Re: NTL unbundle digital from Telco

Ok...

This discussion has digressed somewhat!

The subject for discussion is whether ntl have unbundled their phone service from their DTV service, & they haven't-fact.

You can get a 'free for a year' phone line, so you are still only paying the DTV price to ntl, but at the end of the day you still [b]cannot get DTV from ntl without a phone line, whether you pay for it & whether you use it or not is another matter.

So-I reckon this thread has nowhere left to go, so unless anyone has anything new to add to what I have written above, then I will close it in a while....

Re: NTL unbundle digital from Telco

Hi Guys,

I know i have come in on this post quite late in the discussion but i just wanted to get my facts right before i did. I have a friend (Russell) and his mother lives in Nottingham and she has had cable TV for many years and first had it when it was originaly Diamond Cable before NTL took them over. She had the analogue TV service and a telephone line with Diamond Cable and then upgraded to digital cable when it became available. However a couple of years ago she became unhappy with the telephone service (various reasons) and decided to return to BT. So she cancelled the NTL phone line and had her BT line reactivated, now this is the interesting part. She still has two digital STB's in the house and pays the TV package price for both of them, but, she does not pay any charge for a phone line. All she pays for is the digital TV package on both STB's and thats it. I have confirmed this by asking my friend to check her bill, so somehow it looks like you can get the TV service without the phone unless of course her account has just slipped the net.

All the best
Dan

Are you certain? The phone line rental is not listed as a seperate charge on the bill, for example basepack TV will be listed at £19.50 and family pack at £29 - Have you checked the prices she is paying?

Depends, in some areas it now is.

Re: NTL unbundle digital from Telco

Sorry to bring back this thread, but i've noticed something quite interesting.
It seems that the ntl website can tell whether you're a customer or not.
I tried the ntl.com/home again, with my postcode and selected my address. next select an offer, like the broadband and free line rental - but i got this page:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/s.sculley/ntlnooffer.JPG
so, i tried to order just tv - and i got no pop-up on the screen. i presume the logic on this page is that, if you are a ntl customer then you mostly likely take the phone line already.
so, i thought, lets try an address - my neighbours address, as i know they don't have ntl. this time, i can select one of the offers and potentially order it.
so, i next tried to order television by itself - this time i got the pop-up:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/s.sculley/ntltakephone.JPG

so i conclude that if you use an address serviced by ntl, you won't get the pop-up - but if you use an address that ntl does not serve, then you do get the pop-up.

hopefully this has solved the mystery of the pop-up
:)
(oh my, you'd think i'd have something better to do :dozey: ) :p:

Back from the dead! :D

On NTL's part, that's potentially very dodgy - information as to whether or not a household is a user of NTL shouldn't be available like that. :(

Re: NTL unbundle digital from Telco

Well the year finally up on the free line rental got last months bill 10.50 extra for a phone line we don't require. Phoned NTL and asked could we still have the TV but without the telephone no can do I'm afraid. Was quiet happy with tv service and cable broadband but basically the telephone service is poor and above all compared to voip and bt is more expensive. Also all the extras you have to pay for which you don't with other companies. The select services with ntl never work half of the time and fewer of them. Been a customer for over six years have been told they don't make money out of the cable tv that is why they insist on the telephone and tv together. If the can't make money out of the tv why on earth do they call themselves a cable tv company if they can't make money out of it then they shouldn't be in the cable tv business.

This is absolute madness as it as left a bad taste in my mouth especailly with all the braggers on this site bragging about the all the wonderful discounts when threatening to leave. Well I have finally ditched the TV and telephone so now NTL make no income out of both apart from the broadband which when raw dsl comes online I will also consider ditching. I am not going to be subsidising everyone elses services anymore. Sour grapes yes throwing the baby out with the bath water no. I'm sticking by my principles and in the process getting a much better deal. I've got loads of people onto NTL I'm surely not going to be doing there sales pitch ever again. Its about time they started looking after the old loyal customers instead of all these smozzers coming in and getting discounts left right and center.

I'll be in the same position as you next month, and will probably be going the same way - however I think DSL is an inferior technology when compared to cable delivered BB, so I'll stick with that regardless. Check out the new offer from Sky for £149 as an allin one gift box. It looks interesting!

Re: NTL unbundle digital from Telco

I feel ripped fof by ntl oevr the telephone line but they have me by the short and curlies because I cannot have Sky where I live. I am not prepared to allow ntl to take over my telephony services for many reasons, not least Caller Display, plus the fact my ISP only works with BT. Given that the monthly bill for simply watching the TV is neck end of £50 you cans ee why i feel ripped off.

Mind you, should thw bill rise above £50 then I will enter discussions becuase that is a significant milestone I am not prepared to cross just to watch television.

I can watch TV for a lot less than £50 per month! ;)

Re: NTL unbundle digital from Telco

lol

yes but the channels which I subscribe to don't cost anything like £50 per month on Sky (I think about £35) whereas ntl charges me just udner £50. The major reason is becuase I am forced to pay for a telephone line I don't want nor ened. That is a rip-off as far as I can see.

People make me laugh. Can you have BT Broadband but no telephone line, me thinks not (at least BT told me i couldn't), how are your principles now?

So who exactly would have been paying for the discount that you demanded after having a discount paid for by the rest of us?

I wasn't asking for a discount I was asking the price of a service less the cost of a service I did not require as it was poor expensive and not good value for money.

Different packages suit different people, the package you are going after is rubbish to me, but it suits you which is fair enough. What i was more interested in was your principles of being allowed to split TV and Tel when BT won't split Broadband and Tel.

It's all very well to say in the future but as it stands you can't split them. In the future NTL will have 10mb as standard, have a PVR and will do VoIP. I just think principles are all very well when it suits and it's not really about the principles, it's about what you want.

NTl arn't the only company to offer new customers deals and offering deals to existing customers to keep them when they threaten to leave, virtually every single company i can think of does that.
