Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

The way I see it is this - whatever people think of TiVo, it has been good enough to reduce churn for Virgin Media to Sky, a company which owns loads of content and is the major sport broadcaster in the country. It really is THAT good. As long as it continues to be developed then I think it will probably be good enough to see off Horizon if put up against it in the same market. My hope is that Liberty Global will consider the success of TiVo and not automatically side with their own existing product. If, by virtue of the fact that Horizon has been developed by the company which effectively supplies Sky+, the products become virtually the same on cable and satellite, then Virgin's technological advantage will be lost and people will go to the company with the best content. And that is, whatever your bias, Sky. I can see cost advantages for Virgin Media to eventually migrate to Horizon - I'm not sure I can see many others.

I believe Horizon uses NDS MediaHighway middleware which Sky also use. Its worth mentioning that NDS is now owned by Cisco and the Horizon box has 5 or 6 tuners doesn't it and also uses the Snowflake EPG.

My thinking being that the NEXT version of Sky + hd and the continued development of Horizon will possibly result in similar products in the longer term.

TiVo looks ugly, it really has a look of an old games console, that horizon box looks modern and sleek, nearly as nice as the Samsung V+.

If we do get Atlantic, will people finally shut up about it please? Heard nothing but Atlantic for last couple of years and am sick of it. Hopefully if it comes people can move on. Although if it only comes in SD I suppose we will have another 2 years of moaning about it not being in HD.

Anyone else think the EPG needs a do-over? Every new channel just gets shoved in the high 100s. I blame all these HD and +1 variations! ;) I know all the SD channel numbers for the main channels, but not these HD ones that are on 17whatever.

I do, just gutted that I'm going to lose money today. Put a bet on Poulter to win the golf, and it is all going Pete Tong today. Not very amused. At least cricket is going good.

Not fussed what the look of a box is like, it can look like SuBo for all I care, as long as it has the same features as a TiVo box.

I have heard, from 2 separate sources, that BT Sports is going into the XL package. Both people claim they spoke to Virgin Media retentions advising they plan to leave sighting the loss of ESPN from XL and no news on BT Sports. Both claim they where told wait 2 weeks, you will not be disappointing! One asked if this means BT Sports in XL and where told you will not be disappointing.

Either I've been lied to, they've been lied too or BT Sports is going into XL. I promise I am not making this up. If Virgin get BT Sports in XL, and SKY Atlantic is coming soon, then it'll be coming back to Virgin Media in December!

Well when I joined SKY there was 5 main reasons:

1. Much more HD than Virgin
2. SKY Atlantic
3. SKY 3D
4. Access to Premier Sports
5. Oh and half price for 12 months!

However since joining SKY Virgin have:

1. Closed the HD gap (In terms of channels I would watch)
2. Appear to have done a deal for SKY Atlantic
3. Added plenty new 3D TV to their demand line-up
4. Premier Sports is dying on it's ass
5. Do half price deals for 9 and 12 months if you bide your time waiting for the offer!

If SKY Atlantic really is coming soon, and BT Sports does go into the XL package, Virgin Media becomes a very attractive proposition. As a Virgin mobile customers I'm getting offers for 1Tb TiVo, and a V+ box for free in a second room to come back. My wife will also be happy as Style has launched on Virgin too.

Don't get me wrong personally I'm finding SKY to be a great service overall, and they do keep on creating new products and services, however not necessarily ones that excite me.

Me neither however everything will become clear in about 10 days time.

SKY customers taking BT have to pay a £15.00 registration fee. There are roughly 1.8 million Virgin customers on the XL package. Maybe Virgin have agreed a deal for the channels to go into XL with a bumper initial payment of £27,000,000 to BT to cover 1.8 million customer worth of registration fees? I know it sounds very unlikely, but certainly not impossible.

They won't sell broadband if it becomes a stand alone subscription channel on Virgin, like Boxnation, either though.

Yes I accept that but BT have repeatedly said the point of the sport channels is to sell broadband. They were either talking rot or they have changed their minds if it comes on XL. In my view it is unlikely for nothing.

Actually, that's enough by itself, but it's so much more than that. For example, how it manages to find alternatives to your recording options when clashes occur. Sky plus is way behind the TIVO.

Sky Atlantic in XL I can defo see however all the rest included in XL I think is a distant dream.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Started a chat to a VM agent regarding BT sport this is what I got

Quote:

Jonathan: Hi, welcome to Virgin Media. How can I help?

Jonathan: Just type your question below…

You: Is BT Sport coming to virgin media?

Jonathan: I would be happy to assist you with the information about BT Sports with Virgin Media services.

Jonathan: May I ask if you're already a Virgin Media customer?

You: no

Jonathan: Thank you for considering Virgin Media.

Jonathan: We are currently in negotiations with BT Sports to carry there channel. We’re making every effort to ensure that our customers get a great service with the channels they want.

Jonathan: The website will be updated once we get this done.

Jonathan: May I please ask you few questions to suggest the best Broadband, TV and Phone package to you?

You: premier collection is the one I'm considering but I holding off for now to see if BT Sport went in it like ESPN is

Jonathan: Your selection is brilliant!

Jonathan: You can get ESPN America with Premiere Collection.

Jonathan: Once we will have BT Sports with us at that time you can take it as a add on with your Premiere Collection.

Jonathan: With our Premiere Collection you will get Broadband 60Mb, TV XL and Phone M along with TiVo 500GB Box, plus an extra V HD Box - HD activated and a Virgin phone line. You will get the Spotify Premium also free for first three months.

Jonathan: Premiere Collection costs £38.99 a month for the first 6 months and £62.99 a month thereafter. You will get free installation worth £49.95.

