Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)
uni-kl.de: 0 %
sunsite.cnlab-switch.ch: 2 %
A small amount of packet loss has been detected. This should be investigated.

Test 14: Packet loss en route to an east-coast USA server
Ideally, you should get a result of around 0 % (lower is better)
nyi.net: 0 %
dc.aleron.net: 0 %
The results of this test indicate no problems.

End of testing.

I'm a bit worried by these packet losses but in truth I don't know a lot about the real ins and outs of a connection. Can anyone shed some light please? Is all on here looking good or not?

Just reset my modem.

500 KB/s down 45 KB/s up. Brilliant!

Out of curiosity, why would anyone want 10MB instead of 4MB?

Just like why someone would want 30mb instead of 10mb. It's faster. :)

I'm in Fallowfield and right where there is a huge student population. I'm failry sure that the huge influx of NTL installations in my area, are responsible for my crappy speeds (contention - depsite NTL claiming that isn't the case). But I have made another post asking a question that may be related.

Im waiting till the whole 4mb roll out is done and settled down for a month or so. I might then contemplate upgrading to the 10mb service - im told my area is pretty low for NTL customers so I should get a decent connection.

As you say the result for packet loss doesn't look good, everything else is fairly ok, it would seem.

For now I would suggest running the test at a few different times of day, to see if any pattern emerges. If you consistently get bad packet loss all the time, then it may be worth looking a bit deeper at stuff like MTU settings, but I'd try the diagnostics for a little longer, first, if I was you :)

MFKR78 11-06-2006 16:07

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

Thanks I'll do that before I investigate anything.

The thing is I really wouldn't have any clue about packet loss and looking myself at any reasons for it. I'll have to rely on someone on here helping me with that because I know one thing...I refuse to pay NTL by calling their new customer support lines only to be fobbed off and talked to like I've never used a computer in my life.

Yes, I know you'll score better on a speed test, but is there any practical reason why 10mb is better than 4mb? That alone cant justify the extra cost.

Yes, the hassle of downgrading. If you're on it that is :)

But seriously, you only have 10mb if you tend to use it to download whatever, and if you are someone that downloads then it's hard to downgrade to such a slow speed such as 4mb. Like going back to 56k

mikeybrass 11-06-2006 22:24

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I don't game but I require a high speed connection for academia. 2MB is great and I am looking forward to the upgrade to 4MB. The extra 6MB does not justify paying an extra 10 pounds, for my requirements.

Someone over at Neowin has reported phoning up NTL today and asking to be upgraded to 4mbit as all his mates have been.

Quote:

Anyone wanting a fast upgrade immediately just phone up the BBteam at NTL and ask to have your 2mb to 4MB "activated" - I just did this saying my mates lines have gone to 4mb and the guy said no more other than "it's done for you right now"

Just had to reboot modem :p

The system may say 4Mb but that has been updated ready for billing. They will find they are still on 2Mb. The only areas with 4Mb are Cardiff, Swansea and Belfast as they have had the config files rolled. Do not ring ntl to be upgraded as they cannot do this until the config files are rolled out in your areas.

whats most telling though considering its a so called 'free upgrade' for current paying users, is that they can update all the billing systems, advertising, employee's so quickly, but not deploy the the configs, almost half way through the month and only 3 areas activated so far........

wonder if it will vastly improve tomorrow (tuesday)?.

I was just asking if there was any info as to which area are likely to be upgraded next.
But the Engineers post if true means that I'll be upgraded last as Im on exCWC Bromley :( .

Oh well should get it eventually just more waiting to do :p: would have been better to know roughly how long.

Been upgraded to 4Mb.

Mon, 12 Jun 2006 22:12:46 GMT
1st 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 375 ms = 349525 Bytes/sec = approx 2908 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 359 ms = 365103 Bytes/sec = approx 3038 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 375 ms = 349525 Bytes/sec = approx 2908 kbits/sec

I was expecting it to be faster. I've run the test numerous times at different times of the day - doesn't seem to make any difference.

