From Adrian on the VM forum regarding Animal Planet HD...

Hi all,
Due to technical difficulties, there has been a delay with the launch of Animal Planet HD but I can confirm that the launch will still be going ahead. Unfortunately, at this moment, I am unable to offer a time-frame.
As soon as the launch date arrives, we will make an announcement in this thread
Thanks
Adrian

No prob, it explains its non-appearence today and I wouldn't be surprised if a May 7th launch date is now on the cards from previous experences with ITV 2/3/4 HD

Good channel to get though. Pretty pleased with Virgin of late  Just wish Sports and Movies were available on the Anywhere App. Not that fussed about Atlantic tbh. Only really watch Movies, sports and horror, Atlantic doesn't really appeal, my wife would probably watch it though

Just from watching the trails, a show where the husband picks the clothes for the wife and she's suddenly happier than Jesus after his resurrection.

Surely they could have just done that in Debenhams themselves without the camera crew and sob stories?

Anyway, good stuff MB.

In these days of on demand, multiple repeats and Tivo, I'm not sure how much point there is in +1 at all. Saying that, it must be easy to carry. All you need is to cache it and run it on a 1 hour delay.

I guess that restricting it to the L and LX packages means they can boast about carrying even more channels on those packages, and people will be fooled by the marketing.

Lol. Do the project teams who integrate new channels onto their platform ever do any testing! Just fire the whole lot as obviously completely incompetent. 100% record on messing up major HD launches - look good in yearly appraisal!

Each of those shows has already been broadcast on one of the other Discovery channels, good start for a "new" channel

Time to stop worrying about MPEG2 just make all HD channels MPEG4 and ensure customers have MPEG4 capable boxes.

TiVo is MPEG4 as is the V HD and the Samsung V+ HD box. By making upgrading attractive, VM ensure that customers move to MPEG4 boxes pretty much as fast as is achieveable

What's that got to do with anything? I'm sure VM have plenty of spectrum to fit in more broadcast channels.

I'm pretty sure VM get their feeds and rebroadcast them, adding Nagra3 etc. I don't think any re-encoding currently occurs, so they'd then need a pretty big setup to re-encode all these MPEG2 feeds to MPEG4. It wouldn't improve the quality, because the original feeds would be the weak link.

It'd be costly in terms of encoding hardware and replacing MPEG2-only boxes. All it'd do was let them fit more channels in, and I doubt they're near capacity right now.

Yes, at least when recording in HD it would take up less space on the HDD if we moved all the HD channels to MPEG4.

Rumours reported in May 2011 at Zing was remove after SIX months on Telewest due to Zee who did not want Zing to be on the lower packages on Virgin Media.

And Zee signed an six month deal in November 2010 to given Zee and Virgin more time to work on the longer deal for Zing.

Zing launches tomorrow on the M+, L and XL Packages.

weegiegeek 30-04-2013 22:17

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 2.

True, that'd be the only real advantage. More recording capacity.

Saying that, it'd be an advantage to the customer, it'd cost VM a fair bit, and I doubt most customers build up such a recorded backlog that it'd make that much of a difference. We're talking about maybe halving the bitrate.

Perhaps, but how much of that is stuff you'll actually get round to watching? It'd make more sense for VM to offer 2TB, 3TB or 4TB Tivos for the people who want them, for a fee.

I watched the programme on the opening night of TLC about the woman who eats cat hair that her cat has left behind on the sofa etc.

Not only that, but she actually licks the cat itself! She says that it helps her to bond with her cat as she is doing what the cats mother would do to it as a kitten.

There were some scenes where the cat was clearly telling her to pack it in.

I don't wonder why they are reluctant at all, as I have said on many occasions. It annoys me that they drip feed information about launches but don't allow the details to be released until the channels are active. What's the point?

Also it's not a case of moaning about a few days delay. They had to delay the ITV HD due to technical issues, you'd have thought that with that experience they would have tested a little earlier for this launch. Oh, you know, sometime before releasing the channel details to the press.

This isn't a new channel and testing could have started sooner, TLC HD, however, is a new channel from the same broadcaster and launched on VM without any "technical problems".... kinda odd dontchya think?

If it was added on December 1st and removed on April 1st as your links suggest, it survived for only 4 months, not 6.

It does strike me as odd that Zee only wanted it in the higher packages when it was FTA on satellite. Although B4U Music is also FTA on satellite and restricted to the Asian package on VM, so who knows?

Virgin are blameless over this.

It's true! It was called my strange addiction or something similar. She said that she does have her bounderies though. She won't take any fur that has been near the cats anus or on it's two front paws (as they "use these to dig in the cat litter tray").

The other part of the programme covered a woman addicted to coffee enemas. Initially, her husband was disgusted, but now he is hooked too and his mother doesn't agree with it.

