Apparently Travel Channel is closing as part of Discovery's new deal with Sky meaning they don't need to keep it running for contractual reasons anymore.
https://rxtvinfo.com/travel-channel-closes-down

Also in the OFCOM report on EPG accessibility a little nugget of information on Horizon OS.

Virgin Media has promised enhancements to its EPG as part of its new Horizon platform in the “second half of 2021”.

No. It's just been people speculating VM would adopt Liberty's system on their other networks, VM have never been particularly concrete and only said more definite things in last year and a bit.

That article is inaccurate.

Travel Channel has not 'closed down' - it has simply been removed from Sky.

Probably contractual again, this time with VM. If it's not on Sky's EPG or Freesat's, it can't be long left in existence. The UK version that is.

Other TV channels like MTV Live, Love Nature and H&C broadcast on VM but not Sky, so its perfectly reasonable for Travel Channel to do so for as long as VM are happy to pay.

I agree. I wasn't suggesting VM don't have or aren't willing to have exclusive channels. Simply that maybe their current contract with Discovery is all that's keeping Travel Channel (UK) open now that Sky has a new contract that doesn't include it.

That may well be the case. A shame that the article incorrectly says that it has closed down, like VM doesn't exist!

It is in the satellite news section and does say "Travel Channel closes on Sky" 3-4 times. But no mention of VM.

They have changed the article now, including the headline, as it was previously just the misleading and inaccurate 'Travel Channel closes down'.

Someone has posted elsewhere that the Travel Channel will be removed from Virgin Media at the end of August. There is no source provided, but could very well be true.

I'm glad that Virgin Media has held on to MTV Live which was removed from Sky in 2016.

I think Virgin are launching an HD Channel for Get Moving is due to Channel 997 being an only channel still not broadcasting in MPEG4 (Channel 997 is broadcasting in MPEG2 ON CO70 - https://www.digitalbitrate.com/dtv.p...ve=209&lang=en)

Some VM customers with older boxes have now had all their channels removed apart from channels 1 to 5. Some will be able to upgrade for free to a V6 box.

Call waiting times are said to be two hours plus on the Virgin Media Community Forum.

What amazes me about all this is how many have been complaining about having no prior warning.

It's one thing to not get emails, that can happen very easily. And physical by-post mail can get mistaken for junk mail and binned. But there have been on-screen messages.

Considering the V box swap outs have been going on for at least 4 years and I'm pretty sure the messages to customers for the boxes that stopped working this week have been there in one form or another for a good six months or more, I can't see why anyone would connect it to Covid.

As for the timing it has been delayed as much as it could - which is again why it's take 4 years to complete. Unfortunately sometimes technical changes have to happen no matter the circumstances.

Pershaps there were licencing (i.e. cost) implications of not doing it now. I'd imagine very few customers have these as their main boxes anymore (though it doesn't seem that long ago that VM were offering them as 2nd boxes). The number of boxes in circulation probably no longer justifies the cost of paying for the software licences etc.

Agreed. A vaccine's some time off so it's not like waiting a couple of weeks, it would be more like a couple of years.

Not initally no, but since the beginning of this year, absolutely. To do something that would be known to cause extra calls to the call centres whilst there are social distancing measures in place that reduces the number of staff available seems daft.

There will always be some people that don't get round to doing things until they absolutely have to, or for some technical reason want to keep the old box for as long as they possibly can, such as heero yuy.

Are some CS staff now working from home to help alleviate this?

Again, it has been delayed until there was no alternative. As I said this last batch of customer that needed to swap have had notifications of one form or another for most of this year.

Some of Virgin's call centre staff have been working from home with appropriate security and protections for customer's data since the lockdown started. That's why the call centres never completely closed.

If they didn't get round to it after four years - tough!

Personal Picks document updated:

https://www.virginmedia.com/content/..._July_2020.pdf

Sky Documentaries HD and Sky Nature HD removed from the Documentaries Pick, so confirms they are Full House / Maxit only.

Investigation Discovery (ID) on 168 is missing from the Documentaries Pick.

It still includes Nat Geo WILD on 264 which hasn't been available for ages, as it's now only on HD.

The ordering in the Lifestyle Pick is quite jumbled, going 179 - 181 - 194 - 195 - 180 - 182 - 183.

For the Personal Picks VM is considering Discovery Shed to be Documentaries but in the EPG it's Lifestyle.

---------- Post added at 11:32 ---------- Previous post was at 10:45 ----------

2 channels will be removed from VM on 20th July according to the EPG:

Vice on 219
H&C (Horse & Country) on 293

Both were added on 21st July 2018 during the UKTV channels dispute.

Pluto TV app now available on Virgin Media:

Quote:

Virgin Media has added Pluto TV to its TV platform which is home to 100s of live channels and 1000s of movies & TV shows on demand.

