I did PM a couple of people about it at the time.

It has been a very good year for Virgin i have to say it looks set to flourish under its new ownership. LG have already done some great deals for their customers getting us BT Sport in XL was a major victory.

Can't wait for the broadband speed upgrades, VM are already advertising the speed increases when i log into my account.

However all these things have come at a cost to customers in the form of a hefty price rise next February. People who have effectively got discounted BT sport may be happy, but others may not be so.

exactly. BT sports is 15 quid a month?? My bill has gone up that amount in the last 12 months almost! Without BT sports would everyones bill have gone up this much?? In hindsight i wish i could time travel back and tell VM not to get BT in XL .

I'd rather fork out 15 quid and know what i was getting rather than these CONSTANT letters every 6 months saying my bill is going up by about 6 quid. I have no idea where or how. At least if i subscribed to BT directly i'd know!!

I'm afraid you do Den. My almost 9% increase is too high IMHO. A fair chunk of that is surely down to BT sports?

den i want to believe you as you're a legend on here. But i'm not seeing any evidence to suggest anything good is coming. Its frustrating to be out of the loop and seeing other people winking and hinting at things.

The good things were coming before winter previously. Now its before February. We don't know whether what the people hinting at things actually know anything or not and if you all do what it is you know. It's frustrating and not comforting as a result.

I am looking this from a different point of view, knocking SKY Sports on the head and that annoying HD £7 charge, so being content with good sport still being available on the XL TV pack and save shed loads of money!

I may even go to the premier collection and get a better service than my legacy deal, I am on the 20mbits L broadband at present that I find annoying!

It's a show I only found recently but really enjoy it. Plenty of episodes on YouTube too.

Here's a link to one of the episodes, if anyone fancies conspiracy type shows:

My favorite episode is the one about there being no gold left in Fort Knox.

Prices went up just as much last year when we had an appalling year for new channel launches. Let's not forget that BT Sport replaced the original ESPN channels which were also premium channels, so the saving on ESPN has at least partially funded BT Sports arrival. Let's not kid ourselves, prices would have gone up just as much without BT Sports in my humble opinion.

I was thinking that myself, with the prices increases I was wondering HAS it been a good year for Virgin and maybe the deal wth BT has overclouded the judgement. So I took a step back and re-analzed this thinking.

Firstly was the arrival of ITV channels which was welcome but IMO overdue in waiting; now topped with the fact UEFA and Champions league matches will be moving to BT (not for a while admittingly)

Some of the oustanding HD channels are deffinate ticks i.e. Animal Planet and Eurosport 2.But these are ticks only if your XL customer and indeed have a HD TV

BT deal you could argue is nothing less than what should have been expected in the initial run; ESPN was considered part of XL for so long now anything but BT inclusion would of been seen as a PR disaster so in essence we are in no worse off and as a subscription channel it made non economic sense not have teh possibility of getting (im not sure whetehr its available on teh smaller operators so down to your opinion whetehr this is agood or not)

Then there was addition of other minor channels i.e the food network and Al - Jazeera, as these are available for freevia other methods (freeview and freesat) you could question whether their inclusion should of come sooner as standard. I would also include into this the BBC HD channels that have launched as there is ways of legally obtaining for free (although if i worng happy to be challenged)

Despite all the rumours and thoughts we are no closer this year than last no matter how you look at it in obtaining the missing HD (sky news, Skysports 3&4, skysports news and F1) or indeed Atlantic. Despite the hope, the will of the people, this deal is no closer than it was last year (and before anyone suggest otherwise I will remain a doubting Thomas until it arrive), but if I am wearing my sky hat there is no commercial sense in supplying to Virgin nor does HBO need to have Sky sublet to Virgin, they are gaining from the exclusive as those who cant get it from Blinkbox pay per view or buy the DVD/Blu-Ray; hence my theory why BT came because sports needs live viewers, HBO and drama shows doesnt. Im afraid I dont buy into this Sky Bravo, my opinion is that is a red herring, but to believe that Sky are more interest in providing content over and above what they have to then im afraid we are mistaken and simply the cost they want for it Virgin has decided not to pay or even simpler Sky do not want to sell.

So in conclusion, has it been a really amazing year; certainly more channels but arent these ones we should of expected anyway and more importantly do they warrant the regular prices increase twice a year for the last couple of years under the guises of "upgrading your broadband at no additional cost" or "BT sport included in XL at no additional cost". Yes these are technically facts but clever skullduggery in teh wording cn hide the real elements.

For those who have shared rumours, their thoughts and opinion throughtout the year I thank you as it has cheered up my working days this year and wish everyone a happy christmas and hope for 2014 for teh year that virgin acquires the remaining channels for all

Right, firstly a thread about the differences between Sky and Virgin results is reasoned debate and now we have a sensible analysis of what Virgin have achieved during the year. Is this definitely Cableforum?

