Indeed, Virgin could hardly be described as prolific or quick off the mark when it comes to launching HD or channels that appear on Sky or freeview:o:

Yes. Sky announce things and they happen. VM announce things and they happen. Some things just take longer than expected. Big whoop. Some of us aren't hanging on every word taking it as gospel. Things will happen then they happen :)

No the point is Virgin have announced very little in the past year by way of new channels or increased HD and in fairness they've delivered it.

Big Whoop??? Really? Really? Really?

So they've announced nothing and delivered it. Isn't that good? ;)

Yes, really. Hardly enough time to watch on the channels I currently get :D

Telly_ 04-06-2012 00:54

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

So to summarise ,

Virginmedia promise nothing and deliver nothing.

Sky promise new services/channels and deliver new services/channels.

carlwaring 04-06-2012 00:59

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

Not at all. Erm... Tivo? Announced and delivered on time.

I think the broadband speed upgrades are on-schedule as far as anyone knows.

The problem is that, sometimes, things get announced and then delayed for whatever reason. Which then gives the Sky fan-boys and VM haters more to complain about.

So which is better? Announced then delayed or only announced on launch? Not sure myself :)

I really don't understand why this is such an issue, if your happy with the service you have Sky/Virgin stick with it, if not switch.
Both have good and bad points, personally I am happy with the service I have from Virgin, if more channels are added result.

Not read this for ages and going through 68 pages will take too long so sorry if already asked.

Are there any rumours about getting SS3 and 4 and News in HD anytime soon? Not fussed if it isn't for a few months/years, just be nice to know SKY will let Virgin have all the Sports channels in HD as well.

Mark l am afraid l don't think we will be getting the above named channels anytime soon in HD because as stated in previous posts this is due to Sky deliberately with-holding these channels from other suppliers but alas l am sure if we wait another ten years then those toothless buggers at Ofcom might actually then decide to do something about it.:)

In the past year we've had more channels, more hd and +1 variants, increased on demand programming, including the minor coup that is Sky Anytime, as well as a promise of increased broadband speeds and network investment to support that promise and future proof provision of television services. Despite this investment, and against an economic climate where households are having to review their spending on non essential services, Virgin have grown their business thanks in no small part to TiVo, and have posted their first profit, all of which is positive news for the future. If you chose Virgin over Sky to provide your services, then the simple fact is that they're doing it better and more efficiently than when you first asked them to do so, and are in a stronger position to continue that progression than ever before.

And besides, like Carl says, how much TV can anyone actually watch!?

Whilst I agree with your comment Andy, I think some of the growth experienced is due, in part, to the economic climate. How much does it cost a family of four to go to the cinema to see the latest blockbuster? Once you've bought drinks and snacks it's probably the best part of a months subscription for VM or Sky, so if money is tight then you look for the 'best' return available for the money you have.

Cheers

Grim

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

I find it hard to complain about the lack of new channels when we are going to get 48 Olympic goodies next month.

I guess the question is what can Virgin do with this extra capacity post Olympics. Any new Sky channels or Prem Sports or even ITV HD 2-4 will still be difficult so what channels are out there that are both reasonably priced (or free) and worth having?

carlwaring 05-06-2012 16:12

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

That new Sony Movie Channel.

CBS Drama/Action, whichever is the one we don't have currently. (I can never remember which!)

Those are my main two.

Sky Atlantic would be good but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I would really like Virgin to push on and try and secure as many non-SKY HD channels as possible. I would also like the opportunity to subscribe to Premier Sports. Other than this there really isn't too much that Virgin could add that would make me go WOW! There really isn't too much out there, that Virgin don't already offer, that would significantly improve my viewing pleasure.

Even the "jewel in the crown" SKY Atlantic isn't a massive loss for me. Anything that has taken my fancy from SKY Atlantic, I've managed to find it from elsewhere often before the episodes have even aired in this country. If the channel was to come to Virgin I'd happily pay for it as part of my subscription. As it stands the channel is being withheld from me through no fault of my own. I'm locked in contract with Virgin and can't join SKY. I could wait until SKY Atlantic programmes are released on DVD, over a year after their original TV airing, however I refuse to pay £40.00 for a DVD box-set of a programme I've never seen or might not like.

Why bother well VM have customers paying a fair amount of money for a service every month for one.

Also if the plans did not come to fruition all VM would need to do is communicate the reasons why simples as the meerkats might say.:)

Sorry of this has already been mentioned but from Wednesday 30 May we've been able to enjoy English subtitles on many of the most popular programmes on TV5Monde.

