I thought the rollout was starting on the 5th ?>http://www.ntlworld.com/microsites/10/
Looks like it's arrived a few days early, nice one.:)

Thu, 01 Dec 2005 05:48:30 GMT

1st 512K took 500 ms = 1048576 KB/sec, approx 8640 Kbps, 8.44 Mbps
2nd 512K took 421 ms = 1245340 KB/sec, approx 10262 Kbps, 10.02 Mbps
3rd 512K took 454 ms = 1154819 KB/sec, approx 9516 Kbps, 9.29 Mbps
4th 512K took 421 ms = 1245340 KB/sec, approx 9963 Kbps, 9.73 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9595 Kbps, 9.37 Mbps

Only getting 4-5mb here:

Thu, 1 Dec 2005 07:22:06 UTC

1st 512K took 828 ms = 633198 KB/sec, approx 5218 Kbps, 5.1 Mbps
2nd 512K took 844 ms = 621194 KB/sec, approx 5119 Kbps, 5 Mbps
3rd 512K took 828 ms = 633198 KB/sec, approx 5218 Kbps, 5.1 Mbps

Yup, 10Mbit here in South Wales :-) (cardiff)

Does anyone have any information regarding the 75GB download limit? Is this a guideline? If not what are the consequences of hitting the limit?

75GB is quite alot, but I just like to know all the facts :-)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

I got a new card type campaign bumf from NTL this morning with a Xmas tree on it.

In the card it says. 10MB is here!:

-Faster downloads. Up to 10MB and increased uploads of 512k

-Reduced price from 37.99 to 34.99 early in 2006

-More usuage 75gb

-Free broadband plus

-Free Netguard.

Upgrades will be done automatically in December. There is also a site www.ntlworld.com/10 which has watch this space for the 5th Dec.

I am guessing when this starts to go live and changes start to become automatic.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

If, as usual, STB users are not being done until months later will we get the price reduction in Jan ? Will we have the 75 gig allowance ?

Can the STB do 10mb ? some people say a config file is all that is needed, others say we need a swap, CS switches between saying we need a new modem to 'no sir it will be automatic'

Does anyone have any actual facts about us poor STB users ?

Paul 01-12-2005 08:53

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Only the 'facts' we were passed a while ago - that the samsung stb's could only do about 7/8 meg maximum. I see no reason you would not get the price reduction or the 75G limit - they are part of the service level, irrespective of whether the equipment is physically capable of the full speed.

Also, this you need a new modem is codswallop. I had a 3100 SB and swapped it out for a 120 in my Loft and am getting identical results. Other people in Leicester are rompping along at full speed. looks like some of us are hooked up to the crap UBR here. My speed goes from 1MB at peak time to 6-7 Mbit at about 6 am. Clearly a saturation issue..........

Yes I read that, but your 'facts' seem different to NTL CS's 'facts' :(

I'm guessing that yours are probably more correct than theirs (being as theirs changes almost every day) but I wonder when us STB users will get a letter or call to tell us *exactly* what is going to be provided for us.

Seems that modems are upgraded auotmatically from now, and when you phone CS they will do them..

But STB which I have - have to wait - done before the end of the month.

I know because I have a STB and my folks have a cable modem, and i just speed checked it. Does only seem to be at 4MB though :dozey:

You could bite the bullet and buy a new router, would seem cost effective if its gonna give you an extra 5mb

Dont you just love NTL thay up the speed and then all of a suden thay are now dropping the price by nearly £7 a month.

The £7 = £3 for internet and £3.99 for BBPlus
I would have been happy still paying that £7 to pay for more upload speed or bigger cap.

Why do you want 10Mbps? You'll get it - probably - sometime next week, along with most other 3Mbps-ers. I'd be surprised if you get anywhere with CS...

right - just phoned ntl - i'm on 2meg at the moment - here's the conversation:

" hi can i upgrade to the 10 meg broadband please? "
" you're on 2meg, i can't - we can only upgrade from january"
"but....i want to UPGRADE....."
" sorry - i could do it now, but it wouldn't work until january"
" um..ok. bye?"

so - should i upgrade online to 3 meg, and would it then automatically upgrade to 10??

So can I just check that I have this right.....

People are now getting the full 10 mbit/s with a Terajet 210?

This is despite being told earlier that the Terajet 210 will not be capable of getting the full 10 mbit/s and the Terajet 210 only having a 10 mbit/s lan port.

Are people getting this speed using ethernet or USB?

2nd 512K took 440 ms = 1191564 KB/sec, approx 9818 Kbps, 9.59 Mbps

4th 512K took 441 ms = 1188862 KB/sec, approx 9511 Kbps, 9.29 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 9574 Kbps, 9.35 Mbps

Paul Marsden...just noticed that your kB speed tests are wrong. According to them I should be downloading at around 1.2GB/s!

