Maybe, but given that Mcirosoft likes to name their general release builds with as xx00 (Windows 7 was 7600, 8 was 9200 and 8.1 9600) then I think we'll be seeing an update to 10300 before long.

I liked 8 to be honest. I liked that more than Vista. It seems they do one good release, then a rubbish release, and so on.

Updated here, only one small complaint. Which is not even really that important, just something that bugs the bloody life out of me. The taskbar at the bottom, when I highlight something it stays highlighted. Tried holding shift and right clicking, doesn't solve it.

Updating now, had a bit of a problem as the download was stuck on 15% when i turned PC off last night and it didn't restart this afternoon, restarting the Windows update service fixed that on the 3rd try though.

Traditionally versions of Windows have pretty much followed the reverse of the Star Trek rule, which states that the even numbered films are better than the odd numbered films (1 was pretty boring unless you are seriously into SciFi, 2 was an excellent thriller, 3 was OK, 4 was good, 5 was terrible, 6 was the best of the original movies). With Windows it's traditionally been the odd numbered versions that have been good and the even that haven't been as good.

Personally I never really had a problem with either Vista or 8 (apart from an active hatred of the "Start Screen" which always seemed like nothing more than a way to force us to get used to Windows Tablets.

And the dreaded thumbnails problem is back. Grrr. And now I am stuck, I either install 10130 again, or go back to 8. This is not good enough by MS.

I get to see the folders and icons on the desktop, but when I go into a folder, there are no thumbs. The folders don't even show up. All I get is the name of the file, and that is it. I have reset folders back to default, made sure the option to show icons, never thumbs is not selected and every solution on the internet. Nothing works.

SnoopZ 16-07-2015 22:59

I can't really help other than googling, I guess you have reset the icon cache?

I wonder if your antivirus is affecting it if that is possible?

Well, onto the latest build and it all looks pretty good.

Well, aside from the Citrix Receiver not installing at all, but hey ho, that's probably for Citrix themselves to fix.

Wouldn't even think about launching for me on build 10166 or the current one. Will try again tonight however and re-download.

Thanks for the tip, if it fails again I'll send feedback to Citrix directly.

I think MS advised people not to go off the insiders preview during the RTM stage release as they're testing the public updated method, not sure when it'll return but maybe try to get hold of the clean iso for this build.

You sure swap versions of windows alot! Must take alot of your time.

I didn't think you could activate a new build now i.e. if you're not upgrading from an existing version of W10, you can't do it till the final release

http://www.neowin.net/news/psa-now-i...ows-10-install

Quote:

The Windows team has pulled all the Insider builds as well as their ISOs and is only allowing upgrades to Windows 10 10240 via Windows Update. This is specifically designed to stress-test Microsoft’s systems ahead of the official release later this month. But this also means that activating any of the previous builds no longer works.

In other words if you were thinking you might do a clean install on a device like the Surface 3, this isn’t a good time. Your only option would be updating from an existing Insider build that’s already activated.

Yes, but you can't go from Win 7 or 8 straight to 10240. You'd have to go via an earlier build, and you now can't activate those. See this twitter exchange

We've removed ISOs and keys. At this point there isn't a supported clean install path. Just upgrades from here until 7/29.

I updated win 8.1 to 10166 and then to 10240 yes permanently activated then after activated I clean installed 10240 still permanently activated here

this is RTM that why permanently activated mate we get ga updates on date of release on 29th there doing exactly same as they did for windows 8

on 29th July new build or just updates?
i thought we o ready have RTM. so why we need new build or updates on 29th July if we are on RTM build?
yeah your right i upgraded first then i did clean install.
i think windows 10 remembers my windows 8.1 serial key when i did clean install.
maybe windows 10 saved my win 8.1 key in the BIOS or on Microsoft server.
so you can format your hard disk drive and still be activated permanently. or forever

the one that's released on 29th should have the updates build into it one now should get the updates on 29th from windows updates

think once upgrade is done and activated it saves it to Microsoft server so once you clean install it activate automatically

That is just ludicrous. Windows would never save your key to your BIOS. Certain details about your licence are probably stored with Microsoft but I don't think they keep your actual serial key.

Do you want to continue as a Windows Insider and keep getting preview builds after 7/29?
Or do you want to upgrade your Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system that has been getting Windows 10 Insider Preview builds to the 7/29 release and stop being an Insider?

“I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

“I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.

