Well I just tried a variety of speed tests and the best it came up with was 3984 kbs ,exactly the same as I got on 4 mb service ,I'm not being STM 'd or anythinf and my new upload speed is correct , lucky you live somewhere else .

I'd have to agree with you there!
I've been with VM/NTL for years had excellent service, and until recently was happy to recommend them to anybody. But for several months now the service seems to be deteriorating in this area. Until a few months ago the connection would max out and I got rock-solid download of 480KB/s from newsgroups or other good sources on my 4Mb/s, and 18 mths ago when I was on 10Mb/s it was very unusual not to get rock-solid download of 1.2MB/s from newsgroups or other good sources.

Not anymore! I haven't seen a download max out the connection properly for at least 4-5mths. On 4Mb/s on a good day it hovered around 300-450KB/s, now with the "upgrade" to 10Mb/s I am mostly seeing a very variable 250-800KB/s with occasional peaks to 1MB/s. Even on a multi-thread download I've just completed at 1:30am it didn't go above 800KB/s.

Seems to me I'm seeing evidence that the infrastructure in this area is crumbling under the strain!!!

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

I've been "UPgraided"?? This time last year I was on 4meg's and had a viewable tv/film download and had a reasonable chance of down loading a whole up-grad from Microsoft in one hit but now it takes 3 or 4 attempts and I cant down load a radio show from the BBC or look at "Utube" http://www.speedtest.net/ gives me a down speed of 9,265Kbs and up of 423Kbs but it feels as slow as Smoke signals But this site
http://mvsord.visualware.com/myspeed/db/report?id=873592 Shows much more to the story and to day is a good day, look at http://mvsord.visualware.com/myspeed/db/report?id=871423 for a bad day 7 out of 10 Try the site http://mvsord.visualware.com/myspeed/speedonly.html for your selves

Just finished a 7GB newsgroup download (with 10 connections) at roughly 3.8Mb/s and that speed test informs me that my connection can do 1.71Mb/s.

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

So, they have completed 25 areas in 6 months, thats 4.16 per month, therefore with 24 areas left it will take them another 5.8 months to complete (dec 08).

However, they indicate they will do 6 areas in July, if they kept that up it would take them 4 months which means they would be finished by end of October/early November.

There's a multitude of ways, there's talk of having 20Meg and the new 50Meg on the new EuroDocsis standard which would in effect separate the bandwidth used there away from the 2 and 10 meg users thus freeing up bandwidth there, and I believe changing from QAM64 to QAM256 frees things up too!

Oh and :welcome: to CF :)

Just phoned up customer services to negotiate some money off our bill (my mum was paying £51 pm for services which we got down to £33 pm) to be told that Croydon was on their schedule for July.

Is this true (its not on the website but thats not been updated for a while), or was it a ploy to keep us from going to BT?

Updated to the 8th July.

It says Northampton area complete but I've just rebooted my modem and I'm still on 4mb :( I live in Kettering which I assume comes under that area?

A tracert to VM starts me off here "nrth-t2cam1-b-v115.inet.ntl.com" which I assume is northants.

Can there be a delay from when the web page says updated to the real update ?

TIA,

Dave

That is rather an old modem best to call Tech Support and sse about getting a New one.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

Have now been upgraded in CF11!

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000

I have to say I am very satisfied with that - from problem to resolution in a couple of hours with only a couple of postings to a newsgroup. not bad.

That'd be DOCSIS 3, EuroDOCSIS is what the formerly Cable and Wireless areas fed from Bromley SHE use. Most broadband downstreams are already 256QAM apart from some of the Bromley areas which remain 64QAM but deliver equivalent bandwidth to the 256QAM non-Bromley areas.

ironic seeing as one of the first cable offices was in Dudley!

That is the problem.. Because Dudley was built so long ago the build is such that the areas covered by each Broadband Pipe are massive. (4000 homes per node). So in order to split it down to something more sensible like 1000 or less they have to put new cabinets up and put fibre in the ground etc.. So it takes alot longer to upgrade Dudley than almost anywhere else.

Long time browser, first post,oh hi all too, anyway, have been with NTL/Virgin for going on eight years, and very happy with my internet services.
Started off with dial-up,then proggressed to BB after a couple of years.
Been waiting patiently for the upgrade from 4,to 10 meg.
Have rebooted my modem a number of times over the last 24 hours or so,and no upgrade, all ideas to remedy this situation really appreciated.
I,m in Leicester,LE3 to be more precise,thanks.
BTW,i was using a router, for x-box live, and ps3 live too,but have taken the router out of the equation, and am wired via ethernet directly to the modem, thanks again.

Why would they as there is already a 10Mb tier!

