I'd take those HD channels...Any channel that is broadcasting in HD, VM should definitely try to secure. I might not watch History much, but Vikings in HD would look so much better ;) Universal has some good stuff on there, just a shame their SD picture is sometimes bad.

If VM could secure a HD version for those that have one, I think that would be a step forward. It might not be Atlantic, but at least we could watch channels with good picture quality :D

But I guess if there is a demand for the Adult Channels, there shouldnt be any reason why VM couldnt get them in HD if it were possible.

In the past they've said they have said they hope to launch HD in the future, this year they've actually said it will be in the summer. Premier Sports is a low-cost, low subscriber channel that's been successfully going since September 2009 so will probably carry on plodding along unless there are dramatic changes eg Setanta loses 3pm Premier League matches, rights to its other sports escalate.

I feel that way too.

I can see BT buying Premier Sport over and using the Sky EPG slot for BT Sport 3 or BT Sport Extra.

With all the rights that Premier Sports have being move to ESPN or BT Sport.

All the free TV service platforms have slightly different shareholders hence the overlapping; but separate; offerings:
Freeview: Arqiva, BBC, Channel 4, ITV and Sky.
Freeview Play: Arqiva, BBC, Channel 4 and ITV.
Freesat: BBC, ITV. The company's Freetime software, a YouView equivalent, is available on some DTT televisions.
YouView: Arqiva, BBC, BT, Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV and TalkTalk.

Sorry, I was getting YouView and Freeview mixed up

It would be an odd time to add it as the NHL season finishes in April and the playoffs run through to early June. Also from memory Premier Sports signed a long term exclusive deal a few years back.

NHL Gamecenter live has been available to UK subscribers for ages its available on Roku , PlayStation , Apple TV , Xbox and other devices.

I believe some games are blacked out (those being shown on Premier Sports) although have to admit I'm not 100% sure on this bit.

I can't see it coming to VM TIVO anytime soon , I'm pretty sure its not available on the US TIVO.

Maybe we will see the missing Viacom channels from the MTV suite coming to VM as Viacom seek to negate declining audiences for their channels?

Which are we missing?

We'd get the missing channels today if VM paid for them. With Viacom now owning Channel 5 we have to wait and see what reorganisation, if any, that Viacom do to their large bouquet of UK owned channels.

And talking of reorganisations, the media were saying last week that Viacom and CBS are to be merged back together again. I don't see how this will affect anything as they have the same owner, Sumner Redstone, in any case.

Where to start? Well firstly, Redstone doesn't own CBS and Viacom. They're listed on the stock market. But National Amusements, his company, does have key voting stakes in them. But Redstone is 91 so won't be pulling the strings forever. What happens next? http://www.cnbc.com/id/102400366#.

How about the fact that Sumner Redstone holds the largest voting shares in CBS and Viacom which gives him de facto control of the companies. And despite the article you linked to, once he's gone, his daughter will own the largest bloc of shares giving her control.

I think we may see a change when Spike launches. Either, as will be on Freeview, it will replace Viva on cable, or not and we'll get an additional channel.

I'm interested to see whether Viacom keeps the Channel 5 offshoot channels or launch more of their own branded channels such as Spike and TV Land.

Base on confirmed information VIVA will close on Freeview but will still be broadcasting on Cable and Astra UK. With some VIVA shows moving to 5*.

What I was getting at was that the music channels have suffered a massive loss in viewers. In order to negate this, Viacom may offer the channels to VM for virtually nothing.

I feel years from now the following may happen.

-5* will become Land TV.
-5USA and Spike will become one.
-5USA slot will be use for 5Movies or Paramount Movies.
-VIVA and Land TV will become one.
-VIVA slot on Cable and Sky will be use for Spike +1 or Spike HD.
-Spike will move to 5* slot on Freeview and Viacom will sell off VIVA slot on Freeview.
-Channel 5 will stay as now to keep it channels numbers.

Max, remember its not just us few on Cable Forum that are the VM customers, they have millions of customers who probably watch the "rubbish channels". These other customers may think the channels you watch are garbage :D

I don't mind having lots of channels as VM need to cater for as many people as possible. I'm just an advocator of channels being in HD whethers its BBC1, Sky Living or Pick lol..(as long as the channel has a HD broadcast, I think VM should try to secure it on our platform)

If VM can tempt more customers, the more money they can make and hopefully increase their content, the delivery of content and overall service.

