The only difference between the Gerrard tackle and what Rafael did a couple of minutes earlier was Gerrard caught the player. Definitely a card incident but red... i'm not so sure.

Damien 09-01-2011 16:27

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

Easily a red card. Not just by the letter of the law but also in the sprit. Players can get serious injured in those challenges. Gerrard threw himself into it with no care.

Great set of saves from Reina. Liverpool not doing bad considering they are down to 10 men.

---------- Post added at 15:27 ---------- Previous post was at 15:05 ----------

United 1 - Liverpool 0

Liverpool can probably be happy with this game. Lost to 1 goal which was a very dubious penalty decision and otherwise held out well against United, especially when down to 10 men.

Also gerrard dived in studs up and rafael pulled out of his challenge. The two challenges can't really be compared imo.

The penalty was dubious but he did touch berbatov so it was always going to be given regardless of how easily he went down.

United probably edged the game overall.

There's alot of lower league sides will have wanted them to be in the draw shortly, let's hope one of them gets lucky. :)

Both feet off the ground is a red, some would have given a yellow but Webb didn't.

That said, and the weak penalty decision I'm not that dissappointed in our performance today. 10 men for most of the game, yet still attacking and Reina made 5 saves consecutively (the man is pure class), Kelly looked good too

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

Was a decent performance, very pleased with the level of effort overall although Raul and Nando both had a bit of a shocker... and Stevie what were you thinking lad? there's just that niggling streak of indiscipline in his game which it seems will always be present.

Looks like the arrival of Steve Clarke as Kenny's assistant is imminent which is a pretty significant appointment based on his previous good work at Chelsea.

Nor do most fans. The constant feigning of surprise and disgust when a player dives is getting tiresome. Players go down all the time when there is contact, every single club does it.

thats true....

All the teams have them...and I just wish that the refs would be harsher or better in spotting the falling down act and have video evidence for the FA when ref doesnt do anything and punish the player with a 3 match ban.

I do find it annoying that fans ignore the fact that their team more than likely have benefited from dodgy ref decisions in the past and not said anything and then kick up a fuss when the decision goes against them.

Unfortunately, every team seems to do it and until it sorted throughout football, it will continue and no, I don't condone it.

Yes he did make the most of the tackle, but I do believe that the red card was correct.

I was slightly annoyed with Kuyt getting Fletcher booked, but I've not doctored a photo of Webb in a Liverpool shirt ;)

I did read your post and my point is that most fans seem to ignore what their team do and then kick up a fuss when something goes against them (as seen this weekend).

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

It is difficult for referees, especially with incidents like yesterdays when the player did get touched by the defender. Deciding whether the contact is enough for the player to be put off balance and go down is whats difficult, even when seeing replays. But its something that players are expected to do now, if you feel contact, go down.

Uncle Peter 10-01-2011 19:27

Re: Football Season 2010/2011

Yesterday's game aside it's about time something was done about referees who feel that they have to be the centre of attention even if the decisions they make fly in face of common sense or are just blatantly wrong. Webb falls squarely into this category just as the likes of Uriah Rennie and Keith Winter did before him.

How a referee who allowed blatant acts of violence and thuggery to go unpunished during a world cup final is still officiating at any level is beyond me. All referees have a bad day at some point and make mistakes but this bloke takes the biscuit: you can bet your bottom dollar that something controversial is going to happen as soon as you see his name on the back of the programme.

Scottish Football isn't exactly great. He is right as well. Celtic and Rangers meet all the time and it's incredibly boring now. Will there be a total of 5 matches between them this season? No one takes the Scottish League too seriously outside of Scotland and it's influence diminishes further every season.

I dunno. Arsenal is always expensive anyway :erm: It's the same cost as if it were a United game though so I imagine not! They do prevent alcohol being served and due to sponsorship issues they call the stadium 'Arsenal Stadium'. Which is weird. All the boards have to be UEFA sponsors and the logo banner has to go across the stadium inbetween the tiers.

Spurs excellent so far, really enjoyable and United are nowhere. Although it's a summary of United's season that despite being unable to make a mark on the game they aren't behind. Looks like it's going to be a draw. Possibly because Crouch is the weak link in this Spurs team so far.

we were awful today no one in the midfield could keep the ball and Nani did nothing the entire match.

