Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Trust me, I'm as big an England fan as anyone, but Russ has got a point. While I don't think that we've got a rubbish team, you have to take into account the fact that we just don't seem to perform - look at the recent (appalling) match against Sweden :( .

One of the problems that England has is that, unfortunately, since Shearer retired, we haven't had anybody who scores enough - Owen is a great player but, unless you team him with another goal scorer, it just doesn't happen (and apologies to Heskey fans but, until Sven decides where to play him, either up front or on the wing, he won't get any better).

As it stands, I would say that England have maybe 3 world class players in Beckham, Gerrard and Owen and, particularly until we sort out the left wing (Gareth Barry anyone?), teams like France and Italy will continue to beat us (although, to be honest, I wouldn't fear the Germans right now).

By contrast, the Welsh national team has some fantastically gifted players (Giggs, Savage (although I hate him), Bellamy, Speed etc) and actually seem to play more like a team - let's face it, it's almost universally accepted that Wales are one of the best teams who haven 't qualified for the tournaments for decades.

The problem is with the Welsh FA who couldn't organise the proverbial drink-up, whereas England have got the backing of the FA, and have some truly exceptional players, so where's it going wrong?

Well Wales may still get there, very slim chance but it would be fantastic if they did. article

Just noticed the Russian players name. A good job he wasn't Welsh, he could have been called, Ivor Titov.:D

I'd be very surprised if the Welsh FA succeed with the appeal - if I remember correctly, Titov was suspended anyway when he tested positive (or at least he wasn't playing at the time), so I can't really see how these grounds would work.

I think it's a shame though, as I said in my earlier post, Wales are probably the most gifted team not to have qualified.

BTW - Ivor Titov???

Russ 29-04-2004 17:57

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

I really hope the appeal fails. I want my national team to get to Portugal on merit, not a technicality.

The answer is - Here :)

Technically there is only one team left in the prem from Lancashire since Bolton and The 2 Manchesters are in Greater Manchester and the 2 Liverpools are in Merseyside leaving Blackburn. :)

Teeside - ask Paulyoung666, when you've stopped fighting over Viduka ;)

<edit> actually I'm very confused now, I looked at Julian's link & went off to try to find a few others, the conclusion I came to is that the way the 'counties' have been mucked about with makes finding the correct information very hard.

- round here we went from Lincolnshire to Humberside & then to North East Lincolnshire, although the Police & Fire Services are still Humberside

- so Julian's link looks like the answer, unless any one has any other info - Paulyoung666, Handyman, Bopdude, where are you, help :erm: :D

- and just to say Grimsby Town still could go down, even after winning their last home game, today. Having the worst goal difference doesn't help us much here :(

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Wow, Leeds finally did go down. Shame but a lesson for clubs who think they can do a Man united and buy a team. Man united still have a good manager and the abitly to spend. Arsenal have spent the least out of the top 7 teams in the premiership over the last few years and they won. Chelsea spent millions upon millions and they didn't. It takes more than money to win the title or in some cases a good manager with a eye to talent requires no money :)

Leeds tried to buy there way to the top and down they go.

Well the vast majority of people never wanted those stupid regional changes to council and municipal boundaries and names, so as far as I and the massive majority of people are concerned we have always lived in Lancashire, those six teams are still and always have been in Lancashire. The Lancashire County Cricket team play matches in Manchester & Liverpool.
That also means that historically Middlesbrough are in Yorkshire, no true Yorkshireman would ever recognise government imposed border tinkering, once a Tyke, always a Tyke.

I agree Jim. My wife comes from a town( the biggest one in Britain allegedly) which has been swallowed up by Greater Manchester - she is a Lancashire lass tho' :)

Good Ol' Arsenal

Quote:

Arsenal had to face Chelsea just three days after taking on Manchester United in the last four of the FA Cup.

Gunners boss Wenger says an approach to the Football Association from his club to avoid a repeat has been successful.

"The FA has promised it will change the fixtures and not put the Cup semi-final in front of the Champions League quarter-finals," Wenger revealed.

"I made them aware that it was a mistake as you would be disadvantaged in the Champions League.

"David Dein (vice-chairman of the Gunners and the FA) has told me they will move it. It makes a big change that they have listened to me!"

Obviously it pays to have someone on the inside pulling strings :erm:

You know thats a perfectly good cause many other teams have pointed this out.

Why is it people keep trying to discredit us whenever we win something. We won because we where the best this season and we didn't even have to spend anything near the amount Chelsea and man u do

If you want to keep taking away from arsenal victory can you at least provide some actual reasons?

It's called DOUBLE STANDARDS - now that Arsenal seem to have thrown together a decent side, they want all the things United have wanted over the last 10 years, such as consessions from the FA to ease fixture congestion.

