Will be updating my laptop tonight, that had the last build on it and was working fine. This will mean both my pc's will be on the latest build.

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I liked 8 to be honest. I liked that more than Vista. It seems they do one good release, then a rubbish release, and so on.
Updated here, only one small complaint. Which is not even really that important, just something that bugs the bloody life out of me. The taskbar at the bottom, when I highlight something it stays highlighted. Tried holding shift and right clicking, doesn't solve it. |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Updating now, had a bit of a problem as the download was stuck on 15% when i turned PC off last night and it didn't restart this afternoon, restarting the Windows update service fixed that on the 3rd try though.

And the dreaded thumbnails problem is back. Grrr. And now I am stuck, I either install 10130 again, or go back to 8. This is not good enough by MS.

I get to see the folders and icons on the desktop, but when I go into a folder, there are no thumbs. The folders don't even show up. All I get is the name of the file, and that is it. I have reset folders back to default, made sure the option to show icons, never thumbs is not selected and every solution on the internet. Nothing works.
|
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
I can't really help other than googling, I guess you have reset the icon cache?
I wonder if your antivirus is affecting it if that is possible? |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Well, onto the latest build and it all looks pretty good.
Well, aside from the Citrix Receiver not installing at all, but hey ho, that's probably for Citrix themselves to fix. |

I went back to 7 a week ago but fancy trying this new build but when I go to the download page the option to select it is greyed out, is this because I downloaded the previous version?

@Dave42
did you do clean install or upgrade from windows 7 or windows 8.1? can you confirm windows 10 build 10240 is no expire date and activated permanently? i get permanently activated from clean install? why? |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Quote:
this is RTM that why permanently activated mate we get ga updates on date of release on 29th there doing exactly same as they did for windows 8 |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
on 29th July new build or just updates?
i thought we o ready have RTM. so why we need new build or updates on 29th July if we are on RTM build? yeah your right i upgraded first then i did clean install. i think windows 10 remembers my windows 8.1 serial key when i did clean install. maybe windows 10 saved my win 8.1 key in the BIOS or on Microsoft server. so you can format your hard disk drive and still be activated permanently. or forever |
Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion

think once upgrade is done and activated it saves it to Microsoft server so once you clean install it activate automatically |

Do you want to continue as a Windows Insider and keep getting preview builds after 7/29?
Or do you want to upgrade your Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system that has been getting Windows 10 Insider Preview builds to the 7/29 release and stop being an Insider? “I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your selection. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re continuing the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well. “I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer* that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire. It is our hope that the vast majority of Windows Insiders who have been with us since we announced the program last year will continue forward, and it was in that light that we authored the blog post about upcoming changes to the program. I regret that this caused confusion about who was or was not eligible for the Windows 10 upgrade offer, but hope that this helps to clarify. http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwin...review-builds/ Quote:

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Following an unfortunate miscommunication by Gabe Aul, Microsoft has been tying to eliminate this rumor to no avail. And the latest build, which is strongly believed to be the RTM version, remains permanently activated, although no Windows 7 or 8.1 license is needed to run this installation. a slim chance remains that Windows Insiders will receive Windows 10 without a license validation after all.
now we all can get free RTM |

Gabe Aul states:
Once you upgrade W10 w/ the free upgrade offer you will able to clean reinstall Windows 10 on same device any time not sure yet if that means you can do a reset using the Windows Recovery tools, or if you can actually start with a new hard drive or ISO in order to do the clean install. |

Re: [Update] Windows 10 Discussion
Not sure if this is the place to put my question but as this thread is about Windows 10 here goes. Apologies in advance if I use the wrong terminology and if the team want my questions in a separate thread I am more than happy for my post to be moved.
My laptop came with Windows 8.0 just before 8.1 was released and I updated without a problem using the windows store links. I have registered for the upgrade and assume the preliminary downloads are being sent to my laptop prior to my receiving the full copy. Before I install Windows 10 is there any housekeeping I should do, I intend to run a full virus/malware sweep to make sure there is nothing nasty lurking about and thought I would also run CCleaner. Is there anything else you guys would recommend? I use startisback and was wondering if I ought to disable this? Also can any of you give me any other tips for a smoothish changeover to the new version. I have been reading this thread with great interest but know my poor heart wouldn't be able to cope with doing anything resembling the tweaking you guys seem to have been doing, so once I have done all I can ... I just want to be able to press 'install' and then close my eyes tightly when I decide to do the deed. :D |

Windows 10 is now released, some users may even have downloaded it in the background through Windows update and just need to install.
There is also an official Windows 10 ISO download page, I am guessing I can install this using my existing Windows 8 key or do I need to upgrade first? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...d/windows10ISO |