It's true that some channels actually pay to be on the VM platform, but from what I was last told about this (which was some years ago- so things may have changed) this isn't the case with the Viacom channels.

Just found out that a new channel called 'Red Bull' from the energy drink manufacturer of the same name starts in April 2016.

It has not yet been decided if this will be carried by VM as carriage agreement talks have yet to commence. I'll post more info. if I get any :)

Would not surprise me, they have an extensive VOD and apps and sponsor/own a variety of sports in their portfolio, some of which like red bull air racing they already broadcasts live. I think they are already on Apple tv so they could, dare I say (ahem old boy :)) move to a linear tv approach and broadcast on suppliers

Red bull is a sports channel in usa i believe.
It is replacing reality on Sky i don't know if it's launching on any other platforms.

Yes, it's definitely a linear channel that's coming.

Some programmes will be done in house and some will be bought in. I first heard about this in 2014 and it was at the time mooted as a reality television channel. From what I was told today, it seems to have diversified as music, gaming, sports etc were mentioned.

Cheers. I wasn't aware that a Red Bull existed in the states, nor that it would be replacing CBS Reality. Maybe that's where the erroneous idea that it would be a soley reality TV type channel came from??

Not replacing cbs reality there is another channel on Sky called reality their epg is a mess lol anyway reality is basically cbs reality but it only broadcasts for a couple of hours a day, cbs reality itself is staying as far as i know.
Confused? me too lol.

CBS Reality is not closing. On the Sky EPG CBS Reality has 2 slots on the EPG showing the same programmes (channel 146 and 198)at the same times apart from teleshopping. I would imagine it is this extra slot (Channel 198) that is being changed to Red Bull TV.

Thanks for clearing that up. Sounds like the second part time stream was simply a holding channel to ensure an SD EPG slot. AFAIK they have to show a min of two hours programming to keep the EPG slot and have obviously used Teleshopping to recoup some of their costs of doing this.

I wonder if the recent calls for energy drinks to be restricted to adults only because of the high sugar content will have any affect on the plans to create Red Bull TV?

I'm sure, at least in part, that this channel is intended to be a promotional vehicle for Red Bull.

Would they be allowed to encourage young people to drink their product??

Will this negative publicity prompt them to get the channel on air earlier than planned??

I've also found this. I'm not sure why a cable site is concerned with Sky channels, but this article states that carriage on Sky has been finalised. As this will be a FTA channel and they appear to have an EPG slot in readiness, I doubt Sky have had much, if any, involvement!

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2015) Vol. 1

The last launch date i heard for Spike was July so still a while off yet.

As for TV Land launching in the UK it is not going to happen at the expense of 5 USA or 5*. Both channels have brand recognition in the UK and TV Land does not. Viacom are not stupid they will not pay such a huge amount to but Channel 5 in order to slice its value by changing the name on some of its assets. If they wanted to launch TV Land they would have just bought EPG slots, it would have been a whole lot cheaper.

I think 5* means a lot more to people than Viva does which is evidenced by the fact that Viva is likely to close to completely change its remit back to music. As for Spike i think you would be surprised how well known the brand is over here. TNA Westling was on Spike for a long time, and before that WWE. Gamers know the Spike Videogame awards, and shows such as Bar Rescue and Auction Hunters have aired in the uk.

Viva should continue on cable and satellite when Spike launches. It is just on Freeview that Spike will displace Viva.
Quote:

C21media Spike replaces VIMN’s VIVA channel on Freeview, with the FTA UK TV rights to Viacom content previously owned by VIVA to be made available to 5*, while VIVA will continue to be available to cable and satellite viewers in the UK and Ireland... VIMN said it is also aiming to secure distribution for Spike on Virgin Media and on the UK’s DSAT platform.

I'm interested due to this:

http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id...ries-announced

"Spike TV, which has been involved in combat sports as a television home to Bellator MMA and Glory kickboxing, will air boxing for the first time as part of Haymon's deal to purchase time on the network. Spike TV will carry a minimum of 33 monthly cards on Friday nights -- nine this year with 12 more apiece in 2016 and 2017. The network also said that if all goes well, additional cards might be added."

