There is, as always, plenty of space floating about in any case to squeeze in the UHD channel.

We think that new Sky contract did start on August 1st when Sky Cinema want HD only.

Any Sky UHD Channel will NOT launch until 2020 on Virgin Media.

As far as I am aware there is only 1 sky sports UHD channel - not a UHD version of each.

I think you are right Raider. When I last saw the Sky Q box, there wasn't a dedicated UHD movie channel either. The UHD content was accessed on via UHD on-demand section.

Might have changed since I last saw though.

Sky can do two UHD transmissions at once.

There are no UHD channels in their EPG and the occasional programmes in UHD are selected via the red button or via menu. These are always live programmes and usually sport.

All UHD movies and non-live programme are downloaded.

Be interesting to see whether VM will want to create a linear channel with the Sky content or if it will also be via VOD.

I suspect there will be a red button for live tv and an option to see the UHD on demand, but just guessing.

Yes, I suspect that Sky won't want it to differ from their own service by letting VM claim to have more UHD channels.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2019)

My theory was that the multiple 3rd party HD channels closing over the last year on Sky (e.g. TCM HD recently) was because Sky want their transponder space back to launch linear UHD channels, channels that are still to launch. I was under the impression that they are launching them in the New Year when VM is due to get Sky's UHD content, so VM would have them from launch. Certainly the impression I got from the wording of the Sky/VM press release.

Could well be, but Sky also helped to pay for one of the Astra satellites and in return received up to a 50% discount on capacity for a time. It's been speculated that this was for 20 years which, if correct, would be round about now. This will have been how Sky could incentivise channels to launch and go behind the Sky paywall ie they could offer discounted capacity, obtain exclusivity and still make a profit.

Sky renewed deals with SES in 2009.

I'm sure that several new deals have been made over the years.
