When i had a quick look into it the licence cost was £180,000 and you had to pay Arquiva (sp?) on top of that. TPTV just don't have that kind of money.

The actual licence JUST for the right to transmit on Freeview is £180,000, before any technical costs are factored in!!! That's ridiculous.

I wonder if the IPTV channels have to pay this just to get a Freeview EPG listing, even though they are broadcasting via the internet?

Yes, the lowest common denominator, I'm afraid.

No interest from this household. :o:

They originally stated that they were coming to Freeview, then this was withdrawn and replaced with a statement that said that they were coming to a new TV platform, but that they were unable to say which one.

They go on to say that it's "good news for those without Sky", so i'm speculating that if it isn't Freeview, they may have meant Virgin Media. In addition, the 15th is a Tuesday- VM usually add channels on Tuesday & Thursday mornings. They say "around" the 15th- launch dates are pretty fixed with Sky- but with VM start dates are often more vague.

Of course, it may simply mean that they have had their nuckles rapped by Freeview for announcing the news prematurely!

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=2099240

I can't see that Freesat would be too concerned about them revealing that they are the new platform but it would make sense to be on there if they are transmitting by satellite anyway. Otherwise, it looks like a service that would fit better on one of the new more budget TV platforms like EE TV, Amazon Fire and TalkTalk as oppose to VM.

For rights reasons, I expect this to mean something along the lines of Tara TV as opposed to simulcasting RTE1 etc.

I would expect VM to pick up this channel if it were made available to them.

Just read the BroadbandTVNews article on the new carriage deal which talks about addition of RTE on-demand content in Ireland only.http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2015/...sky-on-demand/

New Radio channel set to launch on September 21st.

A516Digital is reporting that XFM will be rebrand as Radio X on Virgin Channel 960 from September 21st.

http://www.a516digital.com/2015/09/m...x-rumours.html

XFM Scotland will close in Paisley and Glasgow on that date. As Global Radio are giving it slot up.

No, doesn't affect me; I quit XL TV a year and a half ago. Being forced to pay for a Premium service added to XL was one of the reasons, but not the main reason; it was more like the last straw that pushed me to take a decision that I should have taken earlier.

My post was on behalf of people who feel the same way regarding being forced to pay for a premium service. A premium service is one you decide to take on top of a standard service and pay extra for.

And... I felt sorry for the people who do like crafts and seemed to be getting a bit of stick by people dismissing the channel not worthy of inclusion ;):D

BT Sport is a Premium service, and VM added it to the XL pack. People who just want the extra non Premium channels that XL gives over the other packs, but aren't interested in sport, were in effect forced to pay for premium sport. BT sports channels cost a heck of a lot more than non-premium channels.

This became more obvious recently, with the £3 increase in the XL pack to pay for the new BT sport channel.

Spike won't be arriving on VM in 2015 neither will trutv, however you can watch SPIKE on demand content via demand 5 on pc or compatable tv/box/phone etc not tivo so i'd imagine it will be on there.
Trutv you can watch live if you wish via their website.

Ditto the Craft Channel. That channel's Freeview launch is IPTV only and it channel hops on Sky and Freesat (ie different channel numbers for different times of the day) so more of a soft launch really.

I suppose the thinking is that people don't pay subs to VM to have to watch channels on Freeview.

Unless you have a Freeview PVR, it means watching it live. Shudder the though! :D

All six seasons were on Now TV, and maybe still are.

This is true, I take it all back!

However, I know that many colleagues on here do watch live TV most of the time, and I wondered whether he might have been one of them.

The Africa Channel say that they hope to be back on VM before too long. I can't see any technical limitations, so I'm wondering if the fact that they missed their final deadline to return means that they have to renegotiate another carriage deal? Purely speculation on my part, I've not been told that this is the case.

Not long now until we see if Talking Pictures appears on Tue/Wed- but to be honest I think their next launch will be Freesat or Freeview.

Rumours of a new children's channel called Splat. It will show archive Nickelodeon & Nicktoons shows from the 90's.