Change the misleading thread title to New Speeds July 1st and people might stop asking when they're going to get upgraded.
I don't know why NTL bother announcing these things and putting a deadline in. If they just rolled it out then announced it after the event nobody would be complaining and lots people would think it was a bonus as opposed to an entitlement.

Sorry Horace but that would not get NTL off the hook either, because that way it would seem that there were some getting double the speed of others for free and could you imagine the uproar. Especially if it is rolled out to certain areas like the roll out has been done. At first i thought of that myself but on reflection, I and a number of others would be fuming  at NTL for not giving it to ME ME ME first. as it is i am still waiting patiently for my upgrade that i am expecting before the end of the month and yes I have said before the end of the month sorry.

Anyone been upgraded on a set top box yet? I have a Samsung so it should take the 4mb upgrade. I don't care what area you are in it would just put my mind at ease to know that the upgrades are happening to STB's.
The first areas upgraded seem to have been cable modems only  but now there are some other areas done i am a very concerned person. I know it's not the end of the month and all that but you would think "someone" with a Set Top Box would be done by now.

Can someone tell me if i have to reboot to look if i have been DONE. I am on Merseyside

Hi All,

Being reading Cable Forum for a long time now but this is the first time I have posted.

Just noticed I too have been upgraded from 2 to 4 meg (Middlesbrough) and did the speed test:

Tue, 13 Jun 2006 11:41:27 UTC

1st 512K took 1406 ms = 364.2 KB/sec, approx 3001 Kbps, 2.93 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1484 ms = 345 KB/sec, approx 2843 Kbps, 2.78 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1499 ms = 341.6 KB/sec, approx 2815 Kbps, 2.75 Mbps
4th 512K took 1500 ms = 341.3 KB/sec, approx 2812 Kbps, 2.75 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2868 Kbps, 2.8 Mbps

I have the NTL Home 100 modem.

My speed is not as good as some of you on here, is that beacause of my older modem?

There is one big problem I have noticed since the upgrade which was not there before, I could carry out downloads and browse the web at the same time before without any slowdown when browsing.

Now when I download and try to browse the web the browsing is so slow, if I stop the download the browsing goes back to normal.

I know they have had to do some fiddling to get the older modems up to speed but is this one of the things they have done?

If so then should I ask for a better modem?

Just unplug your modem for about 30 seconds, plug it back in and wait for the 2 right hand lights to stay on ie not flashing, job done:angel:

How do you reboot a modem - why, you turn it on and off by the plug you do!

On the morning of Thursday the 15th of June between midnight and 6 AM,
Network upgrades will result in a loss of service in Southampton, Swindon and the surrounding areas

Hopefully Portsmouth will be upgraded on the 15th... :dozey:

Manchester area but I'm due for a cable modem and 10mbit since I cancelled DTV. A person on the same street as me gets 9.62 Mbps through a ntl home 250 cable modem.

I'm getting around 475 KB/sec from my newsgroup news server though. Can the Samsung STB handle speeds faster than this?

That's interesting as I'm in Wythenshawe too, also with a Samsung STB and I'm not seeing speeds on my general internet use today that amount to anywhere near 4mb. I'll have to run a test tonight. How long have you had this for?

Have you rebooted your modem? I'm in Basingstoke (via Reading); that was also listed for today (the 13th), but the new speed didn't kick in until I rebooted just now.

Yes I have it conected to a router which I use for Xbox live without having to unplug the modems cable. Will try speed test again sometime with just a direct connection.

But my web browsing is still very slow if I am downloading from newsgroup which wasn't the case before the upgrade.

It's almost as if the modem has been tweaked to only allow it to concentrate on one thing or the other. If I stop downloading then the web browsing is quicker than it used to be but with a 4 meg download service I should't have any problems downloading and browsing at the same time.

It's the same if I am download anything from a web page, while the download is ongoing the web browsing is very slow.

This did not happen before the upgrade.

Is that just a power down for a minute?

I tried that around 4pm - but still 2m.
