Re: [Merged] Snow!
I just called my boss and said "sod this for a game of soldiers" I'm staying home as there is at least 3" outside and still snowing, and as I live on a hill I'm not attempting it.
The only car that got up my hill was a 4x4, others have tried and failed. |

What is it about Britain? The tiniest little bit of snow and everyone's skiving off work and the schools shut. Typical teachers, all Trotskyites. Churchill wouldn't have stood for this.
[OK, I don't *really* think that, but I thought I'd save someone the effort. More snow than I've ever seen in London (7 inches I reckon) and the nipper is getting dressed by himself at 8am to drag me out into it. Sometimes the ability to work from home is a nuisance] |
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Quite amusing how Londonites were interviewed on the news this morning seemingly under the impressing that the fact there's snow in their city means the UK has finally had the white stuff for the first time in years :D
And lots of it in South Wales too :D |

More snow overnight here in sth Manchester. Just been out to check our roof and despite it being lovely and warm inside the house the roof is showing no signs of heat loss and still has a nice even snow blanket.
On a slightly off topic topic. Cable Forum city has had a very high snow fall and anyone who can spare a moment might consider clicking on the following link to help us get enough bodies to sweep the pavements..... http://cable-forum.myminicity.com/ |

It's settling everywhere but the road so getting to and from places isn't too bad. It's going to be chaos tomorrow when everything freezes though :erm: |

Re: [Merged] Snow!
My back garden looks like a film set, with real snow, its about 5 inches thick.

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Kids are going mad here.
They're whizzing down the slope at the top of the kiddie playground across the road on teatrays, plastic bags and even a few sledges.. That's the slope with a considerable number of mature trees. It's got to end in tears.. |

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Here's a good question for you all, with all the snow expected last night, and today, did anyone see any gritters out, I live in Twickenham, and haven't seen any, in fact if gritters were out last, why was there such a bad travel today, with cars and lorries getting stuck, I was under the impression, that authorities know 24 hours before if there is any bad weather, so why the problem today.
|
Re: [Merged] Snow!
No road appear to have been gritted near me.
|
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Hats off to the gritters in North Lanarkshire. They've been round on a very regular basis and they do all side streets too.
|
Re: [Merged] Snow!
I'm hoping it will snow some more tonight.

Re: [Merged] Snow!
bah - we have had no more snow. the street sweepers did appear at 7am after me sweeping the pavement, but I did have to ask them to do the path next to the shops (duh) as opposed to the one just around the square
gritters did appear yesterday afternoon and did the rounds several times, but by the time I went to work at 5.30pm there was no evidence of it at all!? maybe they had a blockage or had run out of grit, |
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Looks like we had a heavy fall overnight, off out to take some photo's, sunrise in 30 minutes. :D
|
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Another inch overnight..and some schools off the closed list and some added.
However it's supposedly snowing in Rowner which is the other side of Gosport.. Crazy... |
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Nothing overnight here, and most of the snow from yesterday is gone.
The sun's out, and it's a bright new day :) |
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Just taken a look at the closed schools list..all bar one of the town's secondary schools are closed.Well that answers why I'm not getting any offers of work...Not that I'd have an easy job of getting anywhere with no transport.:erm:

The first pic is what we had yesterday, the blueish one was taken earlier this morning. |
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Oh bum it's snowing again.5 minutes ago it was sunny...:(
|
Re: [Merged] Snow!
It thawed enough last night to reduce our coverage to around 8" from 10+" thick. However the overnght frost has made the side roads and paths extremely slippery even though most busier roads seem OK. Most have made it to the office today, with a notable eceptioin so far of one of the bosses. On the other hand if you had a Porshe, would you try driving in ice, they are uncontrollable at the best of times :erm: They can't even be bothered to get the trains running properly, or even at all on the local line, and the schools remains shut, maybe he's got a good excuse.
Now to see what happens as temperatures rise a bit. There's a hint of the occasional flurry, but nothing that's going to make any difference. Indeed it's so sunny out there you need protection from the glare. We're told this lot has cost the economy a small fortune. We're also told that we can't plan for a once in 20 years event. But the reality is that every time it snows or get's freezing cold things grind to a halt. We aren't a third world country (although the way Gordon Brown is spending our money propping things up we could well become one when he bankrupts us), so we should be able to do better, especially when one looks at the balance sheet of losses versus expenditure. |

|
Re: [Merged] Snow!
It'sd probably the bounce off the flash.
|
Re: [Merged] Snow!
The sign has definitely caught the camera flash, and has then fallen victim to the fairly high degree of JPEG compression that has been applied to the picture.

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Well, it took two hours (thanks to South Eastern's farcical attempt at running a Railway), but I got in to work.
Why is it that the public transport systems in London failed totally to cope with this? Boris Johnson and the various Transport authorities have blamed the snow, but I am fairly certain that the old, nationalised, transport companies (like British Rail) actually managed to cope with things like this.. |

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Answer 1)
Pay a lot more in taxes and ticket prices for the equipment to deal with these rare occurrences. Answer 2) Accept that these things happen from time to time and adapt to cope with them. |

We've had Snow a few times in Winter over the last two or three years. Not frequent, but not rare either. Besides, hasn't yesterday's shutdown been estimated to have cost the Economy about £3 billion? That's more than enough to pay for a few snow ploughs.. |

Re: [Merged] Snow!
Well brilliant sunshine and most of the snow has melted.
However looking at the Hampshire animated weather maps, more snow is forecast this pm.. |
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Well - I just tried going out in it. The sunlight has made it all far to bright for me so I needed my cane (which i dropped in my new not yet set kitchen floor whilst retrieving) I got to the end of the road before I fell on my bum.
Nuts to it, I think I'm staying in 'till it's all gone. :( |

I slipped on my back pretty badly this morning. Was alking slowly too, went up in the air and flat on my back. My glasses flew off. I was in a daze. To make matters worse a woman behind me slipped on the same spot and fell on my glasses, luckily they are only bent and not snapped.
My head still hurts, as does the back of my shoulders. to make matters worse my daughter just phoned me crying because birds had eaten the eyes out of my snowman. that will teach me to use cherries to give my snowman a manic look lol. ---------- Post added at 16:00 ---------- Previous post was at 15:58 ---------- Quote:

Re: [Merged] Snow!
I was also this by a woman at work.
A teacher at her daughters slipped on the snow and knocked herself out, the head saw this and went running to her aid he also slipped and landed on her (a scene that was described looking like a prono movie) breaking his wrist in the process. |
Re: [Merged] Snow!
Well, we seem to be finally getting some significant snowfall here. Only problem is, we had a very wet day yesterday followed by a cloudless night and the ground is now frozen hard. The snow is sticking and building up very quickly. We could be in a spot of bother here ... :disturbd:
