lightning89,

Yeah, it's a bit like the Ambit 256 only different colour and perhaps slightly larger.

I would have pushed (not literally) the advisor as to when your area looks likely to be receiving the speeds to which you are expecting.

Haha, she wasn't that bad, but there's a few telephone help service staff I've felt like pushing off numerous things before! I'll give it another week or so and if there's no difference I'll give them another call explaining that I phoned up before and was told they were fixing the issue. I'll get back to you when I have the response. Thanks!

lightning89 could you post your modem config? Someone on here could then tell you if there is a problem if your modem has accepted the update. Some modems are refusing the new config files. My dad's surfboard did this. If this is the case faults are really good at sorting this out.

Like MikeyB I am now awaiting the arrival of a new 256 modem to replace my aged Ntl:Home 100. I was advised that this was up to the job when I registered but it seems there can be issues with both this and the 120.

Thanks again.

Installed my Ambit 256 this morning and this is result:

Hi Hansi, it may well be delivered by independent carrier, http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/im...ons/icon14.gif

When I received my new modem (a few months back) it was delivered, as I had been led to expect, by UPS. It was my understanding that VM use UPS for all deliveries of modems and, as might reasonably be expected, a signature is required.
I do not know, however, if UPS do deliveries at eight o'clock at night.

Ok all seems to be good on that front (am ignoring software upgrade failed as i think this is insignificant. Now could you post the results from downstream and upstream pages, should look a bit like this.

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id :
4
Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : -8.8 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 35.0 dB

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 3
Upstream Frequency : 34000000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 48.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

Also your network icon (next to the clock on the taskbar). Double click on it, what speed does it say you are?

The speed on the network icon varies, as my personal PC is on a wireless network. Currently, it's frequently switching between 24mbps, 36mpbs and 48mbps. Hope that helps.

Again that all looks good, i am now at the end of my technical knowledge, that all seems good. Have youtried changing the wireless channel to either 1,6 or 11 the frequent speed switching could be due to interference

@ lightning89 I am no where near being technically knowledgeable but I can see that your config details confirm that you are on 10Mb and your up/downstream levels are near enough the same as mine when I hit between 7.5 and 8Mb so I am assuming that there's not much wrong there.

Is it possible to connect your PC directly to your modem and try the speed tests again? This should eliminate your wireless connection being the source of your problems.

Thanks for the help/advice guys! Currently, the computer plugged directly into the modem downstairs is buggered since a few days back, so I can't test anything more. I know for a fact that PC gave me the same speeds mind you, I ran all the first speed tests I posted on here via that computer, and got on average 2MB Speed.

Despite it saying I'm on 10MB there, the forum speed checker still says:
'Overall Average Speed = approx 2284 Kbps, 2.23 Mbps'

I'm 100% sure it's not the Wireless Network causing this, as the speed is the same downstairs. It must be as Virgin said, and there's just a 10MB fault in my area. Hopefully they'll get it sorted soon...

Well i have now been upgraded to 10Mb, restarted the modem several times, config. files say 10Mb downstream and 0.5Mb upstream, and yet i am only getting about 3Mb using various speedtest sites.

i called VM helpline and they say my 5 year old "ntl 250" modem should be fine for the 10Mb service.

Is this true? why can i only see download speeds of 3Mb??

is the ntl 250 good enough for this or do i need the new 256 which many of you seem to be getting?

Thanks!

BenMcr 31-07-2009 09:06

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

The 256 is basically the same modem as the 250 - but just without the USB socket.

Hmmm, wonder why i am stuck at 3 Mb then.

i have restarted the modem and computer and wireless router umpteen times!

i must be doing something daft.

back on the phone to VM tonight!

---------- Post added at 11:17 ---------- Previous post was at 10:16 ----------

i wonder if its because i am using my old laptop at home (7 year old Apple Powerbook).

i will take my newer MacBook Pro home tonight and see if it is any better.

Maybe the old lappy has an ancient airport card or something slowing the wireless broadband down??

it seems like the ntl 250 modem is good for 10-20 or even 40Mb!!

(i'm answering my own questions now....!) :D

Pete, according to the new upgrade timetable, Belfast is done!

re-boot your modem, router, computer etc and check speeds.

your "my virgin media" space should show your package as 10Mb.

did you sign up online for the early upgrade??

Sounds like you might have a similar issue to me. Supposed to have 10MB, have an old NTL Modem box, Upstream and Downstream say 10MB is active- however according to the speed tests we're only getting around 3MB.

It has to be Virgin just fannying about. Let us know what becomes of your discussion with them tonight if you're giving them a call! Thanks!

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Well, here's my sorry tale. I received my new modem today. Installed it as per the directions, rang to activate it, told to wait 30 minutes, nothing happened, so I rang back again and spoke to a lady who checked all my settings and told me there was a problem with my drivers, but I saidf that it worked with my old modem and asked to speak to a manager. I then spent over one hour on the phone with him and whilst he was very helpful, he could not solve the problem, so I asked him to re-activate my old modem which he did and I can now connect but can only get just over 5mb so I'll have to settle for that but not very happy about it.

BenMcr 31-07-2009 18:57

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

The new modems are ethernet only so don't need drivers other than for your Ethernet card in the PC (which isn't Virgin's fault)

hansi 01-08-2009 06:37

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

I'm not saying it is Virgin's fault. What I am saying is that I thought I would just be able to connect my new modem, activate it, and that would be it. Buts not so. I have reverted back to my old modem, and whilst there were a few problems in connection, it is now running but not at 10mbs. Just have to accept that.