And no, 10Mb users CANNOT get a free upgrade to 20Mb!! :)

No.. Business already upped their Tiers a little while back where they moved everyone that was on lower than 2Mb/s up to 4Mb/s and everyone that was on above 2Mb/s to 10Mb/s.. They have since brought in a 20Mb/s Tier so them's your choices!

If I use the standard Virgin speedtest below I get on average 2.6Mbps and you times that by 8 giving over 20Mb your test site gives me under 10Mb even http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ gives better speeds and Gamefiles is from a dedicated Virgin server.

Have you tried going to this link to check your speeds http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/

click on blueyondergames>demos>then click on at least 2 large files and run them wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running> times them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Some days (6 in 85) the net is running at 21meg on that checker but most of the time its slug mail I have tried using the Y-B-Y and the larger files "Timed Out" the same goes for the two game files down load. Its not only the slowness of the net its the high error rate using the engineering site to down load a 10meg zoneplate image the number of errors make it unusable, the same is true if I thy to have net radio or video, this time last year all this was possible.
Just tested on www.speedtest.bbmax and got the following:
Download Speed 339 kbps (42.4 KB/sec)
Upload Speed 350 kbps (43.8 KB/sec)
Link to result: http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/res...3868&v=4644289
this is not 10meg any more or even the 1meg of five years ago

The difference between our speeds must be regional as I very rarely get exceptionally slow speeds on my connection.

so finally it looks like the baguley people are getting what they want!!!

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Hi,

Completely new...first post.

I live near the city centre in glasgow, I got the free 4mb to 10mb upgrade a few weeks ago.

My main reason for having a broadband connection is online gaming and since the speed upgrade my latency/ping has been garbage making it very difficult to actually play, connection seems to be up/down constantly when playing online games.

It can happily download anything between 500-950kbps and doesnt seem to flux when downloading, just when I'm playing games online.

Seen as I dont have vasts amounts of cash to have a monster gaming pc my altnernative is xbox360; LIVE....Before the upgrade my connection supported good enough gameplay but now its...well like i said garbage.

Any idea's or suggestions ? All appreciated...
:)

CT2kX 17-07-2008 14:34

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

if your not getting any issues on ur pc and only on the 360, it could be xbox live itself, but i dont own a 360 so i have no idea about the various settings it has for networking.

anybody?

johnnykiller 17-07-2008 14:54

Re: Virgin 4Mb to upgrade to 10Mb February - Summer

Thanks for replying...

I know what you mean, LIVE itself does suffer from issues but my brother lives in the next street, he's on Tiscali and has no issues whatsoever....When I use his xbox at his place the connection is so fast its scary, and when he comes over to mine, he moans all night that my connection is crap.

As said downloading seems ok...I'm thinking its got something to do with the speed upgrade its like the connection has gained speed but somehow lost quality ???

my ps3 is awesome with my broadband...never lags and it downloads demos in minutes...quality i tell you and its free unlike other services i know cough***xbox live***cough...haha only joking

Am in Baguley area and can definitely see a change in speed but not what I was expecting. Using multiple NNTP streams my 4Meg connection always maxxed out as 480k/s but now with supposedly a 10Meg connection it's maxxing out at 700K/s and speedtests report between 5.5 and 6 Meg downstream speed. So, not sure what that's all about. Last time when I went from 2Meg to 4Meg I noticed very little difference in downstream speed originally but it turned out that was due to Zone Alarm (since removed) throttling the speed for some reason.

I access the internet through the set top box, At the moment i get a flawless 4mb with a good ping to my online game server, I only really play on one. What i want to know is how will i be able to tell when i have been upgraded. I can't do the 192.168.1.1 thing to find anything about my modem as it is a stb. I believe the Samsung box is capable of around 6mb which in all honesty is fast enough as i don't bother downloading stuff just use the net and games. We have stopped using the STB for TV and was wondering could i cancel the box as it costs extra tenner or something but still be connected to internet or shall i just take a chance and say i want modem and please take the box away.??

I only ask this now because my area is not yet upgraded CH42 wirral and am concerned in case they disconnect me from the stb and the modem is not as good.

You would be better calling up Customer Services and asking for an upgrade to a Stand Alone Cable Modem as with your present Samsung box you can only receive 6Mb but with a SACM you can upgrade if you wanted to 20Mb, plus you would get a better connection.

The should be quite happy to upgrade you as the company would prefer all customers to swap to SACM.

Call Customer Care not Faults because they would have to transfer you as they cannot change your account.

Customer Care - 150 (Options 1 then 3)

Hi

Its a wired network at my place...i'm still thinking its the connection rathern than my set up, it worked more or less ok when i used the 4mb but now with the 10mb its sh*t...

However, downloading and streaming is far better...

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues with online gaming ? LIVE ?

It appears that the Wirral has finally, although still listed as TBC, been upgraded to 10mb. Well done Virgin. My comp seems to be sailing along quite merrily at 9.2mb download speed (for now).
