I just called my boss and said "sod this for a game of soldiers" I'm staying home as there is at least 3" outside and still snowing, and as I live on a hill I'm not attempting it.

The only car that got up my hill was a 4x4, others have tried and failed.

What is it about Britain? The tiniest little bit of snow and everyone's skiving off work and the schools shut. Typical teachers, all Trotskyites. Churchill wouldn't have stood for this.

[OK, I don't *really* think that, but I thought I'd save someone the effort. More snow than I've ever seen in London (7 inches I reckon) and the nipper is getting dressed by himself at 8am to drag me out into it. Sometimes the ability to work from home is a nuisance]

Quite amusing how Londonites were interviewed on the news this morning seemingly under the impressing that the fact there's snow in their city means the UK has finally had the white stuff for the first time in years :D

Yes, but I can't find the key to the patio door. And at that time I was still in my dressing gown (not a pretty sight).

I did end up walking to work. Only problem was the heavy coat and boots were in the car. There is numpty me out there in 8" of snow in my slippers, shovelling snow off the boot so I could retrieve the kit. Then I remembered I'd brought the boots indoors some three weeks earlier :dunce:

The other week we had a little snow but got through to take our son to school. We found out later that one of his classmates was kept home 'because of the bad weather and the roads'. Except that we have to drive twice as far as his mother does to get to school, and we drive past his front door. :erm: I think for some people it's an excuse for a day off, or just to not go out, as nobody ever seems to question you when you say you're snowed in.

We had a dusting overnight and it has snowed on and off all day, but the weather is mostly sunny and it's thawing faster than its falling.

Here's a good question for you all, with all the snow expected last night, and today, did anyone see any gritters out, I live in Twickenham, and haven't seen any, in fact if gritters were out last, why was there such a bad travel today, with cars and lorries getting stuck, I was under the impression, that authorities know 24 hours before if there is any bad weather, so why the problem today.

Re: [Merged] Snow!

It thawed enough last night to reduce our coverage to around 8" from 10+" thick. However the overnght frost has made the side roads and paths extremely slippery even though most busier roads seem OK. Most have made it to the office today, with a notable eceptioin so far of one of the bosses. On the other hand if you had a Porshe, would you try driving in ice, they are uncontrollable at the best of times :erm: They can't even be bothered to get the trains running properly, or even at all on the local line, and the schools remains shut, maybe he's got a good excuse.

Now to see what happens as temperatures rise a bit. There's a hint of the occasional flurry, but nothing that's going to make any difference. Indeed it's so sunny out there you need protection from the glare.

We're told this lot has cost the economy a small fortune. We're also told that we can't plan for a once in 20 years event. But the reality is that every time it snows or get's freezing cold things grind to a halt. We aren't a third world country (although the way Gordon Brown is spending our money propping things up we could well become one when he bankrupts us), so we should be able to do better, especially when one looks at the balance sheet of losses versus expenditure.

Re: [Merged] Snow!

It'sd probably the bounce off the flash.

Chris 03-02-2009 10:57

Re: [Merged] Snow!

The sign has definitely caught the camera flash, and has then fallen victim to the fairly high degree of JPEG compression that has been applied to the picture.

Well, it took two hours (thanks to South Eastern's farcical attempt at running a Railway), but I got in to work.

Why is it that the public transport systems in London failed totally to cope with this? Boris Johnson and the various Transport authorities have blamed the snow, but I am fairly certain that the old, nationalised, transport companies (like British Rail) actually managed to cope with things like this..

Answer 1)
Pay a lot more in taxes and ticket prices for the equipment to deal with these rare occurrences.

Answer 2)
Accept that these things happen from time to time and adapt to cope with them.

We've had Snow a few times in Winter over the last two or three years. Not frequent, but not rare either. Besides, hasn't yesterday's shutdown been estimated to have cost the Economy about £3 billion? That's more than enough to pay for a few snow ploughs..

Well that was a fun time, got caught in a blizzard on the foreshore, now the tops of my fingers are tingling. Kept taking the gloves off to take photo's.
When I got home I found five inches of snow in the side pockets of my backpack. :D

Well brilliant sunshine and most of the snow has melted.

However looking at the Hampshire animated weather maps, more snow is forecast this pm..

Well - I just tried going out in it. The sunlight has made it all far to bright for me so I needed my cane (which i dropped in my new not yet set kitchen floor whilst retrieving) I got to the end of the road before I fell on my bum.

Nuts to it, I think I'm staying in 'till it's all gone. :(

I slipped on my back pretty badly this morning. Was alking slowly too, went up in the air and flat on my back. My glasses flew off. I was in a daze. To make matters worse a woman behind me slipped on the same spot and fell on my glasses, luckily they are only bent and not snapped.

My head still hurts, as does the back of my shoulders.

to make matters worse my daughter just phoned me crying because birds had eaten the eyes out of my snowman. that will teach me to use cherries to give my snowman a manic look lol.

Those two had been up since 2am building it, I know the snowman's name is Clive but I forgot to ask them their names. I blame the cold slowing down what passes for my mind.

This will make you laugh, where I work they had a gritter come round putting loads of grit.

5 minutes later a snow plough came round and cleared the snow and grit.

I was also this by a woman at work.

A teacher at her daughters slipped on the snow and knocked herself out, the head saw this and went running to her aid he also slipped and landed on her (a scene that was described looking like a prono movie) breaking his wrist in the process.

Well, we seem to be finally getting some significant snowfall here. Only problem is, we had a very wet day yesterday followed by a cloudless night and the ground is now frozen hard. The snow is sticking and building up very quickly. We could be in a spot of bother here ... :disturbd:

All my snow is gone :(
1 day then the rain washed it all away, now it's really cold and icy.