Something is fudged for sure, I am reading posts of people getting full 10mbit all day long, personally my speeds are completely to pot during the evening but not to everywhere. During peak time I get below speed everywhere. After peak time I can get 10mbit to some locations. However this morning at 1am my ubr was very saturated I had 100+ms latency to it and there was nothing on the ntl status page about it, but to me seems balancing work is still going on. I wish they would upgrade rather then keep shuffling heavy users about because if it is like this now with just the top tier upgraded what will it be like when everyone is upgraded.

Paul since about a week ago I have never managed above 9mbit on your speed test and only get that between 3am and 9am, then it fluctuates wildly.

I have had as low as 0.7mbit.

Heres my latest speed test.
Downstream3260 Kbps (407.5 KB/sec)3520 Kbps (inc. overheads)Upstream427 Kbps (53.4 KB/sec)461 Kbps (inc. overheads)

And Broadband CS say the Terayon can cope with it... thats BS from the CS thats for sure........ Getting fed up now :(

i just got off the phone with ntl after trying to get my ambit 100 modem upgraded.

They said that they know my modem cant handle the speed and everyone who has it will be getting a call from ntl this month about sending an engineer out and replacing the modem.

Hope it was not a foboff.

Re: NTL 10MB, Leicester

[quote=Chrysalis]Something is fudged for sure, I am reading posts of people getting full 10mbit all day long, personally my speeds are completely to pot during the evening but not to everywhere.

The thing is the speed is quoted at up to 10mb, speed test site are also only a rough indication of speeds too. One more thing altough people will have the ability to get 10mb, there are multiple factors that will effect us reaching those speeds

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

You know granted the bulk of customers will only use their connection at peak time and with only a small proportion upgraded, Peak time speeds in my area are no better then the old 3mbit, so in that regard it is more of a promotional thing then anything else, the real advantages are in the early morning and the increased cap, I am just worried when all of the customer base is upgraded it is going to be saturated 24 hours.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Looks to me looking through the posts as speeds are also going to be affected by which firm originally owned & cabled each franchise area in the begining. We seem to be better off than most areas here where Nynex were the original owners. Just done a speed test now at adsl guide site which is very busy & still hit 802kb/s + ( hit over 1200kb/s before midday)

got a flyer through the post today saying as a premium customer I can soon get 10mb oh and a reduction to £34.99 a month.

However it goes on to say:-

"10Mb service subject to modem capabilty and assumes components work at optimal speed and capacity"

I think I might just drop to the lowest speed now since I am getting 6Mbit - 7 Mbit less than what I am paying for....On average its going like 300k (The speeds used to be better on 3Mbit)

For all those who have actually been patient enough like me not having to ring NTL to nag them to add me on to the trial speed, I would advice you to do a reboot of your modem. At the moment I am getting around 9.5mb.

None of this having to waste NTL customers time and NTLs time because of inpatient people ;).

Thanks NTL

Unless you go to the web page and change your package, I dont think you will have 10mbit anytime soon. The price atm for 10mbit (was 3mbit) is still £37.99 - once all the 3Mbit (old & new) are done then I am sure they will move onto the 2mbit customers and its 8mbit I think not 10mbit (for the old 2mbit customers). Expected date So I read is like End of 2006 - so you might be waiting a while :)

Hi,

Ok I fear I am going to be slated for asking this, but i cant be bothered to search through 65+ pages on this thread for the answer...

I have been upgraded to 10MBit/s today already and have been getting 1.18Megabyte/s download.. which is fine. However I came home this eve. to find my NTL:home 120 modem disconnected, it wouldnt reconnect without a hard reset. Should this modem be capable of sustaining 10Mbit?
I'm guessing so??

Cheers

Duncan

There have been a few posts saying it will and it won't. There have been posts where people have had theirs swapped for 250's. Phone ts and tell them the problem you have had / are having and see what happens. From what I've read I don't think it is

In Northants, got the 10mbit autoupdate sometime yesterday.

Terayon T2210, 8.1Mbps is the maximum I have seen in normal use.

I have not bothered with speedtests so have no idea of the upload.
I would expect it to be normal as the download is perfectly in line with the guide shown earlier in the thread.

I will wait to be contacted if the modem needs changing.

To be honest 3Mbps was perfectly adequate for my needs although the faster upload is welcomed.

This is what I was saying 5-6 weeks back, because the contention has increased, the trade off is a higher max speed but lower average speed. So peak time performance will be worse then what it was with 1/2/3mbit tiers. However during quiet periods performance should be better. Remember right now 'everyone' else isnt upgraded, their is still 2 more tiers to go, wether or not capacity will be put in place to cater for these people noone knows but I hope it will. For the last 2 nights I havent been able to get 10mbit at 3am, saturation is still present at a light level so when they did the auto upgrade earlier it has made a noticeable impact.