Football at that speed is a lot more physically demanding than it looks on TV. You go watch a match live and see the speeds and the fouls its quite hard. It would tire you out. and we have wanted less fixture congestion for a while now, we where one of the leading teams to try and get a christmas break and we wanted this long before man u did

And no russ and yesman thats not actually what happened but its often changed to suit man united when they need to complain about us. for a start this applies to ALL teams not just arsenal and we are not asking for a huge change that man united wanted for gods sake chelsea dont do this they accepted your win and admitted we deserved to win. Bloody bad losers

I very much doubt that he will allow "facts" to be considered. After all he thinks that winning a trophy 3 times makes it "Our Trophy", yet winning it 8 times, once whilst winning the FA Cup & Champions League at the same time is somehow conveniently forgotton.:erm:

It is all relative, training, treatment, diet etc are all vastly improved these days, but to say that players are too tired to play 90 minutes of football every three days is a load of Ball Kocks. I work six days a week and even though I am the wrong side of 50, still play 3 or 4 games of squash to a decent standard every week.
you may be too tired, but I would certainly not be.:Sprint:

Spurs win the FA Challenge Cup to become the only non-League club, following the formation of the Football League in 1888, ever to achieve this honour.

Right, these should be fairly easy..

Question 1
There are currently 3 clubs within the football league with the letter "x" in their name, who are they ?

Question 2
There is one football club who have never been relegated from top flight football. Which Club ? (this includes the premiership and the old division 1)

I won't be back on here until this evening, but I am assuming you will have posted the correct answers by then.

1. Oxford United and Wrexham are 2 of them - I'm guessing that you're including the Conference as part of the league, which would also include Exeter :)

Two of your teams are correct, and no the conference is not part of it, so there is one more in the Football League.

I won't be back on here until this evening, but I am assuming you will have posted the correct answers by then.

I believe the answer to No: 2 is arsenal

I think it is arsenal, We have always been there. In fact i think it was us and everton which where the main makers of a 1st division national league

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Why do we only have one topic for football? I mean lets be honest football is huge and I am sure there are people who want too talk more in depth.

Arsenal must have had friends in high places that long ago, they were actually promoted to Division 1 in 1919 (I think) after only finishing fifth in Division 2, but it was decided that they should be promoted as a reward for their long service to the league.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

Not exactly we founded the 1st division along with a few other clubs and so we put ourselves in there along with those teams. It was nothing to do with a reward.

FACT UPDATE:

We have been relegated, in 1913 i believe. But where soon back up in 1919 as the 1st division was to be expanded and arsenal where chosen to go into there instead of spurs.

We are the only team to be in the premiership without being promoted there.

So I dont know which team has never gone down but i am guessing everton now

You what??? And its usually Man Utd fans accused of knowing nothing about their teams history!

The founding clubs are Preston North End, Bolton Wanderers, Everton, Burnley, Accrington, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Notts County, Derby County and Stoke.
The league was founded in 1888.

Arsenal, or Woolwich Arsenal as I think they were called then, were elected to the second divison in 1893.

I corrected myself in the later post.

They should have called it the Lancashire and Midlands league, no sign of any southern jessies back then.;)

Hmmm - that article says:

Quote:

In 1919 Arsenal were controversially elected to the expanded First Division, precedent suggested that Tottenham should have retained their place in the new set-up. However the machinations of Henry Norris meant the new place was awarded to Arsenal instead.
I found this on www.thegooner.com:

Quote:

On the 6th of September 1913, Arsenal played their first game at the new ground of Highbury. The ground was not yet fully prepared and funds for the new ground were short. The builder of the stand took a cut of gate receipts to pay for its construction. The match was against Leicester Fosse, which we won 2-1, with goals from Andy Devine and George Jobey. For the next two seasons Arsenal came close to regaining first division status but then came World War One. Many players went back to munitions work whilst others joined up to fight. When football resumed after the war in September 1919 the football league decided to increase the number of teams from 20 to 22. Usually in a case such as this the two teams who should have been relegated would retain their place and the top two from the lower division would go up to make up the numbers. Norris however sat on the Management Committee and managed to persuade the committee members to vote Spurs (bottom of Division One) down and Arsenal (only 5th in Division Two) up. This further fueled the rivalry between the two sets of supporters. The reason given was that Arsenal had been in the league for longer than Spurs.
I remember reading about this in the Sunday paper a few weeks ago - it basically shows that the only reason Arsenal were promoted instead of Spurs was because of Norris' backhanders, bribes and potential blackmail

Oh well - anybody else want to accuse Arsenal of dodgy dealing with the FA :naughty: ;)

I agree that we where lucky to get picked but that was a year after the first would war its quite a while ago ya know

Russ 04-05-2004 14:39

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

So they got in through corruption....and according to this, a team like the Arse could have success which owes a lot to corruption too.

Re: [Merged] - Football talk

How on earth does that apply to arsenal?!

How on earth can you say we are successful though corruption? We won because we played excellent football. If you remember its man united who got in trouble recently for dealing with agents not Arsenal. We never have enough money to spend loads on players

Stop trying to discredit Arsenal, are you man united fans? Before you say we benfited from that agents what about this

Just chill!

If you've read the article (which I assume you have), it's saying that any number of clubs could potentially be using 'corrupt' methods when it comes to new players.

It doesn't matter which team you support - I support Villa, and there were allegations against John Gregory when he was manager - at the end of the day, until transfers are made completely openly, there always the chance that someone's going to try to make a fast buck.

Here is a interesting question... I can only get two, don't know if there even is a third!...

Name three players who have won the European Championship, European Cup, Premiership and FA Cup, and who also played in the Premiership during 2002/03 season.
