Cable Forum - Liz Truss Resigns [Who'll be the next Prime Minister?]

I’d never have expected the Tories to win it or even reduce the gap. The question is how big a drop in their support there will be. There is a sizeable contingent of the blue rinse brigade in Chester and the Tories’ base support there is, or should be, quite solid. I predict it won’t be.

He might popular within the Tory party but Boris Johnson last ratings with YouGov suggest that is he not popular within the country.

I expect the Johnson support to fizzle out. They’ll all be declaring earlier, while everyone else debates Sunak v Mordaunt.

That is very much the case but they don't seem to understand or want to understand that public opinion thinks very much differently.

Opinions polls don't tell the whole story but political parties ignore them at their peril.

Interestingly from the Guido tracker - to the extent it holds credibility at all - of the “anonymous” MPs who hold positions in the party and “have to remain neutral” it’s 17 for Johnson, 1 for Rishi and 2 for Penny.

Either
a) it’s made up to give the impression he’s more popular than he is
or b) party office holders are that far out of touch with the rest of their MPs.

I wouldn't read too much into the gilts on this, they are based on assumptions of what Johnson would do rather than the unfolding reality of what Truss was doing.

I wonder if Johnson will actually stand? Maybe he feels too much resistance despite being confident of the numbers, maybe worried about the privileges committee finding against him and taking the mantle now as the economy declines?