Think Andy Gray summed up all that is wrong with football today at the start when he said it us up to Rooney whether is choosing to leave his legs behind and claim a pen. It's either a foul or it isn't if the attacker has to choose what to do then it can't be a foul or a pen that is just plain cheating

Apart from the fact that in the whole of the second half, even against ten men the only real chance they had was when Hernadez stupidly laid the ball at Van der Vaarts feet.

Rooney, Berbatov and Nani were nowhere today and United still got a point, no thanks to that plonker Mike Dean.:(

Overall a fair result.

One thing I did notice yesterday was the pathetic attendance at the so called 'Second City Derby'

Whilst all of the other three games on Sunday were around 1,000 below capacity, due no doubt to segregation/separation considerations, our self styled second city managed a turnout almost 8,000 below capacity.

Some second city.

Jim.

Yep, seems the reports jumped the gun... though how many times have we heard a board put their faith in a manager only to sack him a week or two later

Actually, that fault could be laid at the feet of Birmingham City, not both - when they played at Villa Park earlier this season, the crowd was only a couple of thousand below capacity.

Mind you, I'm a Villa fan, and I wouldn't want to be seen dead at St Andrews (ignoring the fact that I live 140 miles away) ;)

Steven Pienaar picked up by helicopter from LJLA this morning and on his way down to London. Spurs or Chelsea, take your pick.

It's Spurs.

Rather insane if you ask me. Spurs have one of the best midfields in the league. I would say it ranks 2nd to Arsenal's midfield (although I am biased I think it is fair to say Arsenal have the best). If there is one position they do not need to strengthen it is midfield. However Spurs, much like Arsenal, have problems at the back and they also need a better striker.

You only have to look at Liverpool to see what happens if you stand still and stop trying to improve, they have lost Bentley and the Pienaar deal has been paid for from Darren Bent's sell on clause so it's a no brainer for me.

Liverpool are an example of poor buys, not enough decent youth players and mismanagement more than anything. None of which apply to Spurs.

It's a good deal monetary wise. However I would say you need to improve in the areas you're weak first and there is such a thing as too many quality players. Maybe other decent players won't get the space to break though. Using Arsenal as an example, because I am more familiar with them, Wilshere is a beneficiary of Wenger not buying to improve an already strong midfield. Bale would be a good example of someone who may not have broken though if this deal happened a year/a year and a half ago.

Who will be knocked further down the pecking order to make way for him? Maybe he will be rotated in or will be a first team fixture. I don't know. However I don't think he is really better than their current crop, which is why it puzzles me. It's adding to the squad, and not in areas where they needed it. Maybe they are in talks to sell someone....

LFC have accepted an offer from Hoffenheim for Ryan Babel. Now official.

Still loads of speculation over Luis Suarez, Downing and Young.

Looks like van Bommel is off to Milan.

Decent youth policy lol who was the last through their ranks, Ledley King.

Who is to say they aren't going to improve other areas and they don't have to many quality players, it's a squad game and you need 2 for every position, they play 5 in midfield and Pienaar can play anywhere in it.

We already know who has been knocked down the pecking order, Bentley. Or maybe they are in talks to buy some one

Tottenham are locked in a battle with Benfica to clinch the signing of Marseille defender Taye Taiwo. The Nigerian international, valued at £5m, has also been targeted by Everton.

Mmm. Might have a point there. I have always associated them with a good youth policy though.

Well so far they have not. All I have to go one as of yet, they probably will granted because they tend to be quite active in transfers. I was simply commenting that this transfer, while good value, is not needed. I am not a fan of clubs buying players because they can.

The Club announced on 12 June 2009 that for the 2009/2010 season it would not be entering a team in the Reserve League. Instead the reserve players would be loaned out for first team experience, and if necessary friendly matches would be arranged as required during the season to test out players returning from injury

I simply cannot understand the rumours, that Tottenham keep going after defenders, we have so many defenders at Spurs that you could field a reserve tem of them, we need a couple of strikers.

Unfortunately those defenders include Ledley King & Jonathan Woodgate who can barely kick a ball between them for 10 mins without getting injured

How so? Surely they will be saving money? No transport, hotels, reserve team manager etc. to pay for? Although I will happily be corrected.

Still difficult to see who is going down and how the top of the table will pan out. On the current state of affairs I would have to say that West Ham, Wolves and Birmingham. I for one would welcome the relegation of Birmingham.

I don't think she did too bad, in fact she was spot on with the offside decision. It really shouldn't matter what gender someone is so long as they make the correct decisions (at least most of the time).
