And HD versions of channels with vast amounts of teleshopping...

Nothing very compelling on that list.

There's some good stuff on Yesterday, and I'm a huge Jon Stewart fan, so the first two on that list would be very welcome.

Ah more hd channels on the way. Excellent. TruTv coming as a new channel. And then potentially a surprise from virgin media after those questionnaires? Then do you think we'd hear of this? And what could the surprise be?

Free netflix? Free premium hd channels? I'd take either! I can imagine this potential surprise being announced just a few days before the price hike...or maybe Christmas? Or maybe we've all been bad this year and we won't get anything at Christmas but coal (and a price hike)

Morning all,

Great news about more HD channels.
I may not watch them all personally, but it's great for VM customers who watch these channels, to be able to watch them in HD. If it improves the service overall, then it's brilliant :)

Perhaps not so much NEW channels as upgrades on existing ones - but welcome never the less. Are there any rumours about new channels - ones not yet on Virgin Media?

Indeed good news and as discussed elsewhere there really is very little left not on VM and this list if it all comes on air will make it even littler!

My inlaws have Sky and have tried very hard to find something not on VM I would love but there really isn't anything except that unmentionable channel which I could say would be good to have....and I'm not a fan of that channel really anyway....

It makes a lot of commercial sense for both VM and Sky to continue to increase the number of HD channels they offer to put space between their TV offerings and those from TalkTalk and BT. I can only see this trend continuing thanks to the competition from BT and TalkTalk.

I actually see HD as more of a necessity (rather than increase of competition)with new age televisions as they continue to approve their screen resolution , I have campaigned for High definition to be the "standard" definition; a must not an optional, lets faced it anyone who has tried to watch skysports 4 golf, or any other sport in SD (which is lower than the standard "standard" definition most other channels provide)

with UHD being tested and on the horizion it wont be long (whether companies are ready to accept or not) will be here soon and within the next decade I predict it will be in operation in same way HD is now but with HD being the "standard". Where technology pushes, companies follow

HD is already the standard isn't it? Very few Freesat/Freeview boxes/TV's are now without an HD element and all major channels either in front or behind a paywall have an HD variant.

I TOTALLY AGREE :-)

HD being the standard would be amazing, but I'm sure someone posted there are still SD only boxes in use (I am amazed lol). Not sure how many channels could hold a SD version, a +1 version, a HD version and a UHD version lol

HD will be the standard, but does it depend on the majority of the country owning a HD tv?...not sure who would decide. Remember not all channels are in HD yet, especially the +1 versions.

true but if it is the standard why is there a premium charge for it in some cases which therefore suggests that the "standard" standard is below acceptable standard

maybe for the colourblind people or blind people (i being serious), do they therefore dont have to pay TV licence or does being blind already have a free licence regardless.

also is those stats just on those who purchase a black /white licence rather than number who use a black & white TV

Confirmed by Virgin insiders:

-Sky Sports 5 - Coming August 12th on Virgin Channel 506.
-Sky Sports 5 HD - Coming August 12th on Virgin Channel 516.

Rumours on the web:

-TruTV - DS Forum says it coming August 4th to Virgin Channel 245.
-ITV Be - ITV confirmed that ITV Be will launch on October 8th on Virgin Media.

I agree, there is a charge, whether it be the Sky HD charge or the jump from VM's L to XL TV for HD channels. When these charges have gone or if VM start adding more HD channels to the lower packages, I think we can say that HD is becoming the new SD.

Colour Blind covers (like 'blind') covers a wide range of vision issues - for instance, I am medically classified as colour blind, but only mildly (enough to stop me being eligible to be RAF aircrew when I applied, but not enough to have major (or even much noticeable) effect on my day to day life (red-green dichromatism)).

I can see most things the same as non-colour blind people, I just have cannot tell some shades of red and green apart (but I can tell if the traffic light is at red or green...;)).

I guess they won't be broadcasting the football in 3D anymore then too?

3D is a niche product and always will be.

With most newer TVs being 3D ready, they could have opened it up to a lot more viewers.

Netflix or Amazon would be great bundled in with a VM TV package, that would be amazing if VM could pull that off.

But unlike linear TV channels, Netflix do not always get the most recent tv series straight away or the most recent movies, which unfortunately is one down side to it. What Netflix does have though, is a lot of HD content at no extra cost and is great value for money.

That is the vibe i'm getting from the guys on here, Vince.
Rich is pretty much spot on and he thinks it will happen.

It's a shame because 2years ago, Sky thought 3D was booming

The part time service will continue to offer the limited 3D football coverage for the time being.

I too am surprised that no attempt to increase the viability of Sky 3D was made by putting it on VM too, especially as VM, to my knowledge, are the only company to have recently made any form of commitment to 3D (albeit via VOD).

I can only assume that it's sky being their usual spiteful selves ie it didn't work for us, so we won't help it work for you.

Full HD 3D Blu-ray is brilliant if the films have been made for 3D, unfortunately most people will never experience it because they buy cheaper passive 3D TVs which aren't capable of the higher resolution per eye.

The problem really is with the glasses. Holographic 3D I think would work, but we are some way off that yet.

The situation is dynamic, CJ. As Netflix and Amazon make more and more original series like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, things will start to look very different. We are mistaken to think that things will remain as they are. These are actually exciting times.

Here is some new from Netflix in regards to some up and coming content.