No extra cost:

"The Queensberry Promotions bill will be the first of many for the new channel, which will show all live fights in high definition, and will be available to all BoxNation subscribers on the Sky TV platform at no extra cost, providing they are already HD enabled."

I e-mailed Boxnation about Virgin and got the following reply:

"At present this will only be available on Sky. We are looking however to introduce this to Virgin Media in the near future."

The BBC* have moved the following;

BBC One - 101 (In NI, Wales,, & Scotland ONLY)
BBC Two - 102 (In England ONLY)

and then that only for HD Subscribers/Entertainment Extra+ Subscribers

However Virgin do really need to implement a HD swap!

We got onto the subject when I said that all the TV's in the various MP's offices* that I'd seen looked pretty old, to which he replied "you should see the ancient broadcast infrastructure"!

* Each MP's office has a monitor showing what's happening in the chamber. I'm not sure if this is a clean feed or BBC Parliament itself. Anybody??

If I remember I'll ask next time, or look out for any DOG/Filler programmes that BBC Parliament shows.

I guess neither ITV nor the BBC want to pay for the cost of an upgrade. It wouldn't surprise me if the infrastructure was the actual original equipment from when it was The Parliamentary Channel and run by United Artists (jointly funded by the nations cable companies)!

These aren't unused. They contain all the "hidden" interactive services & red button streams. Don't know if the forth digit on the boxes can be utilised (1000 upward).

Very true young man. I use tvguides app on my phone now i set up the reminders on it and it alerts me a minute or so before the programme starts. Quite a handy little app.

Being that you have Sky why wouldn't you just use the Sky+HD reminder function ?

I bow to your knowledge Ben. I've had 4 boxes over the years and they all blend into one lol.

Would still like the function back though... 'ave a word son... ;)

What a wonderful idea, I guess this deals with the one thing that I wouldn't like with a TiVo, being able to have reminders that don't record the programme too.

You're right Ben. This was an NTL initiative (along with the ability to have selectable, but bizarre, audio reminders of programme reminders).

From what I was told at the time, the ability to rearrange the channel order was dropped after complaints from channel owners (mainly Sky) that customers were not allowing themselves to be reminded of the existence and availability of unsubscribed channels because they were removing unsubscribed channels from their own personally created EPG.

Apparently, Sky were "concerned" that customers didn't lose out.

Was on Telewest areas before On Demand was launched.

How difficult do you think it is to delete a show?

I agree. I simply don't understand why people have a problem with Record and Remind.

It actually provides additional function over bare Remind.

It does exactly the same as Remind. It swaps the channel to the one you want.

In addition, if you are not at your TV at the time, it records the program, so you miss nothing.

I can only imagine that those that find Record and Remind so hateful are just too lazy to push a few buttons to delete a recording.

Hay, it might even be a useful function if your team had a great game and won 10-0. You might want to keep the recording you didn't want for posterity.

You're having difficulty because people don't want that additional function, they just want to be reminded.

It's not difficult to understand. People wanted a remind function that worked outside their PVRs allocation of tuner activity.

Hence some saying they are using external apps to provide this simple functionality.

So they use an external app to remind them that something is on. What do they do then? They can't watch the program if their TiVo is using all of its tuners for recording. That is why we have Record and Remind - that design ensures that TiVo keeps a tuner for you to watch live.

Like it did on the V+/TVDrive..... I thought it was a great feature.

V+, like TiVo, had three tuners but one was reserved for Live TV, making a Remind function straightforward.

TiVo records on all three tuners and hence the (better) implementation of (Record and) Remind.

I don't get what you mean by that; it makes no sense to me. Whether you are recording, or just reminding without recording, Tivo would still need to allocate a tuner for that show.

I do agree with you it would be great to place the channels in the order we want.

I rarely use the reminder function, but does it not give you the option to cancel the recording when it reminds you the program is about to begin?

I'm not so bothered about Sky News HD now since BBC News HD launched. If Sky don't want me to watch their news channel in HD then fine.

Celebrating the pending launch of Boxnation HD :D

Seeing SKY News HD and SKY Sports News HD are on UPC in Ireland, I can see no good reason why SKY wouldn't allow Virgin access.

Don't know, not got a TiVo. Ideally, the ability to remind, remind and record or record only would be ideal.

Same here, I'm really surprised that Sky didn't try to steal a march on the BBC by making their HD news channel available first.

Having said that, the space left by VM suggests it's on it's way. Because the BBC launched first, I believe that (as is mandatory on some other platforms) that Sky should have received a less favourable slot lower down the EPG.

I wouldn't be bothered about the time it takes to cancel the recording, it's the fact that it would be using disc space uneccessarily. This could be problematic if the disc was nearly full and I was away from home.

This is highly optimistic wishful thinking, but given the launch of BBC News HD, Sky are probably desperate to get Sky News HD on to VM. Maybe VM are using that as a way to get Atlantic included in the deal?