You: so it won't be free like ESPN is?

Jonathan: As per the current offer you are getting free installation along with first 6 month half pricing.

Jonathan: We cannot commit on the price of BT Sports whether it would be free or chargeable.

You: ok no problem
Make what you will of that

When I was a Virgin customer, there where times when they really pulled things out of the bag. Sometimes totally out of the blue and other times totally against the views and opinions of people here and other forums. Whilst I'm still to be fully convinced BT Sports will be in the XL package, here are some of the big surprises I remember that makes me think they might be able to pull it off.

1. Setanta Sports going into the XL package
2. ESPN going into the XL package
3. The return of the SKY basic channels
4. SKY HD channels being available on the Virgin platform
5. SKY Movies and SKY Sports available on demand
6. 24 HD and SD Olympic channels
7. Film 4HD as an exclusive
8. Jointly launching Setanta Sports News to compete with SKY Sports News

You clearly don't remember me posting on here as a VM subscriber , my parents take all VM services I have zero loyalty to Sky and will basically take a deal with any service provider if the services are right , that's the beauty of being on a rolling contract I can look at competitors like VM and BT. I'm currently placed in a perfect position to see what happens to the XL package don't forget we only have rumours as such yet , if BT Sport and Sky Atlantic HD is included in XL I can switch at the drop of a hat by handing in my 30 days notice.

we will welcome you back bud, everything as you say is rumours some have come true some haven't but to say this time there seems to be a lot more rumours about.Lets not forget we have new owners and they will want to show there plan of action if these rumours are true they certainly will have and even it's its only sky Atlantic included that is a major coup especially in hd we have been waiting two years and they haven't owned the company 5 min and strike a deal.
As for love film and Netflix from what I heard the new company wants them both on TiVo and regards to being included in xl that could be not possible but from what I was hearing they want to push xl and especially VIP package and pay one price for everything rather than Addon charges.
Things could certainly be looking up for vm customers, just need universal hd now(must remember to send my monthly email to universal owners:)) and what better stamp of approval than getting chad and the great muppetman11 back on side :D

Same here my 12 months fixed contract with sky is up on the Friday of the August BH weekend so I'm in a perfect position now just sitting here and awaiting the news if BT sport is added to the XL pack I'll be back in no time

Fair play to the posters that have continued to trumpet the merits of Virginmedia if the rumours are true. Been very close to moving to Sky in the last 6 months only the hassle of changing providers held me back. A few have continued to post that Virgin will pull through in the end, looks like they may well have been right :) Have been heavily critical of the tv service from Virgin in the past, seems may have been the best decision not to move.

I don't wish to spoil the party, but I'm shocked to see Sky Atlantic join Virgin soon. Sky signed an exclusive deal with HBO for Atlantic to be exclusively on Sky until 2016 (what I was told) and would not be distributed elsewhere until then. And the existing deal for Sky's basic channels does not expire until 2019. What is going on between Sky and Virgin!?

Sky signed a deal with HBO for their shows to be on Atlantic and no other channel (excluding existing deals), what platform Sky Atlantic is on is entirely upto Sky.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Personally I think it's pretty obvious that VM would want to get BT Sports into the XL pack to replace ESPN. I think if they had gone for the same deal as Sky things would have been done long ago. Whether or not they've been successful in their negotiations is another matter of course. I really hope so, as there's no way I'm going to pay an extra £15 a month on top of my VIP pricing. I'll go to the pub for the odd game I want to see if that turns out to be the case. This is eerily similar to the initial ESPN negotiations for those that remember it. Fingers crossed for a launch in XL, if that happens and Atlantic is confirmed I'll be extremely happy!

Tivo does a job, just not great at it.

Too slow and clunky compared to other boxes.

When I press a button I want instant response. Not let me think about it for a while.

Know it's not just my box, I've had 4 all the same, friends and family who have them or had them, all the same.

Hate the awful EPG too. Rarely updates on programme changes. Still get wrong EPG info on programmes, stats a programme is on, record it only to find it's something completely different.

Disappointment for the <0.1% of VM customers who actually read CableForum and the ~50% of those that actually believed the rumours anyway.

So about 4 people.

Yes, unless a deal is struck with BT in the next week or so, ESPN will leave Virgin and America/Classic will close regardless.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 3.

Delighted to see these rumours and hope they are true. I have my own Sky setup in my bedroom (long story) which is out of contract on the 26th Aug, so I am cancelling on the 26th Jul. I am upgrading our family virgin setup (tv, bb, phone) in order to get the sports and a box in my room etc. Makes it so much easier if they just bung it in the VIP pack, because then I can just ring up virgin and say "upgrade me to VIP please" and it'll take about 2 minutes. If BT Sport goes separate I will have to fanny around with the package options and lose out on loads of channels/bb/phone bonuses to get a manageable price and it'll take about half an hour on the phone and be really confusing.

me, my mum and brother split the bill so I can simply pay £75 a month and they pay £20 each, and have the whole VIP pack because what we've got now is totally inadequate for what we need and the router is rubbish so we could use the new one, and a TIVO box in the front room (i'll miss my Sky+ HD Box in my bedroom mind...). I would have had to get BT Sport through sky if worst came to worst but looks 99% like that won't be necessary.

also don't agree at all with people saying Sky Atlantic would be a fair substitute for BT Sport. I want those 38 premier league games I am football mad. I want all the sport and I want it in HD. A few cliched american dramas isn't the equivalent of 38 Live premier league games if you're a supporter. I have Atlantic now and never watch it. My team is first up on BT so hoping hey don't take ages to get the installer round.