From 9 July, Virgin Media TV customers will be able to enjoy thematically curated premium channels such as Pluto TV Movies and Nosey with full episodes of The Steve Wilkos Show, The Maury Show and The Jerry Springer Show at no extra costs.

The streaming platform also houses binge-worthy single series channels like FBI Files and Unsolved Mysteries, and a variety of branded channels, curated from the libraries of more than a hundred content partners, including parent company ViacomCBS.

Apart from premium series, dozens of fan favourite movies can be discovered on Pluto TV, such as action drama The Last Knights and Roman Polanski movie The Ninth Gate.

In addition, Pluto TV’s VOD selection spans more than 1,000 titles, with hit series Skins, British drama The Commander and Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen. Virgin Media costumers might also not want to miss Homes Under The Hammer, Fifth Gear or Derek Acorah’s Ghost Towns.

Pluto TV is the latest app made available to Virgin Media TV customers. Over the past few months, Virgin Media has added BBC Sounds, My5 and All 4 apps to its TV platform.

David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, said:

“Pluto TV is a great app that provides a diverse range of programmes from top movies to top TV shows. The good news for our customers is that the app is available at no extra cost and joins our collection of top apps on our TV platform.”

Maria Kyriacou, President, ViacomCBS Networks UK said: “At Pluto TV, we strive to create a new digital TV experience for audiences with an ever-expanding universe of original channels and on-demand programming. Being present on a high-quality platform such as Virgin Media helps us target new viewers and brings us closer to our goal.”

Im surprised Sky Cinema Disney is still on air. I thought it would’ve gone as part of Sky’s new deals with Disney.

The output deal is still running so would imagine it’s not going anywhere until that elapses... on the face of it the new animation channel appears to be the eventual successor for when they choose to shut it down.

So does this mean that VM customers no longer have access to the Sky Cinema app?

The Sky Cinema app is still available to view this content, but Sky is closing the app from Tuesday 11 August, so we'd recommend using Virgin TV Go from now on to ensure you don't miss out.

To be fair I'm not sure there's that many Sky users who still use the Sky Cinema app its all available on Sky Go these days. It would not shock me if Sky discontinued it.

Probably a sign of things to come with the advent of music videos on YouTube and Amazon Music Unlimited among others.

The picture quality is poor and ad breaks make them poorer

I wouldn't say the PQ on MTV is too bad at all, and it's not as if you're necessarily wanting 1080p HD on it anyway..

As for the ad breaks, well they're no worse than Heart-FM which people don't seem to mind...

Shame if those channels go, personally.

I’m definitely spoiled with MTV Live HD and no ad breaks
Then Amazon introduced up to 4K music videos with unlimited music

Now confirmed on Channels.

---------- Post added at 14:24 ---------- Previous post was at 14:16 ----------

Base on information we have seen in the past week Sky might be about to rebranding PICK.

Also Radio Times has confirmed that Sky Cinema Animation HD will launch on Virgin Media on Thursday but have got the channel numbers mix up.

Saturday to Wednesday Radio Times says Sky Cinema Animation HD will be on Channel 412. But From Thursday Radio Times have got Sky Cinema Sci-Fi and Horror HD listed as being on Channel 412.

I think Radio Times has got itself mixed up. Sky Cinema Animation does not start until Thursday, and then it's certainly on channel 412.

Sky Cinema Sci-Fi/Horror is on channel 411 throughout, according to TV & Satellite Week, which is more reliable IMHO.

When Sky has been mentioning it on their TV Twitter feed recently they called it Sky Pick. And there had been instances of that naming when the FTA football was first announced.

Whether they actually do the rebrand properly in the end is another matter, they may just be associating the two brands during the football.

The VM news page says it's free to Sky Cinema subscribers, so the wider availability on Satellite isn't happening on Cable.

Not at all, it is included in the SKY Cinema pack on SKY too not all SKY customers are getting it.

SKY Cinema has announced the launch of Sky Cinema Animation – a new permanent channel offering the latest family-friendly animated movies. The channel is available for all customers at no extra cost effective immediately. ... Sky Cinema Animation is avaible to Sky Cinema subscribers, and through Sky Cinema Pass on NOW TV.

Don't be too impressed, I recorded all 3 whilst I was tucked up in bed :D .

I'm showing my age again, I have a soft spot for MTV. When Sky (Astra) launched in 1989 MTV was all us kids watched. Great memories of what once was a great channel. I tend to stick to MTV Classic and Now 80's now-a-days to have on in the background .;)

There was some effort from MTV UK with the closure of the 3 channels, with 'Goodbye' themed shows.

Thanks. I was expecting something to happen with it. I was 50/50 between closure and it moving to the recently vacated Sony Crime Channel slot so it would be closer to the main Sony Channel.

I wonder if Sony will "pocket the savings" (i.e. this was simply a cost cutting move) or use the stream to launch Pop Max or one of the two Sony Movie +1s that aren't currently on VM?

No idea what will happen to slot no new channels are testing on DBR right now.

But JJ20X may know more via his scanners.