It is our hope that the vast majority of Windows Insiders who have been with us since we announced the program last year will continue forward, and it was in that light that we authored the blog post about upcoming changes to the program. I regret that this caused confusion about who was or was not eligible for the Windows 10 upgrade offer, but hope that this helps to clarify.

Following an unfortunate miscommunication by Gabe Aul, Microsoft has been tying to eliminate this rumor to no avail. And the latest build, which is strongly believed to be the RTM version, remains permanently activated, although no Windows 7 or 8.1 license is needed to run this installation. a slim chance remains that Windows Insiders will receive Windows 10 without a license validation after all.

now we all can get free RTM

Gabe Aul states:
Once you upgrade W10 w/ the free upgrade offer you will able to clean reinstall Windows 10 on same device any time

not sure yet if that means you can do a reset using the Windows Recovery tools, or if you can actually start with a new hard drive or ISO in order to do the clean install.

Windows Insiders need to upgrade to build 10240 before they can use the new store.

I wonder how Microsoft will do the rollout. It states anytime after July 29th so some people may have to wait until early August.

I wonder if it will be Country by Country.

well they said insider wouldn't get it to 29th most insiders have it now so plans would have changed again the reserved ones probably start getting it on 29th not sure if be country by country but we know USA be first ones

Not sure if this is the place to put my question but as this thread is about Windows 10 here goes. Apologies in advance if I use the wrong terminology and if the team want my questions in a separate thread I am more than happy for my post to be moved.

My laptop came with Windows 8.0 just before 8.1 was released and I updated without a problem using the windows store links. I have registered for the upgrade and assume the preliminary downloads are being sent to my laptop prior to my receiving the full copy.

Before I install Windows 10 is there any housekeeping I should do, I intend to run a full virus/malware sweep to make sure there is nothing nasty lurking about and thought I would also run CCleaner. Is there anything else you guys would recommend?

I use startisback and was wondering if I ought to disable this?

Also can any of you give me any other tips for a smoothish changeover to the new version.

I have been reading this thread with great interest but know my poor heart wouldn't be able to cope with doing anything resembling the tweaking you guys seem to have been doing, so once I have done all I can ... I just want to be able to press 'install' and then close my eyes tightly when I decide to do the deed. :D

I don't expect issues for you when upgrading to 10, but i would disable 'Startisback' so it doesn't messing with Windows 10s new start menu until you know if you want to use it or not.

I haver personally clean installed as well as upgraded Windows 10 and the whole process goes well each time, just backup what you don't want to lose like photos important docs etc incase things do go pear shaped!

I am loving Windows 10, even Sirius loves it and that is really saying something as he hated Windows 8.1 with a passion! :D

Microsoft releases a tool to block automatic updates in Windows 10.

We should have been able to do this like in other versions of Windows in my opinion from the start!

If you have a legit copy of 8 then upgrade it to 8.1 then to 10 for free?

Alternatively when windows insiders is available again soon then get that then stay in the insiders program which means you get 10 for free?

Windows 10 is now released, some users may even have downloaded it in the background through Windows update and just need to install.

There is also an official Windows 10 ISO download page, I am guessing I can install this using my existing Windows 8 key or do I need to upgrade first?

Other sites are reporting we need to do an in place upgrade before installing an ISO with a Win 8 key so I am not sure yet until someone does it. I am on the preview so I won't do this for a while and in bed ill doesn't help either.

Well, my insider version had a massive update as Windows went live. Interesting that they kept the same build number (The first half anyway) but hey.

Good luck to those about to see Windows 10 for the first time!

Already been posted a few hours ago. ;)

Just waiting for someone on the interwebs to try it out with a 8.1 key and see if it works without first going down the upgrade path.

The info is hiding here: http://www.winbeta.org/news/day-one-...download-links

Edit: My build now has the option to defer updates (As I am on Windows 10 Pro after updating from my MS Store copy of Windows 8 Pro), and I can officially leave the Insiders group too in the settings menu.

My PC updated with this in the early hours of last night.

As for finding build numbers, I honestly couldn't tell you now they've hidden them! :p

Thanks, the other half said it updated something when closing down last night so i have no idea if i am on the latest or not now as typing 'winver' in Cortana just says Version 10 (build 10240)

Does anyone know if you will be able to set up a dual boot system with 8.1 and 10, until you are more confident that everything is ok with 10? Or at least be able to make a system backup of 8.1 and restore it if necessary.

To find the versiom, press the windows key + r, then in the run command type winver, press Enter and it comes up with the build info.

Already done all that using Cortana, but it doesn't give the FULL build number unfortunately.
