This is how UK viewing figures are worked out.

https://www.barb.co.uk/about-us/how-we-do-what-we-do/

There is a panel of 5,100 homes around the UK that are monitored and they work out a percentage of them and work it out then based on the total population.

Wow even if all 5,100 are Virgin customers that is a small sample size of the 3m Virgin customers!

Probably done by the same company that predicted a Remain win, Trump to lose etc.

That may be because the Toronto championship rugby may only be in SD? Actually looks far better than SD to me

Back to stats school for you! 5,100 is a huge sample, regardless of the population size.

Those were opinion polls, asking people how they plan to vote. They could lie or later change their minds. But BARB report on what people actually did watch.

The sample households are taken across all TV providers and will also include the number of people in the home, watching whatever it is at that particular time.

Its been worked out that way by BARB since 1981

You don't know what's coming this autumn and we won't know until we are very close to the launch date. I think September may be an interesting month.

I'm quite deflated now!

However, this autumn should see some interesting developments on VM.

Think of VM as a railway station with both arrivals...and departures! ;)

It may be a large sample, spiderplant, but it represents only 1.7% of subscribers. I would dearly love to know how that small sample was chosen.

Think about it. If you toss a coin 1000 times, you're going to get about 500 heads and 500 tails. Do it a million or a billion or a trillion times, and the result isn't going to be much different. You'll just be more tired.

"Panel households are selected randomly, with controls in place to ensure that all sectors of the population and all TV viewing environments in the home are represented. Every home has a chance of being selected to join the panel"
Lots more info on their website if you are really interested.

Yes, but polling is much more intricate than that. It may be a 'random' sample, but the last election showed that these random samples were not properly identified in the first place. More emphasis on types of constituency from which the opinions were taken would have yielded a more accurate result.

Anyway, Virgin must have a pretty good idea as to how many people acfually watch these channels on their boxes, and I think that will be what would have convinced them to pull out of the existing arrangements with UKTV. It does sound like it was a pretty poor deal.

All VM are asking for is the same rights to box sets that Netflix and Amazon have, and the same ability to air their free channels without charge as other platforms do. Sounds reasonable to me. UKTV and the BBC need to have some serious discussions, or the former will lose a huge amount of money.

Except that when you look back, you find that it has indeed changed. Like Virgin getting BT Sport UHD, which was never going to happen, of course. Strange, that. Are you living in a Tardis? :D

But will it now? The space allocated for UHD services has now been removed; I think they might have had to use this space for the extra channels launched to replace the UKTV channels. Apparently, to enable facilitation of access to recordings made prior to their removal, the UKTV channels are currently taking up the same capacity as they were when they were on the customer facing EPG.

Having said that, it appears that VM Ireland customers have today lost access to their UKTV recordings, despite also being given a three month grace period like us.

This, coupled with the loss of Quest HD and further Premier Sports problems, means it hasn't been a good week for VM TV.

Now got full house TV, 350mb broadband, talk weekends, two TiVo V6 all for £72 per month with a £20 credit off my next bill. Hardly watched the movie channels and didn't watch the sport channels as the sport I like are on Eurosport and BT sport.

The girl l spoke to was very helpful and she was saying they are still negotiating with UKTV and hope to be able to make an announcement within 7 days regarding the channels

I think they were just stringing you a line to try to retain your custom. UKTV have today made it clear on twitter that further negotiations are not currently taking place.

I wouldn't take much notice of that. Presumably, the UHD space has been utilised to deal with these transitional arrangements. They could bring it back just as easily as they have 'lost' it.
