Sounds like you're paying over the odds. You should be able to get a discount if you ring retentions although it'll mean signing up for another year. Its a pain to have to go through this rigmarole, there isn't any other company I have to do this with. I've been a customer since 1996 - dread to think what I'd be paying if I'd never challenged the price. There must be a large proportion that never do, or even realise they can haggle.

What annoys me most about this latest rise is the 6.7% figure - it's complete lies and only only relates to line line rental increase from £14.99 to £15.99. Most package rises are a lot larger, Remains to be seen if VM have got too greedy.

As for a router - I've never received one from VM , on account of being a long serving loyal customer. I've always bought my own - which is needed to supplement their cruddy equipment.

I called Virgin and spoke to a Scottish lady; she would not budge on offering me a better deal and seemed to agree that I go elsewhere. Pointed out that I must give 30 days notice and could not switch back for three months.... wanted 20 quid for installing a wireless router but a free upgrade to 30mb.....wow!!!

Ring back tomorrow and try and get some one who isn't Scottish (you'll never get anything out of them... ;) )

I'm assuming you did ring 'retentions' ie. the 'thinking of leaving option'. I love the sad recorded voice that comes on initially "so you're thinking of disconnecting your services" - she sounds devastated and as though you've just thrown her mother in the river.....

It sometimes pays to ring back another day if you don't get the deal you want . You could call their bluff and give your 30 days notice, they might change their tune. You can always cancel your cancellation a couple of days before - but I think you'll find they'll contact you before that.

Hmmm I received another letter from VM the other day, this time stating that they could be doing more for me. Small coincidence that our place just been FTTC enabled 6 months ahead of schedule (surprised that the Talk Talk door knockers haven't been around yet)

I've already disconnected the V+ box, I asked the VM CS guy about it's collection, he said I'll be sent a returns pack with details on how to return it to them.

Many thanks for trying to help...... I only ever get a young too happy patronising voice with dial 1 2 instructiions on 150. Do you have a number for retentions?

I think you have to go through the options. Option 5 then 3 (thinking of leaving) - if you 've been going through to the ordinary CS you won't get anyhwhere (do it during UK office hours)

Same for me although the line rental won't apply as I paid a year up front.

Phoned retentions and was given a £30 one off discount which means I effectively pay the same until my contract renewal due beginning of June.

My increase by the way was 14%

Was a bit surprised the letter was addressed to "The Customer" - almost binned it thinking it was junk mail. It's also really unclear about the impact of promotional prices or discounts and if / how it affects new contracts.

It says this in the letter

If you are on a promotional offer we will honour it. Some of your increase may therefore happen at the end of your promotional offer. Visit virginmedia.com/better to find out more.

And then that site has details of how it affects each offer here http://my.virginmedia.com/customer-n...-an-offer.html

It wouldn't say about how it affects new contracts, as that will be covered when you agreed the new contract

I guess I was expecting a letter that told me precisely what was happening for my individual account situation. And also that when discussing the new contract two weeks ago that the agent would have explained that the price he quoted would be going up significantly in Feb.

Any price quoted since the 25th of November should be the 1st Feb prices.

Only someone who doesn't pay line rental (how many of those are there ?)

6.7% is just the line rental increase from £14.99 to £15.99 - VM really must think we're stupid.
