And they'll probably try to cram it on the same transponder as all their other channels by lowering the bitrate still further. Watching UKTVs SD channels is like watching TV with a stocking over your head

...and no, I haven't tried it...

Unless Virgin Media sign new deal for Drama - UKTV may ask Virgin to remove one or two of the +1 channels or even Blighty will close for Drama to launch on Virgin.

Yes, I remember that. The God channel was an encrypted stand alone channel, but it was free to add it. I never saw the point of this and they did eventually just add it to all packages.

This used to be the same situation with S4C when Sky digital first started.

I wonder if reasons for this were that the old carriage agreements meant that VM and Sky charged the channels per viewer, or (in the case of S4C) that the channels had to initially pay extra to the programme rights holders for each person watching outside the intended area?

I also remember that when the God Channel started expanding into providing more channels on Sky, they had an odd "encryption" method that used a different system to NDS. The channels were watchable, but had no sound until the subs were paid!

The God channel even had their own digi box, where only "traditional family values" type channels could be received, not sure if this is still going though...

It' been on my V+ since this time. It looks to be showing programmes, by not launching, do you mean it is/was showing a promo loop?

A) It an only UKTV Channel with no +1 hour channel.
B) Do anyone watch it? - I don't.
C) If UKTV do close Blighty down they will not need to buy an other Channel slot on Sky to broadcast Drama.

Or maybe Drama will just be featured strands from Alibi / Gold / Watch and be a freeview exclusive.

Cross wires , I was referring to Hell on wheels which is available in TCM on VM On Demand.

Got a few other series to work through from last year, to be honest it's easier to set up a wishlist and then watch it when I get time in a few months. But I may sneak a peak at the first couple of episodes to see what it's like.

In August 2011 Neil Berkett said that VM had the same deal to get the UKTV VOD and HD channels as Sky and that they would be rolling these out in the next few months. The missing linear channels and HD channels appeared, but not VOD.

Hi, we are still looking into this. We will keep you posted.

Yes, I know that. My point was based on the UKTV press release which only states that the channel will be available on Freeview. Although the footnotes to the press release then go on to confuse the issue.

Aha! the next few months... sounds similar to the Universal HD / E! HD rumour. I guess 2 or 3 years could be considered as the next few months, it's a little too vague.

So essentially, if UK TV drama doesn't launch on Sky and/or Virgin Media, it will be the only such channel in the entire UK TV stable of 10 channels plus HD and plus 1 variants.

True! But if UKTV perform a massive U-turn, and provide Sky and Virgin with Drama ((and possibly even Drama HD and Drama +1 (if we're lucky)), I feel Sky and VM will be more competitive than ever tolaunch new channels onto their platforms. But that is just me, though:D

Which would make sense if the channel shows programmes for which UKTV has FTA rights, which are already available to Sky / VM viewers on Alibi / Watch etc.

Channels starting as Freeview exclusives usually end up on pay tv at some point.

Maybe UKTV is using the channel to see how popular the format is on freeview. With a view to merging it with another channel at a later date, assuming it is successful and they purchase FTA rights for the rest of the programmes.

I've also found this. http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/...ht/true#M55520

So at 19:28 he quoted clint's post, then 34 minutes later, not only had he sent his own email to Neil Berkett with wording strangely similar to clint's, but Mr B had also replied with a similar, but embellished, reply.

You may also care to search this forum for the word "Gerald" ;).
Actually I was disappointed when he was banned. I found him quite entertaining.

Ok, so if you're able to answer I have two questions.

Firstly, was Neil Berkett correct and Virgin Media DO have the rights to UKTV on demand content, or was he mistaken and they do not?

Secondly, if they do, for what reason would they choose not to make it available to their customers?

Archive content from BBC Worldwide already appears regularly in TVOD. Maybe the deal with UKTV would only cover UKTV's own commissioned programmes, which perhaps Virgin don't see as offering good enough value for money?

I see Sky are now advertising that they have the widest range of on-demand catch-up channels.

Is the UK TV on demand content on Sky + HD the same or very similar to what appears in the BBC section of TV on demand on Virgin? That would make some sense.

Sky's catch up includes their own channels, I believe?

And PPV movies , Sky Store currently has 1188 movies available today according to the Sky Movies app which is more than double that of Virgin Movies On Demand , at the moment I would say VM has a larger library section with more full box sets than Sky. It's great how competitive the On Demand offerings are now getting especially when you throw in Lovefilm and Netflix as well.

Cheers, MM, that's useful. Ok so it's not exactly the same but, if it was going to cost money to add UK TV od, I could certainly understand why Virgin would choose to save theirs.

In BBC channel in TV for xl is an absolute shed load of Dr Who, 4 series of outnumbered, complete Waking the Dead, Spooks and This Life as well as Porridge amongst other things.

So is that it then? No UK TV on demand because the BBC deal already covers the same sort of ground?

I quite like Republic of Doyle for a bit of comedy drama. It doesn't hit the mark completely, but entertaining enough. I've just re watched the first few episodes on Netflix UK and it seems a little better than I remember after a three year viewing gap.

I can't see BT letting VM customers have it "free." They are trying to use their sports channel as a lure for people to take up their tv and broadband packages. There is a link to a BT statement, either put on here yesterday or Saturday!