Infact thats very much my experience of the 10meg on day 1.

During the day yesterday (around 2pm/3pm) i was getting full 10meg speeds.
Between about 6pm and 11pm, i could not get the conenction over 6meg (to the point I thought some of my hardware was failing).
After 11pm back up to the full 10meg speeds again.

On 3meg, I could get the full speeds all throughout the day. I am pretty sure there arent many people in my area that have BB (although I will never be ale to find out this information probably) so does that mean that contention has changed and I am sharing with more people?

Not a whine post just trying to figure out what i am paying for ;)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Yesterday, asked to go on 10Mb/s, just the speed increase not the highest price band. I was on the 2Mb and after 10 mins it came through. They did say it was only a trial so I can't complain but... the speeds are all over the place now. Using a 4100 cable modem with firmware Software Version: SB4100-0.4.9.4-SCM02-NOSH, Hardware Version: 0, MIB Version: II , GUI Version: 1.0, VxWorks Version: 5.3 in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire. Average download speed so far is 540kb/s, so about twice what it was at 2Mb. Does seem to be restricted speed, starts off at over 1Mb/s and settles at 540kb/s, like the 2Mb/s settled at 220 kb/s. Using Apple's Quicktime 7 as a test file (32MB). Hopefully they haven't put me on the £37/month price.

1st 128K took 156 ms = 840205 Bytes/sec = approx 6991 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 156 ms = 840205 Bytes/sec = approx 6991 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 157 ms = 834854 Bytes/sec = approx 6946 kbits/sec

is that good.

BTW...In stockport/Manchester
4th 128K took 156 ms = 840205 Bytes/sec = approx 6991 kbits/sec

the only info is what is on the Ntl websites.
All i can say is that there are no upgrades yet for 1 and 2 meg customers. Anyone going on 10 meg will be charged the 37.99 this month and then 34.99 in January. I am not customer service i am a engineer on broadband support. That is till the end of this month as i have been made redundant ?.

I am only getting average of 3 - 6mb a second with the occasional blip to 7.5mb on tests... I rang tech support in india and told them and was it because of hte Ambit120 modem and the guy goes away and comes back and says "the service is 3mb upto 10mb and whether you get 10mbit is dependant on your distance from the exchange." I felt like saying this isn't ADSL and you're talking a crock of <censored> instead I said, "right, thanks bye".

Anyone else been palmed off with this one yet?
I am wondering whether to request a NTL250 modem or wait a couple weeks to see if it calms down.

what it probably means is your speed upgrade and that of others locally has happened before your local ubr/network infrastructure has been upgraded sufficiently to match the trebbling of the speeds.

Well, after another extended customer service phone call, I'm back on 2Mb/s. When I originally rang to ask about the 10Mb/s speed on November the 10th they started charging me the top tier rate but of course I wasn't receiving 10Mb/s level until yesterday, 1st December. After much ado asking his manager, I got a credit for the price difference as they admitted it was their fault. The lower two tiers should be automatically upgraded next year, but he didn't know how much the bandwidth limit was for the £24.99 tier. I asked him to leave the speed as it was to save someone the trouble of changing it back up to 10Mb/s in a few weeks but he wouldn't do that. :( Sorry to hear about your redundancy Bill, hope you find something soon. John PS My return key is not separating my paragraphs :(

not really as the portion of the user base on the top tier is the smallest percentage and also they call it 'upto'.

I live in the Suffolk area and have been on the 3mb service since it started and used to get around 360k/s downstream and around 30k/s upstream. I am using the surfboard SB3100 cable modem which has been great. I since have been told that my 3mb service had been upgraded to 10mb, yee haa!! I checked my speed on various tests and now I get 670k/s downstream and around 44k/s upstream!

Does anyone know if the modem I am using (Surfboard SB3100) is not capable of handling 10Mb connection speeds. I went onto the website and it says capable of 38down and 10mb up!! Im a little confused here. I rang NTL customer support and was put through to some guy in India who did not appear to know what he was on about lol. He took my mac address and told me my modem is capable of the new speeds!! It appears not! Can any one recommend a faster modem I can use which will handle the new 10mb speeds?
Cheers all.

I rebooted my NTL:home 100 modem last night to find that i have also been upgraded. I am in the County Durham area.

When connected directly to the modem via ethernet, I reach the full 10mb no problems, but when I go through my Netgear RP614 10/100 cable router I only get around 7mb :(

Has anyone else experienced similar problems when going through a router?