TV5Monde has always been the place to go for the best in French language entertainment, but until now subtitles have only been available in French. The change means that more people will be able to enjoy fantastic drama, documentaries and films from across the channel.

You can find TV5Monde on Channel 825.

To be honest, I would be surprised if we didn't get it, VM must be clear by now that many of us want this channel and we are out of the one year exclusivity period that I believe Sky wanted.

It is a very expensive option for Sky to keep this channel exclusive to Sky satellite viewers because of the small audience that this yields, although I know their pockets are deep.

My guess is that we will get the channel after the Olympics channels have closed down, but (before you point it out), that is only my opinion.

One of the guys on the AV forum seems to be verifying this, but who knows whether that person has access to privileged information!

The cynic in me says that this was what our recent price increase was all about!

Well, we'll see. You can't blame Sky for making the most of the exclusivity window while it exists, can you?

Incidentally, we've just had a price increase!

You mean the one back in April? Shouldn't we have the channel by now if that was the case?

No. That was just the usual, annual price increase; like the one Sky have each year too :)

I think VM planned to take Sky Atlantic later in the year and the increase would have taken into account that we will only have it for part of the year.

Well, that's one explanation, anyway!

Yup, it will effectively be a two year increase....HAHAHA - the mugs!!!!! I believe (I have nothing to back this up with) we will get a lot of the stuff we are hoping for in Sept, the new update - with reminders, more HD channels (even if its only the ITV ones, but I suspect it will be most of the remaining ones we are missing.) I will be happy with just Nat Geo Wild, Universal and History tbh. Looking forward to the possibility of some better apps too, Netflix/lovefilm anyone:) Am feeling very positive for September. The one thing I hope though is that it is not only Sky Atlantic that comes our way in September......waste of space and can happily live without it. If I wanna know about Game Of Thrones (possibly the only good thing I hear about Sky Atlantic, other than the now cancelled Luck) I will read the books.

I would not get to excited, if you have any of Sky's premium services, VM will probably put the up the price of these at the same time as Sky put their fees from previous experience.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

Nope, getting rid of Sky Sports package. I got it mainly for the cricket and we can't even access the red button on that (NOT VIRGINS FAULT, and I don't blame them.) I refuse to pay £7 (damn near full price) for a continually sub-par service we are allowed from Sky.
If they realized people are willing pay the going rate on VM they would get much more income on the sports and most channels.
I believe will waste my time and send them e-mail regarding my frustrations and why they are now going to be losing money in the future;)

I know we get a lot of speculation on these forums, but the poster on the AV Forum seemed very sure of himself. However, he did not provide any back up to his post, although this could just be that he is an insider and it is very confidential at this stage.

It does seem strange to me that Sky would be willing to continue to pour so much money into this channel and receive so little advertising and subscription revenue from the smaller audience it gets by confining the channel to Sky satellite viewers.

I assume, Media Boy, that your comment relates to the fact that you have had no news about Sky Atlantic (rather than anything definite you know of that VM will not be going for it or that Sky will be continuing to price us out of the market).

This is the only extra channel that I really would like to see on Virgin Media (because of its exclusive content), although additional HD channels would be good also. I am not so worried about the other channels on Sky as they are mainly low grade channels or channels that show repeats all the time.

As ever, as far as Sky Atlantic is concerned, I guess we'll see it when we see it!

If Virgin eventually get Sky Atlantic I wouldn't put it past them to launch a new channel shortly after called Sky Universe! And then market this for exclusive Sky programming which doesn't happen to be available on Sky Atlantic.

Just looking at the suggested channels it was obviously a lie. Why would VM who is said to be short on space, launch niche channels? It also made no sense that Dance Nation would launch when it is the only chartshow plc music channel not on the Freesat EPG and gets far less viewers than the flagship channels Chartshow TV and Vault

Space is not a big issue, but it may be that it was more trouble than it was worth to launch new channels before the Olympics channels had run their course.

I guess we will just have to wait and see, which, in the absence of material information from Virgin Media or the channels themselves, is the only way we can be sure of what is happening.

To me personally +1 channels are NOT NEW channels, and l cannot see VM bringing out new channels after the Olympics either.

We have had so many promises over the years, and when new channels come out they are +1. What l want to see is Premier Sports and NEW channels.

Nobody on this forum knows exactly when new channels will become available as it is speculation and when they are known it is probably a done deal weeks earlier!

I guess we probably not be looking at any new channels until the autumn now, than the ones already known in MB update!
