Re: Freeview changes
Narrative really need to commit. Continually switching POP channels (mostly POP itself) between broadcast and IP delivery is going to lose them viewers on DTT and do their reputation damage from those that are dependant of traditional TV delivery.

Re: Freeview changes
Music & Memories TV looks to be in the process of securing it's own Freeview channel number. According to the channels message board an announcement is due to be made shortly about a February launch date. It is currently part of the Channel Box selection on channel 271. No info on whether it will be broadcast or streamed, though I would think streamed is more likely.

Re: Freeview changes
Music and Memories have now obtained their streaming licence from OFCOM, and are expected to launch on Freeview channel 290 on 17th March.

Re: Freeview changes
I don’t really keep up on Freeview changes these days but a fairly significant change took place a month ago that I only just found out about.
D3&4 has added 4 new channels using MPEG4. ITV2 +1 and ITV4+1 from COM4. The latter wasn’t a full channel before, it was 1 hour overnight placeholder. E4 Extra and Film4+1 from COM5. These also mean the above channels now have wider geographical coverage as they are available in Relay Transmitter areas. The ITV moves also means ITV3+1 is a full stream on COM4 and no longer a late night/early morning placeholder. 3 of those are new streams, the other 1 was the one That’s TV 3 used, the first Freeview channel to use MPEG4 on DVB-T rather than T2. https://cleanfeed.thetvroom.com/2424...-freeview-mux/ https://www.channel4.com/4viewers/E4ExtraFilm4plus1 |

Re: Freeview changes
The Local channels will likely still be DVB-T rather than DVB-T2, as the latter would likely be a much more expensive change to implement, but they have all changed to MPEG4 as part of the October Freeview changes.
I’ve got a TV that doesn’t get the HD channels or any SD channels on BBCB but does get MPEG4 SD channels on DVB-T multiplexes, i.e. the D3&4 multiplex. |

I only mentioned it to highlight that some people will have old equipment (before small screen DVB-T2 TV got cheap enough) that can get these newly converted MPEG4 channels but cannot receive the HD channels, or those on their DVB-T2 multiplex. Part of a small subset of TVs in UK that have unusual reception capabilities. |

Re: Freeview changes
Aren't all these four channels carried on the Local TV multiplex (L-COM)? The problem, as I see it, is that these low-margin channels will be hit if compression is changed from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 when an old TV cannot decode MPEG-4. Another possibility is that the broadcasters are paying a fixed amount, so have no incentive to move to MPEG-4. However I don't think MPEG-2 will survive after 2030.

Re: Freeview changes
My local Tesco store is selling the Sharp 50HK4345K, it's a 50" UHD LED TV for £339 or £239 for Clubcard holders. The spec is amazing for a cheap TV including Freely, HDR including Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos and all the usual apps you'd expect. The 40" version costs £249 (£159) and the 32" has a £115 Clubcard price. Most people can afford a good cheap TV now.

Re: Freeview changes
We got a new TV for our kitchen when we got it replaced.
It is Freely, but it’s only used for Freeview through the aerial. It’s never been connected to the internet and there are no plans to do so. And none of the other house TVs are connected online via their in-built systems. Most of the secondary screens only get used for short bursts, and for live channels when they are on, there’s no need, the traditional tech does what’s required, and more reliably. Anyway, enough of this, this discussion is for Freeview Changes. |