Talking Pictures did not start on Freeview today, but I believe that a licence to broadcast terrestrially was issued today.

Not sure if they received a licence to broadcast on cable at the same time, nor if the channel appeared on Freesat* or VM today as I don't have Freesat and my VM TV service is currently faulty.

*Apparently, Freesat updates overnight, so we may not know if that was the platform referred to until tomorrow.

Seems sensible. We are not likely to get any good news on new channels this year, unless theone is right about AMC launching on VM in a few months' time.

The important thing to concentrate on is content, not channels. Watching broadcast channels will almost certainly decline with time and people will become used to choosing programmes from lists or from searches.

I am fascinated by the number of complaints made that there is not enough choice on VM. We have all the major channels and practically all the content we can expect. We are into dramas and manage to watch two hours worth per night (4 at weekends) and yet we have so much to watch that we can scarcely keep our recordings in check even with a 1TB box.

To demonstrate, here is a list of the drama series on our recordings that we currently still have to view:

Odyssey; Partners in Crime; The Trials of Jimmy Rose; The Last Ship; The Transporter; Defiance; The Strain; Necessary Roughness; Black Sails; Zoo; Crossing Lines; Dark Matter; Madam Secretary; The Scandalous Lady W; Life in Squares; Humans; Strike Back – The Legacy; The Interceptor; Wayward Pines; The Outcast; Sons of Liberty; The Syndicate; Black Work; Reckless; Ascension; Home Fires; Resurrection; The Blacklist; Stalker; 12 Monkeys; Critical; The Enfield Haunting; Safe House; The Mentalist; Poldark; Vera; Ordinary Lies; Code of a Killer; Banished; Crisis; Annihilation; Major Crimes; Wolf Hall; The Kindness of Strangers; Collision; Suspects; XIII; Homeland; The Missing; Legends; Tyrant; Chasing Shadows; Almost Human; Betrayal.

I am part way through some of these, but many of those shows I haven’t even started yet. Some were recorded mid way through last year. So this shows that if you are reasonably diligent in recording the programmes you want to see, and couple this with all the films, etc on demand, it is difficult to understand how you could possibly get through everything, even if you watch TV all day long and evenings too!

Of course, I am fortunate in being able to afford to pay for the XL pack and Sky Movies, but you would have to pay whichever platform you were on.

But it’s even better than I have set out here! Netflix is also on the Tivo. My list of TV series to watch on there are:

Narcos; Better Call Saul; Sense 8; Orphan Black; Identity Thief; Marco Polo; Spooks; The Bridge; Heartland; Borgia; Abduction; The Fixer; Continuum; The 4400; The Purge; Orange is the New Black; House of Cards; Lilyhammer; Bloodline; Damages.

This is not an exhaustive list of what I want to see on Netflix, but it’s as far as I’ve got in compiling my Netflix list.

So the next question is, what is missing? Well, the original Sky Atlantic programming, of course, and it appears that Sky will hold out as long as possible to keep this channel exclusively on their own platform. Given this, the only option available to VM viewers is to access these programmes through Now TV. The Roku streaming stick is the option I have chosen to access exclusive Sky programming on Sky Atlantic and ITV Encore.

My concern is that the scourge of exclusivity may spread to yet more platforms, and of course BT’s decision to do just this with their new AMC channel is a worrying development. Fears will be allayed if VM does gain access to this channel within the next few months, but there is still the fear that the likes of Amazon will continue to make exclusive TV series. Although I am fortunate in being able to access all available content I could wish for via Virgin, Netflix, Amazon Prime and Now TV, I hope I have demonstrated that there is plenty of good programming available simply through Virgin.

However, to continually hanker after more channels for the sake of it, without regard to the content they offer, is pretty pointless. Spike and Tru TV offer nothing new and the cost of including these channels on the Virgin platform will only get passed off to us by way of increased costs. Better to hope they add Amazon Prime and Now TV to our Tivo apps and we would have access to pretty well all we could want.
