

The fact that VM appear to be testing out the broadcast of HD channels with reduced bitrate doesn't look encouraging, especially if this leads to reduced picture quality. However, to be fair, the reduction in bitrate may be offset by more efficient ways of doing things.

Don't believe everything you read, especially on DS :). We've been putting 4 HD channels in a mux since 2011.

I was rather pleased when someone started this thread - it confirmed there was no quality problem on the 4-per-mux channels.

Can you list which of those channels are grouped as 4 HD channels and which are only 3 or 2 HD channels grouped? It would seem odd for Virgin to squeeze 4 channels into a mux when it wasn't required (in 2011 they had far less HD channels than now).

Or should we go and ask Sirius on Digitalspy who seems to know more about what is testing in the background than most?

Or should we go and ask Sirius on Digitalspy who seems to know more about what is testing in the background than most?

spiderplant could know what he is talking about he works for Virgin Media.

Sounds interesting. Have you been participating in SKY's Market Watch? They've been canvassing customers in the research group since early March on the deals, offers and collections offered by all rival services. I think they've found it quite eye opening which makes me wonder if these new bundles and prices will reflect the feedback they received.

Don't believe everything you read, especially on DS :). We've been putting 4 HD channels in a mux since 2011.

I was rather pleased when someone started this thread - it confirmed there was no quality problem on the 4-per-mux channels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrat...ude_modulation ;)

The capacity is there to be used. It would be wasted if we DIDN'T use it.

I was coming from the angle that VM were squeezing more HD channels into a mux due to capacity issues.

If the system has been future proofed and there aren't any capacity issues, it won't cost VM any more to utilise any extra capacity that they take (unlike those taking extra space on Freeview or satellite).

That's why I've asked him the question. It could also go some way to explaining why some channels are perceived to have better quality than others.

I can't be bothered to list them all, but it includes Eurosport, Nat Geo and Discovery, which all scored well in that poll.

It's called planning ahead. Do you remember these much-quoted words from Neil Berkett the December 2010 results presentation?
"with a path to grow to 80 HD channels over the next two years, or three years"
He didn't just pluck that figure out of thin air. That was the capacity we had reserved for HD channels.

"Could" is fair enough, some employees clearly don't know what they're talking about, post on here and expect their status as an employee to give credibility to what they're saying even when it is clearly wrong. What usually happens is that you arrive to correct them!

By "capacity we had reserved" does that mean 80 is the current maximum, or has that changed since 2010?

A maximum of 80 doesn't feel very future proof.

Has Notts TV already started elsewhere, or was it's start date delayed on all platforms?

Whatever it is, i'm assuming by the name that it is an HD channel. My money would go on a shopping channel too :(