As a boxing fan I'd love to see Spike TV in the UK broadcast these shows. I'm not holding out much hope but if they do it'll mean some of the the biggest names in boxing being showcased on free to air TV. Not for everyone I know but it would be huge for boxing.

It's website just says Freeview 8 and nothing about Virgin (or Sky). However, its wiki entry says it will be on VM this month. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Centre_TV

Don't forget that they will be relying on inertia or forgetfulness to get you to continue paying for it afterwards. Also, Sky will not allow anything that you recorded to be viewed after movies are taken off your subscription ;)

Agreed not sure why they do it with the basic channels but I can fully understand the movies , the way Sky's OD service is setup On Demand content is added to the planner just like recordings so a user could easily download a load of movies and simply pay a month especially with 1TB and 2TB HDD in use.

Unlikely. Another company (RPX) bought the patents, which appear to cover the aerial technology.

As you say in your blog, now that BBC1 +1 won't be using the old BBC3 capacity if the closure goes ahead, it means that 9pm to 7am is going unused.

Maybe they should introduce BBC2 +1 to use up the spectrum? If they aren't going to use it, perhaps the BBC could raise much needed funds by renting this prime time slot out to another broadcaster (if this would be allowed).

BBC1+1 is not a goer now, so I can't see that your proposed BBC2+1 would be either.

I would not be surprised if BBC3 was allowed to continue in the slot once all this fuss is over. Much ado about nothing!

It is because of the new deal signed between VM and Fox...

This is from MB's blog

"FOX + and FOX HD on the move on Virgin Media

Just days after of parent company 21st Century Fox rumours of being in talking with Discovery Communications, Inc about an takeover.

Virgin Media has signed an new broadcasting deal with FOX International Channels (FIC).

As part of the new deal sees FOX + moving to Virgin Channel 158 with FOX HD moving to Virgin Channel 199

I didnt know when the channel was moving, but if it already has, that was pretty quick.

It will be interesting to see if this app will be made available through the TIVO later this year. This would be a useful addition to our services.

http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2015/...igital-future/

The BBC has set out a new vision for the digital era with a new initiative designed to bring a tailored experience to BBC Online.

myBBC will launch this autumn with a personalised app that is designed to make sure the user doesn’t miss anything that is important to them from the launch of new series, the start of matches, traffic and breaking news.

“It’s the start of a real transformation – the myBBC revolution. How to reinvent public service broadcasting through data. But we will always be doing it in a BBC way – not telling you what customers like you bought, but what citizens like you would love to watch and need to know,” said BBC director-general Tony Hall.

In a blog post Phil Fearnley, Director of myBBC and Homepage, explained that some of the work was already in place through the BBC Weather app, which automatically finds your location and the BBC Playlister that explores music from across the BBC’s programmes or recommended by DJs, actors and expert curators.

“We will make the BBC online feel personal and relevant to you, by linking up our content and launching new features and functionality to help serve each and every one of you better,” he said. “You’ll be able to create a BBC experience that you control, recognises you as an individual, and brings you the best of our content based on what we know you’ll love.”

Fearnley made it clear that while the BBC would be asking users to sign in, the data would be going no further that the provision of relevant content.

It's about time a HD swap option was added, instead of moving channels around, FOX HD 158, is one of the few channel numbers I know, that and 212, 310 and 604 lol

Well spotted.

No idea why its happened. VM have shown no inclination as yet for a HD swap, so don't know. Perhaps when this new deal was signed, FOX just asked for their +1 to be next to their main channel. I doubt its anything more "interesting" than that. (More's the pity)

I know what all the DNPs are ..... the Virgin TVNowhere - sorry Anywhere - app will have its release for Android Lollipop exactly 6 months after the software was launched (which will mean a launch date of 5 May). Also it will become available on 3G/4G exactly 4 years after SkyGo became available to their subscribers on their mobiles (which will mean a release date of 6 July). Of course, both events are extremely unlikely/improbable.

The general belief is that this may be in preparation for new channels.
