Yes, you're right, I was forgetting about the HD variants, including Sky Sports 3 and 4 HD! I was thinking really just about the brand new channels.

I am optimistic about getting all of the Sky HD channels now in September.

Oh, and I haven't ruled out the possibility of getting Sky 3D either, although that is probably a big ask!

They might do. Phone them up and say you are switching from sky more than likely you will get a good deal. I have 2 TiVo's but I got one in after install.

I'm not switching from sky, already on virgin but just have v+ and V hd.

a truly sensational piece of business by virgin media. i'd love to know how it all transpired. it goes completely against BT's business model. did bt fold at the last? Did virgin make concessions about the price to pay? was the deal already agreed months ago ala bomberAF rumour.

be interesting to know

I think BT's strategy was aimed mainly at Sky, who had nicked a fair proportion of their broadband customers!

I think that this may mark a turning point, with the lesson learned by Sky that their aggressive commercial tactics can misfire.

That can only be good for all of us.

Might get a bit confusing if its not...

Yes it's all very confusing.

This seasons FA cup is on ESPN but the following season it's on BT Sport.

I guess if BT had not bought ESPN, ESPN would have had to put this seasons FA Cup rights to tender and BT risk losing them to Sky or paying more.

I imagine BT agreed to buy ESPN to avoid this and for ESPN it allowed them to exit the market with minimal exit costs. If ESPN had just closed down this year they would have had to deal with expensive exit clauses for contracts with suppliers, production teams and staff etc.. instead they can now just TUPE the staff to BT. For the French league and some others I imagine ESPN's contract agreed to show a minimum number of matches on the channel so I imagine that's what they will do and any on top of that quota would be free to show on BT sport.

I might be wrong but having worked in contracting and dealt with TUPE etc.. I'd imagine it's something like this. Hence apparent cheap price ESPN was sold for.

Is ESPN here to stay or will it disappear next year when it doesn't have any fa cup rights? or is it contractually obliged to stay as part of bt sports offering.

ESPN is now owned by BT, and is part of BT Sports

I think its here to stay for a while, it has its own brand that is different to BT sports and they obviously felt they had enough stock of rights to fill this and two additional channels. I guess it will become a more focused orientated channel once it is more integrated into BT sports fold maybe it will get rebranded as BT sports 3 later. I think with TUPE your buying the entity name so therefore all employees under the ESPN will have the same or better arrrangements under BT sports and all contracts continue under the BT sports name so no reason they cant change so for now it must be cost of rebrand etc (but not 100% on TUPE laws and that will take it OT but having just had my company bought I was subject to TUPE)

I seem to remember an article a couple of months back, suggesting Sky were waiting to see what sort of deal VM cut with BT with regard to BT Sports - hence the reason for only a one year extension to Sky and VM's existing agreement for sports.

Yes that was the case so it will be interesting how Sky play this when this contract nears its end game.

i think sky customers will now have to realise they are signed up to a company which doesnt care for them in the slightest. Sky seem to be not interested in doing an agreement with BT Sports. They seem to have no interest in getting a good deal for their customers.

Sky may have all the channels but you can tell its greed straight away. Shame people continue giving them money which keeps them acting like this.
