I presume you are referring to Bromley in Kent, rather than the areas in the UK that are served from the Bromley headend?

If you read the rest of the thread, you will see that a simple call to Customer Services, choosing option 5 usually does the trick. If you have a Standalone Cable Modem then you can even do it online.

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

Upgraded here in Watford (750k to 2M). Two interesting points:

1. When I was on 750k, the CM diagnostics showed a downstream speed of 750000 bps. After upgrading I was expecting to see 2000000, but was pleasantly surprised to see that it's 2048000.

2. This round of speed upgrades seems have been organised much more smoothly than the previous round last year (when my 600k went up to 750k). The web-based upgrade did exactly what it said on the tin - something we're not used to getting from NTL. Well done!

I upgraded my line yesterday via the weblink. I've found out this morning that the connections now down. I've got the missus to reboot the modem a couple of times in the past couple of hours, but nothing!!! Is anyone else in the Loughboruogh area and working OK? Or can anyone from CS tell me if there is a problem as there is nothing on the NTLWorld site to say that there is...

Very nice man on tech support but there's clearly some anatomical identification problem going on at NTL (I'm think @rses/elbows) as CS said they couldn't do the upgrade and TS say they have to do the upgrade! Don't blame the people on the phones but internal comms seem to be a bit haphazard.

So..... back to CS!

Nope, they are doing away with the 1.5meg service. A week ago, that would have been true, but doesn't apply more, so I think he should pay more attention to his company memos ;)

Some of that "confusion" may be caused because NTL may be trying to upgrade customers by area or modem type or a combination of the two. If that is the case then the NTL staff may have been instructed to only upgrade customers if they are in the areas that should have been upgraded. Of course, some of us may have found ways to sidetrack the system. :D

Some are quick to call the NTL staff if they don't give what is being asked but we don't know what instructions those staff have been given.

If nothing else, this thread has provided many examples of customers getting through to NTL on the telephone with no wait involved. That means that either NTL have vastly improved their customer service operation or the often reported very long queues were a bit of a myth.

All I can say is "Well done NTL, you gave us what you promised and on time". NTL is delivering a service that most ADSL companies cannot match.

Wonder how many NTL customers have jumped ship as a result of getting these unbelievably low speeds with an hint of a cap? :)

Well it took me 3 tries via CS and finally it went through. Modem rebooted automatically 10 minutes after the call. WOW - That was easy.....

Got home last night...
Choose "upgrade your speed" from the webpage.
Went through a couple of windows.
Was told I now had 2Mb broadband.
Went to dslreports......which confirmed a download rate of over 1800kbps.

No waiting, no reboots....

Not often I say this...."Well done NTL"

Wow !!!
Well I've just phoned up NTL and got through straight away. No holding messages, just got through straight after pressing the menu options.
I've been told I've been upgraded and it will now take upto 24 hours to go through but could be sooner.
I cant wait !!!
She also mentioned that I dont need to reboot the cable modem so can just leave it on.

Asking about the 3gb cap and what happens if we go over, she said that you would be warned if you go over the top and it wouldnt allow you and would block you once you reach it. Hmmm, find that hard to believe.
Anyway, all in all, its looking good.

it is my belief that you would need to reboot the modem to get the new config files immediately, otherwise you could be on the same tier for hours waiting for the modem to receive the new config file

Re: New Speed Upgrades 8th March. (Part 3)

Don't know if this has already been posted but...
From http://www.ntlworld.com/service_update.html

Quote:

Your Questions

1. What does the 1 Giga Byte limit mean in practical terms?

As a rough guide, 1 gigabyte of data per day is approximately:
- 100 large software programs
- 200 music tracks
- 650 short videos
- 10,000 pictures
- 20,000 web pages
- And should not impact gaming applications at all

For a more specific guide, there are a number of freeware applications that approximately monitor data download. We will be looking to distribute and ntl-approved monitor shortly. In the meantime, however, customers need not be too concerned: NTL will be in touch and able to provide advice if you regularly exceed the limit for your speed of service.

2. Can higher speed broadband customers have a higher daily download limit?

In response to the strong customer enquiry we got on this point, we will be investigating whether we can provide variable limits based on service speed. We expect to have an answer soon.

It should be noted, however, that some customers confused our 1 Giga Byte limit with their kilo Bit speeds. 1 Giga Byte is equivalent to 8 Giga Bits.