“In the coming weeks, we will premiere the all new 4th and final season of The Killing and a new adult animated comedy BoJack Horseman. Also in August, we will release Mission Blue from the Oscar winning director of The Cove, Fisher Stevens.
“Reflecting the increasingly global nature of the Netflix service, we now have original series in production around the world, involving some of the best storytellers working in television and film today. Marco Polo, a historical adventure from Executive Producer Harvey Weinstein, is shooting in Kazakhstan and Malaysia. In New York there is Marvel’s Daredevil, the first of our original series from Marvel Television, as well as the already eagerly anticipated third season of Orange is the New Black; while in Baltimore, production is underway on the third season of House of Cards. In the Florida Keys, the creators of Damages (Glenn Kessler, Daniel Zelman, and Todd Kessler) are shooting a dark family thriller with an ensemble cast led by Kyle Chandler, Sissy Spacek, Sam Shepard, Linda Cardellini, Ben Mendelsohn, and Norbert Leo Butz.
“Sense8, a mind-bending series from the Wachowskis (The Matrix trilogy, Cloud Atlas) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5), began production in San Francisco last month, is now in Chicago, and will shoot in many international locations this year. In August, production begins in Los Angeles on Grace and Frankie, a comedy led by Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston; and in Colombia, Brazilian director José Padilha (Elite Squad, Robocop) will begin filming Narcos with an all-star international cast led by Wagner Moura.
“During the quarter, we announced our first ever talk show, hosted by Chelsea Handler, the popular comedian and best-selling author.”

Netflix just keep on growing and branching out. 50 million subscribers world wide. I wonder if they will ever consider sport?

In a way mate they already show sport as Netflix USA shows UFC and WWE programming, i wouldn't be surprised to see other sporting programmes coming to them soon.

The lack of new movies or content is not a problem for me.

If I like a TV show, I just keep it on my TIVO for as long as I want. I don't think I have ever seen my TIVO over 40% full. I appreciate storing entire series may not be possible for those with families.

I have a lovefilm by post subscription and can have the latest movies popped in the post pretty much on the day it is released, and long before they are on Sky Premiere. For £5.99 a month it is fantastic value and is miles ahead of Sky Movies. The quality of the Blurays make the Sky movies HD offering look even more pathetic. They also have plenty of older Sky atlantic content too, if that appeals to anyone.

Even if VM do not add Netflix to XL (I think they will, following the e-mail questionnaire and theones post) I will still be paying less than £15 for access to pretty much any TV show and/or film I care to watch. I may have to wait (at most) a couple of days for dvds from lovefilm, but I think it is well worth it.

If an Amazon prime app comes to VM as well, the content available for at most £20 a month will be staggering.

They could be using a STB with an RF output (still plenty of those about), or going via an RF modulator.

You'll need a smart dns or vpn to get it so it looks like you're in the USA, it is a USA or RArabic sattelite sports provider but they also stream online too. You'll need paypal too. Unotelly is the best smart dns imo.

Thanks for the info,no idea what a dns or a ypn is mind! I guess you need to have a sky or freesat box to get them if you don`t want to stream them online?

Beinsports isn't available on any uk platforms, the smart dns makes it look like you're in their broadcast country say for instance you wanted to watch HULU you'd need to live in the USA to be able to view it, the smart dns would make it look like you was located in the USA.
They are very easy to set up i simply put my virgin media hub into modem mode connected my own router to it and changed the dns settings.
You can set it up via your laptop/pc too very easily by changing the dns in your adaptar, unotelly and unblockus both give full instructions on how to set your devices up.

I use my ROKU for 90% of my tv viewing the adverts on huluplus aren't too bad there are about 5 1 minute ad breaks per hour but it's American adverts which i don't mind.
If i wish to watch anything that's on lifetime for instance i connect my pc to my tv via hdmi and have a adblocker installed so i get no adverts at all however CBS have got wise to people using that method lol but the ads are quite short.
Iplayer etc i use my xbox360 or ps3 to watch them on.
I just cancelled my tv license too i explained i'm only watching on demand, someone popped around checked my story out and said i don't need a tv license so they'll see me in 2 years time-ish.
For videos i have on my pc i use plex to stream them to my ROKU box to watch on my tv.
For those who are interested in the smart dns services both unotelly and unblockus offer a free 8 day trial to see if it's for you, also Netflix offer a free 30 day trial too.
This site has loads of useful information and tutorials however do not use overplay as it is the worst smart dns http://www.eyeondemand.com/

I'm sure that this advert won't have gone out to Skys own customers :D

Sky provide different versions of some of their channels depending on their use. Eg pubs, the cable industry, direct to home use etc.

aye true but i feel we're in a love triangle with bt sports and sky. we're getting this love from sky sports now but you know bt is going to find out and we'll get slapped across the face and punished when the next bt sports renewal comes up in 2 years...

id agree with you mate its just a case of sky admitting their policy was wrong and they're losing money on advertisement and not gaining many more subscribers withholding it...but we know sky dont like admitting their mistakes ;)

wow you must have some services :D

Between your login here and your login on DS I've noticed you have access to Smart DNS , HBO Nordic , WWE Network , Hulu Plus , Netflix , Now TV and Wuaki.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to have a sub to VM or Sky :D less wires as well :D

HBO Nordics gone lol and wuaki has gone too, Nowtv will be gone after next month too, even when i had all of them it was still cheaper than Sky oddly enough.

You don't need a DNS , mlbtv is available in the UK and I'm pretty sure its not subject to any blackouts. Its available on many devices including the Now TV box.

They usually have a free game each day for you to try.

Not heard anything about MUTVhd coming to VM anytime soon, source thinks it'll be at least late 2015 before we even get a sniff of it coming.

borrissey 27-07-2014 11:54

That sucks, who's got it in HD then just the stream from mutv website?

Sky have it in HD and it doesn't cost any extra at all. (So long as you have a HD subscription)
