You could try a full system backup with a boot disk (I used AOMEI backup), then install a free evaluation version (32 bit is supposed to be lighter on resources). If it fails, you've got a recovery path and you haven't spent anything. If it works, revert to XP and buy an upgrade. Of course, the experience is likely to be different on a netbook. EDIT: In the light of Ben B's post below, you could also try a Win 7 evaluation. |

Updates are published on the second Tuesday of the month (no idea what time), but bear in mind that it's Seattle time, so we don't get to see them till late Tuesday or Wednesday.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let's cover a few heads-up/FAQ comments: •It will likely change your system's current behavior: ◦For starters, unless the device is a tablet, a system with this update will boot to the desktop by default ◾You can still choose one way or another but I was surprised when I rebooted and was taken to my desktop instead of my Start screen ◦See the chart further down in the post for a clear list of what default settings are changed and how •It does NOT include the Start menu that you may have seen/heard about at the recent Build conference. Will this Win 7 work on my Samsung NC-10 (2GB RAM), or is a different version needed, and is a cheaper version required.

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
That will work fine, a lot of Netbooks come with Windows 7 Starter which is just Home Premium with personalisation/aero disabled and no Media Center. I had the starter but it came with an Anytime Upgrade key for Home Premium and there was no decrease in performance

I didn't get the update yet. Give it a couple of days I guess then try to install it manually.

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
You're not missing much as a PC user - I too was hoping for a more traditionally functionable start button. Other than any 'under the hood' changes all I've noticed is the Store button on the taskbar (useless as I rarely if ever use the Store). Also clicking on the start button and going past the 'Metro' screen allows you to sort the apps in to most used, name, date installed etc which I guess is a bit more useful. Not sure if you were able to do this before but you can also shrink the taskbar to about half the width which will help if you have a small screen.
There may be other cosmetic changes but for how I use my computer that's about it. |
Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Of course the main reason for the update is that if you don't do it, you lose any future security updates for 8.1

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
I am still using Windows 8 on my laptop and use StartIsBack so I am assuming that I will need to sort out the original 8.1 before I can install this latest 8.1? Only considering doing this because of Ben's post above which mentions that " if you don't do it, you lose any future security updates for 8.1 "
Is there anything I need to know about/do to ensure a smooth install? |

This may be a silly question but do I need to switch off my antivirus whilst the 8.1s download/install? Being a scardy cat I am afraid. |

However, I'd personally say it's worth the upgrade to 8.1 via Windows Store anyway - there is nothing in either update that makes Win 8 worse ;) Personally, I think one of the nicest tweaks 8.1 does is allow you to have your desktop background on the Start Screen - makes a huge difference in feeling more connected between it and the Desktop, and then the 8.1 update goes further down that route. |

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Well an hour and a half later I have got the first 8.1 up and running. What a pain!!!!. lost my startisback and had to endure the tiles whilst I got it back. I may be a stick in the mud but without a touch screen I hate the tiles concept.
I will do the next 8.1 tomorrow so will probably be three sheets to the wind by tomorrow evening. <<<Reminder to me, buy more Gin.>>> :D |

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
Still using Windows 8.1 without a start menu replacement app.
The last time I had to use the start screen was when I actually installed Windows and that was only to create the shortcuts on the desktop and get, the 8.1 update. I will be happy when the start menu is back but I can live without it and that is why I have not gone for something like Classic Shell. It does take a few extra steps sometimes to get to some of the options on windows 8 compared to windows 7. Either way I will continue to use windows 8 without a replacement tool, but I do hope that they introduce the menu back in to it like it is in windows 7 just to make getting to some options abit quicker and easier. |

Re: [MERGED] Windows 8 discussion
According to new details from Wzor, Microsoft will roll out another update to Windows 8.1 (Update 2) sometime in September of this year, during the Autumn season. Microsoft may refer to this update as Windows 8.1 Update 2 or may even call it Windows 8.2, as there appears to be some sort of heated internal discussion on what to call it. Microsoft is expected to roll out the Start Menu, showcased during Build 2014, in this update.

By definition a service pack is a series of updates fixes or enhancements Also seeing as Windows 8.1 changed NT version from 6.2 to 6.3 and 8.1 update still keeps 6.3 Update 1 even more looks like a service pack do you not agree? So 8 to 8.1 was a version change 8.1 to 8.1 update was a service pack. If the next update is a new Kernel then it shoudl be 8.2 if it is not then it should be a service pack which they will call update 2 |

Windows 8.1 Update 2 Confirmed
Microsoft has already rolled out Windows 8.1 Update, but the company is now working on a second pack of improvements that could be released sometime this year and brings several improvements to the modern platform. According to new details that reached the web this morning, Microsoft is already working on Windows 8.1 Update 2, which is another sign that this OS version is very likely to hit the shelves in just a few months. Microsoft has already confirmed at the BUILD 2014 developer conference that it's working on a second update for Windows 8.1, but only a few details have actually been confirmed. Windows 8.1 Update 2 will come with a new Start menu that would try to make the modern operating system a bit more familiar and thus bring back the full functionality of the desktop available in all Windows versions before Windows 8. full article here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windo...d-441852.shtml |
