I have never unplugged my BTO modem. However I recently suffered a power outage lasting about an hour. When normal service resumed I was relieved to note everything was unchanged.

Does this indicate that a, relatively, lengthy disconnect is a better option than a momentary blip that DLM might interpret as a line fault?

That is something I would like to know too!

Also wondering if DLM has a standard way of working or if it depends on how it is configured. Knowing all the details could help customers maintain the best possible connection.

Its been recently discovered that if you yank the power cable out of a HG or ECI modem it sends a dying gasp to the DSLAM. The loss of power also means when power is restored the modem has no UAS or LOS to report to the dslam, so then DLM should discard the downtime and not react to it. Openreach documention does say they have methods to see when is a loss of power. Dying gasp may be the method.

So if you ever move your modem or doing something to cause downtime, its best to disconnect it by cutting the power to it first. Removing the DSL cable or initiating a resync in the interface will make DLM think its line instability.

From my experience a disconnection per day doesnt make DLM act. It tolerates one disconnection, I think it tolerates 2 even as long as they short. It should tolerate unlimited if its related to power in theory.

However if you are on a stability profile banded/interleaving and waiting for recovery, then its very important you dont disconnect at all. In that case DLM wants to see platinum stability.

Interesting info Chrysalis!

Removed the power to mine for about 10 seconds and got an increase in latency after but my latency was low to begin with which may skew the results.

is the increase on the first hop? and if you unlock the modem can see right away if been dlm'd.

It's hop 3 but considering the first hop is router and second one the usual hop with no ip/hostname or ping replies, you could call it the first :)

Think I have the ECI modem this time so will look to unlock it. Couldn't unlock the one at my previous address.

A few nights ago I lost the 94. ip and went back to a 176. address. The latency went back down a few ms to what it was before. Didn't take notice what the route was but I am thinking the 94. address goes through a different router that increases the latency.

openwrt would be awesome if the modem is powerful enough. Guess it would be a cut down version rather than the full thing.

Been doing a lot of downloading/uploading today, Usually it's all green with a little yellow spike every 3 or 4 hours, like my graph at the top of this page.