Sounds easy, doesn't it. Not so. See my post 1038. I spent well over half a day talking to India yesterday and although they activated my new modem, I could not connect, so after an hour or so, I asked them if I could re-connect to my previous modem, which they did, and that became a problem connecting too. But I think it was a problem with the IP address and after a bit of fiddling, I got it going this morning. But I guess I'll have to be happy with 5+ mbs's. At least it's double what I was getting before.

Tech Support can confirm if you are actually on 10Mb if you call them.

Tech Support is open 24/7 on the numbers below.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 option 2 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

This is the best speed I can get, despite VM saying my modem is receiving 10mb. They did send me a new modem as I discussed on a previous post, but that didn't work at all, so I guess I'll have to be satisfied with this.

As it is a fault with your service no

They wouldn't touch your PC - they have tools to make sure the modem is working 100% correctly. I

Well it appears that the modem is working correctly as all the right lights are are on, it just doesn't connect, and I was told that my setting were wrong but I couldn't sort it out from their instructions. Will have to let it be, I suppose.

With all due respect, is there someone in the UK techie department I can speak to. I can barely understand what some of the Indian call centre staff are saying, and please don't call me a racist. I am not, but I find it very difficult to understand them when trying to do what they are telling me.

New Virgin Modem arrived today. Upgraded from the old grey NTL box to a smaller black Virgin Media one. Lady who activated it on the phone was extremely helpful. Think I got her name wrong though, feel bad about that. Anyway, VERY happy camper! : D

Nothing to stop you sending feedback to VM on the service you had from her and asking that she be informed. I am sure when they look at your account her name will be shown as the agent who activated your modem. :)

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

In a drunken state last night I noticed this thread and went to the VM website to register for the 2 - 10 mb upgrade (not available yet in Nottingham where I live but apparently the modem can cope).

Stupid thing to do really seeing as I'm on one of the "lifetime" packages that VM agreed when they lost Sky Basics. Can anyone in a similar situation or with insider knowledge confirm or otherwise whether this will affect this deal?

I really don't want to change the package I'm on as I'm happy with the price and the service I get and have been a bit of a silly billy (as Dennis Healey might have described it).

BenMcr 16-08-2009 14:10

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

It shouldn't matter what discount you have. The BB M 2 - 10Mbit upgrade should not affect them.

squealy 16-08-2009 14:33

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

Thanks Ben. I don't like that "should" word though. I've been with NTL/VM since they first came into the internet market (oh how long I waited for that dialup CD) and know that they can be a little errr, unpredictable. But of course lovable none the less.

BenMcr 16-08-2009 14:40

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

The only reason I say should is that some customers in Area IDs 30/31 (and sometimes in Areas 20-28 as well) ended up with some rather interesting discount combinations which should not be on the account.

So *sometimes* any change on the system will force the incompatible discounts to be removed.

I'm not saying you have as I don't know what discounts you recieve but until the cleanup of those Area IDs is complete it's not a definate unfortunately

Customers in Area 01-18 are always fine

Hi Guys, Just done some speed tests and got this:

BUT on this site ( http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/history/)
I got these:

Date Download Speed Upload Speed
Today 12:55 5814 kbps (727kB/s) 482 kbps (60.3kB/s)
Today 12:49 3707 kbps (463kB/s) 483 kbps (60.4kB/s)

The answer is "Yes,but..."
The upload speed is about right for the 10 Mb/s service but your download speed is low and varying. This might not be VM's fault. I believe one common cause of failing to get 10Mb/s download is problems with a wireless router.

The config file just means that the software didn't need updating on the modem cause the one available is the same as the one that's already on the modem. If you haven't been upgraded then ring CS and they'll send the signal to your modem.

You will have to call 151 to get that sorted out as the is no other way, just ensure that the account holder is present when you call or they will be unable to help you.

Some posts back I mentioned that VM had sent me a new modem to enable me to receive 10mb but even after spending two hours on the phone with a technician, he was still unable to get it to connect, so I have to use my original modem and can only get up to 6mb if I'm lucky. Is there a VM techie on here that I could pm with my account details and ask for an engineer to come out and sort it out for me please?

An engineer will not come out to help you connect the new modem up.

You will need to call Tech Support possibly on Monday after 0800 to get a UK based agent ( unless you get a Scottish agent between now and 10pm ) to try and find out what the issue actually is with the modem.

No one should be taking 2 hours trying to connect a new modem with no resolution, it should have been escalated to another department such as IT.

Just because you are doesn't mean the whole of the Nottingham area is. In any event if people are upgraded then no problem, doubt many people will care that their area isn't showing as complete given that the schedule says 'July to August'.

I guess they could have an 'nffc is upgraded' column in there but that would be silly :D

Areas are also staged rollouts as far as i know (usually over a few hours).failing that phone faults and ask them to check your account settings/resend signals. Both my father and I both had this problem and this was resolved by a quick phonecall

Well what a funny day!!

My internet was on this morning then it went off ...... I did wonder whether our area was being upgraded. Rebooted ... again and again .... no internet. Then realised the TV was off too but the phone had a dial tone. Later on this afternoon phoned 151 and spoke to India and checked settings etc ... all okay ... but then the internet was on ... but my speeds have been 4 ish when I have been getting 9 ish.

Really weird day.

There weren't any faults listed when I could check - but there have been faults before which don't get listed until a couple of days after they exist

Just re-checked my speeds and they are back to normal now !!

Re: Upgrade from 2 - 10 meg

OK, well I waited a bit and didn't get the upgrade to 10mb despite being registered for it. Then I phoned Faults and they said they'd sort it from their end but I should give it 24 hours. It's now coming up to 48 hours and I'm still on 2mb.

Is there some problem getting this upgrade in NG7? I don't really know what to do next.
