I disagree - there's a big market for people who don't want to wait 12 months from the VOD window >>> Netflix/Lovefilm Window. Hence Sky Box Office and VM Movies.

The likes of Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness won't show up on the likes of Netflix until this time next year. Why deny the choice to watch those films now, for people willing to pay the price?

Virgin movies will stay one suspects that vod will be provided by Netflix and of course they will still be a catchup service

No one is suggesting that Netflix will replace the paid for On Demand; just the free stuff which is TV series.

As long as Virgin carry Boxnation HD when it finally launches. Sadly all has gone quiet in recent weeks. Rumours posted elsewhere suggested the channel has been shelved

Well the news i was waiting for isn't really that exciting i've just been told MGMHD will launch on VM at some point in Autumn.

Also regarding FOX Sky have FOX in their basic package , VM are likely to follow suite with FOX being put into M+. Maybe this is the reason FOX+ has been delayed? i do not know.

You know, I wondered if that would be the case. If I were a betting man, I'd say that MGM/HD will be added at the same time as the Sky channels.

I suppose it is possible we will also get the Sony Movies, but I'm not sure how closely that is associated with the Sky arrangements - I think that may be separate.

I hope that we do get Fox+ and fairly soon. The only programmes I tend to watch on that channel are within the coveted 9 - 11pm slot, so timeshifting is important for getting all my recordings in!

What are Sky given Virgin Media (PM me the list if you do not want to post it online)?

For all we know maybe it just Sky News HD and Sky Sports News HD coming over from UPC Ireland.

Oh no not this again. BT biz was NOT a fiasco there was only news when there was news to report. They had nothing to say as nothing was agreed nor had talks broken down.

VM played a blinder over BT. Really good work.

Hmmm, such a communications fiasco that it was on every national news bulletin that I saw or heard on the day it was announced, tv adverts were in place within 24 hours and we've had physical and electronic mail about it!

I've had my issues with VM in the past about communication issues but I really can't accept your characterisation of this as a fiasco, and if it is I'll be happy to have a few more. Especially if they save me as much as this one does.:D

Couldn't agree more , as an example

The Walking Dead Season 4 Ep 1 airs on Friday 18th October at 10pm

It repeats in HD

Saturday 19th at 2.10 am
Sunday 20th at 9pm.

You also have catch up with most content now HD.

I'd go for separate, the Sony channels aren't in a Sky package but are FTV. Not FTA, suggesting they are only encrypted to restrict viewing in Europe. So, unlikely that they would be included in any deal with Sky.

Thing is I do watch sd, quite happily. But if I have a choice then I do choose hd. But I also have a TiVo which resolves recording clashes, and you and Muppetman have things like never miss. I just think +1's are a backwards step for technologically innovative companies who are already providing many more flexible ways to catch up with missed shows, and generally in hd. The truth is that +1's are really only a way for channel operators to squeeze a bit more out of their advertising revenues, they're inflexible in that they are still scheduled and don't fit with the "what you want, when you want it" ideals of TiVo and Sky+, or even myBBC, and given the number of repeats and catch up options available to people they don't even really offer something that isn't already available.

IMO.

But I would be genuinely interested in Old Boy's opinion, because he said he welcomed the addition of FOX+.

They didn't "leak the news", they announced it in a press release once it had been agreed. It's still there on the VM website.

An innovation id love to see is the ability to record a "link" to the On Demand content when a New Episode is aired - not only would this save hard disk space but also free up a tuner and allow you never to miss an episode of those shows not repeated.

Clutching at straws time?

All it is saying is don't try and find past seasons online unless you are a Sky customer with a 'compatible device'. There may possibly be contractual issues with HBO which require them to restrict how/where these can be accessed.

Just been speaking to a SKY employee, a friend of my wife, who confirmed plenty of rumours at his work in Livingston today. SKY, supposedly, aim to have channels like SKY Atlantic, SKY 1 and SKY Living up and running on NOW TV by the first week of December. It's anticipated that there will be a Christmas push to give those you love at Christmas SKY.

As confirmed today you can buy NOW TV with a 3 month pre-paid SKY Movies subscription. A further rumour today suggested that you will be able to buy NOW TV boxes with a 12 month prepaid subscription to the "SKY basic" channels. I couldn't get a price out of him as he simply didn't know.

SKY Sports News may launch as a free channel on NOW TV for those who miss it from their Freeview line-up.

Whilst this could be nothing more than rumours it's got me thinking that if SKY Atlantic does launch on Virgin, it might not be until after the NOW TV Christmas push.

We will just have to wait and see......

IF and it is a big IF, that tag line is used, I could not think of a more ridiculous present from someone. If I did not have or did not want Sky (or VM for that matter) I would be rather annoyed if someone felt I would like a present which (a) I clearly would not want and (b) a present I would have to pay for on a monthly basis. :p::D

As for Atlantic, I hope it comes for those who want it. However, I still could not care one way or the other.

I doubt there will many leavers either. Firstly apathy will stop many from leaving and secondly I believe the missing sports channels will be more important to many more Sky viewers than Atlantic. I know a lot of Sky viewers who do not watch much on Atlantic, but watch considerable amounts of sports. If Sky gave VM the sports channels and Atlantic though, that might change things.

Also, if VM get Atlantic and they were scared of a mass exodus of customers, I am sure sky will have something up their sleeves to keep customers. I may not be the biggest fan of the way they conduct their business, but they do know how to run a successful business, keep customers and stay at the top of the TV tree.

Dave42 16-10-2013 21:05

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

SA alone wont make many leave sky I was talking all the withheld channels not just SA as VM is much better value than sky and free bt sports too will make lots switch if VM got all the withheld channels from sky

I'm not surprised at that. I reckon it's probably the case that most people still watch sd variants live, and make tea in the ad breaks as well. There's nothing wrong with that, of course, but that doesn't mean there's a good argument for more sd channels or extra commercials.

What I'm saying is that there are already ways to achieve what +1's aim to achieve, but do so with more flexibility, and also with better quality, although I accept that's not necessarily the priority for most. I can't understand the clamour for them. They don't add new content, they're not in hd, and Virgin already offer a range of ways to time shift your viewing, including the provision of a set top box which resolves the recording clashes which appear to be the main reason people want them.

No?

I can understand your point of view.

Let's say you could buy an entertainment package with NOW TV for £80.00. For £80.00 you get a full years access to SKY One, SKY Atlantic, SKY Living, SKY Arts, SKY Sports News, SKY on demand, iPlayer, Demand 5 and 4oD. If I didn't have SKY or Virgin, and only Freeview in my house, personally I'd be delighted it someone bought me 12 months or premium TV as a gift.

Every year be it through work or a family member I always get some vouchers or money to spend. Again if all I had was Freeview, and a tight monthly budget, £80.00 for a full years worth of SKY programming would be really appealing.

Each to their own of course. I see this as a good add on service for those looking for a little bit extra, entertainment wise, without the need of a monthly subscription commitment.

Probably because most people still watch live TV and put up with sitting through adverts, rather than use a PVR as an actual PVR. A by product being that they'll watch an SD picture rather than watching an earlier recorded version (or later in the week repeat) in HD.

It'll be a long time before many people let go of watching live linear TV channels.