The EPG for TLC +1 is saying that Oprah is on right now. But that is not broadcasting until 5pm on TLC +1 (But is on TLC HD right now).

Aha! so the delay is because the "just in time" planning policy failed.

Quote:

Doing that would have delayed launch by weeks.
Not at all, it wouldn't have made any difference. Test first and release the details to the listings magazines when you have confirmed that everything is working. The only additional delay would be in the listings magazines printing details of the new channels, hardly the first time that has happened. It's probably no worse to delay the release of channel information to listings mags than to release it prematurely.

Quote:

Not really. Every channel has its own broadcast equipment, that can be faulty or not.
Indeed but shouldn't there be some redundancy built into the system to prevent such faults from being fatal?

I've never watched TCM2 and it's not showing anything ATM. What is the situation with the aspect ratio?

It's 4:3 stretched to widescreen as is Cartoonito. I find it hard to believe that Turner want it displayed this way when 4:3 aspect ratios are displayed correctly on TCM. It just looks as if the wrong aspect ratio flag / descriptor has been set on the stream.

It looks very odd when Cartoonito shows widescreen content in a 4:3 letterbox format which is then stretched to a 16:9 aspect ratio.

I can't say I watch either of the channels very often myself and the s-t-r-e-t-c-h vision format makes me less likely to watch.

Delays happen in real life situations. VM could make things easier by being a little more proactive and give a heads up on forums, such as this, if something is delayed.

They are usually fairly open about the reasons for a delay but it would be better if they provided the reasons more swiftly rather than reacting when the speculation starts.

Or why don't Virgin launch an 'Virgin Media Information Channel' on Channel 999 telling viewers what channel is set to launch.

I'd expect it is for targeted marketing to their customers who put details in, checks will be done to see if you have XL (for ESPN) and if you subscribe to Sky Sports.

Of course, there is no disclaimer at all on that page to say their intentions, but I suspect it is not just for letting you know BT Sports is 'Coming Soon' ;)

Or use the messaging system on TiVos, and they can also add pop up messages in MyVirginmedia if need be.

Both channels are native 4:3, why else would they show widescreen content in a letterbox? A descriptor/flag incorrectly describes the format as anamorphic widescreen, TVs act on the descriptor and stretch the picture across the width of the screen.

Pretty much because the official announcement is usually the channel arriving on the EPG.

They would still need to be more proactive about the reason for any known delays, it's so much easier than trying to firefight after any speculation has started.

Hi John

Many thanks for your email and apologies for the delay in coming back to you.

We do not have any current confirmed plans to launch these services on Virgin Media, but we continue to have discussions with all our platforms on ensuring we provide our viewers with the best possible service.

Best wishes

Hi

when will Universal Channel HD (and E! HD) launch on the VirginMedia platform?

regards John

IIRC, I am sure one poster contacted ITV about the previously missing HD channels (before they launched) and asked if we were getting them. The poster received a very similar e-mail reply saying there were no plans to launch the channels on VM. A few weeks later they arrived, so I am not gonna give up hope just yet:)

That's exactly the reply I would have expected to see from them, all it really says is that they can't confirm anything. They aren't going to confirm anything if they are still locked into and exclusive carriage deal with Sky. They can't really give any indication of existing contractual terms to the public.

The rumour on DS was that the channels would be added in the coming months, not really useful without an indication of the actual timeframe.

Virgin Media to move it Shed next door - soon.

I have discovered that Virgin Media is set to move Discovery Shed soon on Virgin Channel 274 to Virgin Channel 273.

I think it will move on May 7th when Home and Health moves to Channel 271.

Someone needs to talk to TCM Ben, as I've just recorded Gunsmoke as a test ----- a show that ran between the mid 50s to the mid 70s, and therefore in 4:3 aspect ratio. It is stretching the picture to fit the whole 16X9 screen. It is an unwatchable mess.

Indeed but shouldn't there be some redundancy built into the system to prevent such faults from being fatal?

Yes, but we wouldn't probably launch with a loss of redundancy.

Often!

It's been like that since launch in January, totally unwatchable.

Perhaps the severe compression is the cause of the problem. ;)

I can't imagine why Turner would want the content to be unwatchable. Or, more to the point, why VM started carrying it without the problem being fixed.

I can't say we never would. We'd assess the risks against the costs/benefits, and make a judgement.

I doubt they do, but sometimes these things aren't easy to fix.

Hard to believe, I know, but some people have to fill the whole screen with a picture and prefer distorted stretchivision to the correct aspect ratio

I'd have thought it would also depend on how long it was going to take to fix the problem.

It's a descriptor on the video stream, how hard can it be?

Haha, I know.. especially when wide screen TVs started to become popular and there was the mentality of having paid for a wide screen and wanting to fill it. There's a difference between choosing to stretch the picture and having it forced upon you.