Also, in practical terms the slower speeds of the overall Internet often cause average speeds to be lower than the maximum speed allowed. Thus users could have several more actual hours of downloads than would be indicated by strictly dividing the limit by the speed.

3. How flexible will ntl be about these new limits?

We will be very flexible. Our objective is only to limit very frequent or persistent heavy network use that can impact other customers. Therefore we will ONLY contact customers who exceed the daily data limit for three or more days in any consecutive 14-day period.

If you occasionally exceed your data limit, it will not be a problem. Remember our goal is to give freedom and easy usage to our customers. This rule ensures that you have peace of mind and that we are able to reduce the unfair prolonged usage by a small number.

4. When and how will the limits be applied?

For the next 60 days, NTL will monitor network usage and only contact customers who exceed the limit as described above. Our aim is not to disturb customers; rather, our goal is to make customers aware so that they may change their usage patterns if possible. If we successfully alter the usage patterns, there would be no further need for any other adjustments.

5. Will customers be disconnected if they use more than the given limit?

No. Our customers are important to us. We will simply advise customers how to moderate their bandwidth usage. Our research has shown that consumers will be happy with this approach.

6. Is there a plan for very 'power users' who exceed the given limits?

We are considering a range of new services especially for customers who want or need to download large amounts of data - but which will avoid impacting other, ordinary customers.

Other questions

Q. Why was there no announcement of this change of policy?

A. Only a few of our customers will be affected by this change, and we plan to communicate with each of them individually.

Q. Why do you advertise an 'unlimited' service, and yet now seek to limit its use?

A. Our unmetered dial-up Internet service has the trade name 'Unlimited', because you can use it whenever you like for a single flat fee. There is no daily download limit on our dial-up Internet products. Our broadband service is no longer called unlimited.

Our broadband service has always carried an Acceptable Use Policy.

Q. Does a daily download limit constrain the amount of time I spend online?

A. No, not necessarily. You could surf the web all day and download very little data. The average broadband internet customer downloads less than 100 megabytes (0.1 gigabyte) of data per day.

Q. What activities could result in exceeding the daily download limit?

A. Downloading very large video files or audio files continuously from newsgroups or file-sharing services like Kazaa, is the most common cause of very high data usage.

Q. How can I tell how much data I've downloaded in any given day?

A. As a rough guide, 1 gigabyte of data is approximately 200 music tracks, 650 short videos, 10,000 pictures or around 100 large software programmes. For a more specific guide, there are a number of freeware applications that approximately monitor data download. However, customers need not be too concerned: NTL will be in touch and able to provide advice if you regularly exceed the limit for your speed of service.

1st 128K took 550 ms = 238313 Bytes/sec = approx 1983 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 550 ms = 238313 Bytes/sec = approx 1983 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 600 ms = 218453 Bytes/sec = approx 1818 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 550 ms = 238313 Bytes/sec = approx 1983 kbits/sec

Yet some downloads i get 90-120kps. Any help?

Because 1024k = 1Mb so x2 = 2048k ;)

Why precisely would anyone want to do that? The only drivers on the disk are the USB drivers so the best advice would really be to get rid of USB and use an ethernet connection.

This thread is massive - so excuse me if I am asking a question that is already been answered (but I have looked 1st!).

I'm on 750K, and I guess will soon be on 2MB

Question - Do I just sit back and wait for the upgrade to occur automatically (as per the NTL web site), OR do I need to ring up, or visit some web-page to make it happen?

the official line from ntl is that ntl customers will automatically get speed increases in the coming weeks and you need to do nothing about these upgrades however...

you can do it online by visiting the tier migration page....
http://www.ntlworld.com/data-feeds/e...tierMigration/

or contact customer services and see who answers the phone

officially the csr's are advised that these speed upgrades are for new customers and that existing customers will automatically get the speed upgrades... however as you have noticed a lot of csr's seem to be upgrading customers anyway (which really is a bad customer experience as you have noticed with some being upgraded and some being told to wait :( )

Just got the 3Mbit upgrade there. Had to phone CS for it because my connection is "not appropriate for an online upgrade" apparently.

I rang cs and got told I have to wait and it will be automatic, he said next few days.

Good side was I got through almost straight away, bad side was they wouldn't upgrade me, bit of a 2 class CS it seems, some will do it some won't - not impressed :(

the problem is that those that are saying no are following the procedure that has been told to them as these upgrades are supposed to be automatic and is not the csr's fault

but i agree all in all a bad customer service experience :( as some are then allowing you to do this bit of a CSR lottery :(
