From a purely selfish perspective, I do hope not...I don't particularly want it!

Nonetheless I have to say that ntl still never lets me down on any of the three services, TV, broadband or phone. As I have not worked for them for over 15 months I can safely say that's unbiased now!

Upgraded in Bournemouth from 2MB to 4MB a couple of days ago and I think that connections suffered for a couple of days as I had lots of problems. Seems stable now though and am getting reasonable speeds though must admit it's hard to perceive the difference when browsing. However, downloading files shows a good speed increase and running the speed test at top of page gives the results below.

Mon, 26 Jun 2006 18:13:18 UTC

1st 512K took 374 ms = 1369 KB/sec, approx 11281 Kbps, 11.02 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1016 ms = 503.9 KB/sec, approx 4152 Kbps, 4.05 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1062 ms = 482.1 KB/sec, approx 3973 Kbps, 3.88 Mbps
4th 512K took 1062 ms = 482.1 KB/sec, approx 3973 Kbps, 3.88 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 5845 Kbps, 5.71 Mbps

Can anyone explain the abnormally high first reading though. I thought it a mistake but running direct from the server and performing at different times during the day all give a high first test reading. Because of this it artificially inflates my overall speed tp 5.71 Mbps, any thoughts.

Thanks
Tony

Hi
No upgrade as of today here in Basingstoke.
on, 26 Jun 2006 18:33:05 UTC
1st 512K took 2156 ms = 237.5 KB/sec, approx 1957 Kbps, 1.91 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2172 ms = 235.7 KB/sec, approx 1942 Kbps, 1.9 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2156 ms = 237.5 KB/sec, approx 1957 Kbps, 1.91 Mbps
4th 512K took 2172 ms = 235.7 KB/sec, approx 1942 Kbps, 1.9 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1950 Kbps, 1.9 Mbps

Oh, give me strength... are you STILL harping on about not wanting an upgrade??!!!!

I wouldn't mind, but change is inevitable... if NTL stayed slow then everyone would eventually go to ADSL, end of story, then they would go out of business and where would your connection be then??? Or... they could stay as they are and wait til the competition is on 100meg and make the jump then... if you think THIS is causing problems, see what the jump from 2 to 100 would do!!!

Please, come up with some reasoned argument or alternative and I will listen, but stop posting the same cr*p about "I don't want it", we're sick of hearing it!

Yours,

Mr Stroppy of Harrogate (still on 2 meg!) ;)

We did this one the other night didn't we? :Yikes:

I am no luddite, and I appreciate that that many people DO need faster speeds, and it is wholly right that ntl are providing them.

What I don't understand is why existing customers MUST be upgraded even if they don't need to be. From reading the experiances of others, this risks changing my rock solid stable 2mb connection into an unstable fluctuating connection that's faster some days than others, assuming it works at all. That would be no good to me.

I'd rather have the ability to 'opt out' and keep my current speed. Then, if I need it to be faster in the future, I can ask for it. I would even be happy to pay a small admin fee to upgrade in this 'bespoke' way should it be required.

The point I'm making is that if they upgraded everyone else in your area but not you then you will experience the same issues as if you upgraded too... all the upgrade will do is change a config file on your modem, nothing else, so I just don't see how you expect that your service will be any more or less stable? If you have a stable connection at 2 you will have a stable connection at 4.... if not then it is another issue, not "your upgrade".

Not being funny here but do you actually understand the underlying technology here...??

I never made a sweeping statement but the guy who said ntl have far less users did.

Yes...I worked at ntl for four years.

I know enough to know that things that shouldn't be possible do go wrong. And I also learned the hard way, from dealing with so many customers' issues....if it ain't broke don't even TOUCH it!!

My modem is also an old 120. I realise it should handle 4mb easily (it used to do 3mb at one time), however, it isn't recommended for 10mb and so it does have a limit somewhere in between.

It will all probably be ok anyway, I'd just prefer it if I was left alone with my 22mb until I chose differently.

When I went down from 3mb to 2mb upon leaving ntl 15 months ago, there was no discernible difference whatsoever. The speed did change as the speedchecker indicated this, however you couldn't tell the difference in normal use. Therefore it's a safe bet there'll be very little if any difference when it goes to 4mb. There just isn't any point, for me personally.

Oops, sorry... I didn't mean you mate, meant the other guy... meant to go back and edit that as it didn't read correctly. Sorry!

I don't want to upset you but i got the 120 modem & i was on 10mb for a few months (till after 2mb went unlimited). I always got the full 10mb speed & completely stable.
